Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Dual-boot Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about Linux)
4) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

I have had Arch on my thinkpad for more than two years and have no beefs with it but since I'm on my new Skylake fast and snappy Desktop now I wanted something that looks nice out of the box and doesn't need too much work on it since I'll mainly be using Windows on this machine for games.

I used Debian for a couple of years before Arch but so I'd like to try something new, Mint felt a bit too laggy on the graphics side, tearing and vsync problems even after I updated the kernel to 4.4 and the open source ATI drivers to git version.

follow

apt update && apt upgrade
reboot

Literally every distro can look like any other distro if you install their DE.

Not sure if ask this here or in the stupid questions thread, but here it goes anyway: got and old computer (circa 2002 AMD K7, 640 MB of RAM) with windows XP and and an very outdated Mint version (Glorya, I guess). Downloaded newest Lubuntu Iso, "burned" image to USB stick with rufus under windows and tried to make comp boot from there, but to no avail.
Tried the very same stick on a friends comp (Some Athlon x2 build) and it boot Lubuntu as expected.
Tried again but with Puppy (Slacko) burned in the same stick, but still, won't boot.
Im mostly sure the old computer can boot from USB, as it shows the stick listed when I access the boot menu during post.
Question is: is this computer too old for current Linux distros, even those supposed to be lightweight?
>>

Honestly. Just looking ahead of all of the DEs and WMs. I don't feel like spending that much time on it, planning it from step one. I just want to orgasm all over a perfected distro while making very minute changes.

Well it isn't that hard, after installing a DE you usually just change a single line in a config file.

However if you want a distro that just werks and looks good, try mint.

A few questions:

1) What gtk and qt bloat do I need to make things look a little nicer on Debian with xfce?

2) Are we closing on the year of the Linux desktop? AMD going open source with their drivers, Valve pushing Vulkan, and NSA/Windows shifting their gears for advertisement and snooping are a few reasons. It still needs to somehow get on prebuilts if that market still exists with more and more people going for tablets and phones.

3) How's virtualization performance nowadays? This man on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37D2bRsthfI claims 99.6% on gaymes with a GPU passthrough and shows a 5% difference between native and VM, I don't see why I would ever need to dual boot now.

4) Is James F. Kurose, Keith W. Ross-Computer Networking_ A Top-Down Approach-Addison-Wesley decent for getting to know networking? I'm not from CS but have taken several courses and am interested in learning at least the basics.

5) Anything I should be wary of when installing Debian Jessie on the desktop?

>>
>>52555803
You change the xinitrc file to have the words
"exec awesome"
in it

There is most likely another exec command in that config file though, remove it.
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc is where my xinitrc is.
>>
>>52555803

edit your xinitrc, replace w/e WM manager you currently have to

exec awesome
>>
>>52555312
Calling BunsenLabs just Hydrogen is like calling Debian just Jessie. Could be confusing.
>>
>>52555852

You can have it in your home dir as well and it will exec that before your /etc/

>mv /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc /home/4chan/.xinitrc
>>
>>52555546
Not necessarily, you just need to install Chrome or Firecucks.

>>52555639
As far as I know, no. If you're going to start adding closed-source malware to Chromium you may as well install Chrome.

It's not necessarily Netflix being an ass here; it's the content """"""owners"""""" being fuck-asses about the idea of people watching their stuff without being fucked up the ass with the proprietary strap-on.
>>

It used to be because netflix used Silverlight instead of flash, which was a decent excuse... But now that it uses html5 like everything else, there's zero fucking excuse at all. Just amazes me that this is a thing desu.
>>
>>52555986
I don't understand why content owners insist on treating their customers like dirt. Wouldn't making your content more easily accessible and available to everyone in a convenient manner be a better deterrent to piracy?
>>
>>52556031
How long is Fedora going to keep up that release naming style?

Would Phillip J. Fry have woken up to use Fedora 1008?
>>
>>52556051
Yes, but they refuse to just accept that people are going to pirate shit and they will always lose a portion of profit to that; they want to make sure nobody has any option whatsoever but to buy from them. Look at what happened to games. Always-on consoles, the death of used games, needing to sign into an account to play fucking single player.

If they made their stuff easy to use and weren't fucksticks, people who would have bought from them would have. Hell, I'd probably have paid for a lot of the shit I've pirated if the companies weren't fucking evil.

Has anyone got the issue in ubuntu 15.10 where stuff like terminal hotkey will be mapped to the wrong layout? I use colemak which means my t is on the f on a regular keyboard, but some times I still need to do ctrl alt f (aka ctrl alt t on qwerty) to get a terminal up.

For some reason keyboard layouts have been really shitty on ubuntu

Linux n00b here.

So I was installing some packages and did apt-get upgrade and now it just stops at "Reading package lists.. 30%" then shows up this

test@test-pc ~ $ . 30%

So I can't upgrade nor install anything. Using Mint, btw. Wat do? (tried restarting, cleaning caches, but to no avail.)

In pretty much every case where sudo isn't automatically configured, you can't just add a user to sudo or wheel and expect it to work. Those lines are commented out in /etc/sudoers by default and have to be manually enabled.
Debian Minimal, which iirc doesn't even come with sudo at all, is one of those cases.

Everything I find consists of people saying it's theoretically possible but nobody actually saying that they've done it.
There's quite a jump between having a PS2 and a MIPS Linux kernel and actually having that PS2 be running Linux.
As far as I know the PS2 can't boot random DVDs so I imagine there'd have to be some level of modification to the PS2 before I can just pop in a Debian disc and run the installer.

Vi is deprecated shit, and the full vim package is quite large so debian only installs vim.tiny by default.
vim.tiny doesn't have ANY documentation with it, meaning a new user could open it up and have no fucking clue how to save or quit properly.

Nano is minimal yet easily usable by anyone fortunate enough to have eyes in their head and fingers on their hands, so it's usually the default editor now.

I haven't used Skype in years, but I'm pretty sure the Linux version is ancient. It might still be maintained, but I think it stopped getting major updates when MS took over, which was a long time ago. I could be wrong, but it always seemed to be pretty far behind the other versions.

Yo, beginner here.

I just ordered a ThinkPad T450. Does anyone have any experience using Linux (specifically Ubuntu) on this one?
I've googled around, but I can't seem to find a concluding answer.

Few specs:

Intel core i7-5600U
Intel HD Graphics 5500 (not for gaming, obviously)

Also, I've added an LTE Sierra EM7345 for being able to using the interwebz with my SIM-card when I'm out.

Would there be any problems with all these with the newest Ubuntu?
Is there another distro that would be better?

I'm studying computer science, so it's mainly for programming and watching random weaboo animes.
