Well, >>47348888 is right- lenovo don't really give any new drivers to legacy machines anymore. I'm pretty sure that there is a good chance that T/W/X *30 won't get drivers for Win10 when it officially comes out.

Hell i plan using Win7 on my dankpad until it's not longer usable and only then fully switch to loonix, instead of dual booting.

I can kinda recommend trying to get a Latitude E6330 as far as small laptops go, it's cheap and pretty darn good for the dollar.

You got me thinking about Windows 10. I didn't realise it was this close to release. Since htye want me to convert to .Net i think Windows 10 compatible notebook is a must. Glad to know that someone is into portable hardware on /g/. Most of anons here use monstrobooks, that ain't for me.

Eh microsoft, I wouldn't mind paying you a few thousands for a notebook that wouldn't fail me.

>>
hello, what is the /g/eneral consensus on the t440?
>>
>>47349145

>>
>>47349092
There is a fine line between a laptop that's portable and comfortable to use, and carrying around a W-series monsterpad with 2 HDD's+a kilo's worth of crust on the keyboard.

I personally use a W500 at home, but i wouldn't even think about trying to carry it around as a laptop (it has no battery either way).

>>47349102
It's time to upgrade, but you can always keep using your x201 at home. Again i'd strongly recommend the E6330 because the prices on them are starting to drop as well (they start at 300$ nowdays).

>>47349145
Well it's the latest Thinkpad a full voltage cpu. Although the trackpad is absolutely haram, good that now days you can put the T450's trackpad onto it.
>>
>>47349209
Eh. It just feels wrong to know that hardware itself doesn't fail me but its support does. But yeah, I understand that from the point of developing software that it is pointless to keep on working on legacy hardware.

My T420 will arrive tomorrow. I've never owned a Thinkpad before, so I'm pretty hype.

It's coming pre-installed with Win7, and I was wondering what you guys would recommend for someone that wants to try Linux for the first time. Was thinking maybe Mint or Lubuntu? Maybe on dual-boot?

And I don't know, just anything you want to tell me as advice, go ahead. I've already built my desktop for the heavy-lifting so I just need a nice study-work machine

>inb4 gentoo
>>
>>47352274
(and when I say "maybe dual boot?" obviously I mean Win7 + insert linux distro here)
>>
>>47352274
Well, Ubongo wasn't too bad on my dankpad. If you're new to loonix then try mint/elementary OS.

I still prefer to use wangblows because of muh legacy software.
>>
>>47352274
If it's your first Linux experience, I'd recommend Mint or Xubuntu/Lubuntu, as they come with some non-free software by default that you might have trouble to install if you're completely new to Linux.
I'd also recommend to install mpv for your videos and okular for pdfs.

Got a W500 which has been quite slow even when running loonix. What's the biggest problem with what I have, too little ram(currently have 2GB), slow as fuck HDD(about 50MB/s read) or just old hardware In general? Currently runing W7 on It.
>>
>>47354577
Yeah that kind sounds lacking, especially for Wangblows7. What CPU do you have on it?
>>
>>47354636

A penryn T9500 at 2.6GHz If I remember correctly.
>>
>>47354711

Not the other anon, but you should upgrade ram and get an SSD. No reason you should be running that slow with a t9500. The only problem with SSDs is that once you get one you'll never go back to HDD.
>>
>>47354711

Scratch that, It's a T9400 at 2.53GHz actually.
>>
>>47354743

I'm planning on doing both of those only problem Is I'm currently kinda broke so I really have to think out what should I get first. I've seen through task manager that I'm getting "dangerously" close to using up all my ram so I'm guessing that what's making everything so slow Is windows using the pagefile on that slow as fuck HDD.

In such a case would It be better to have more RAM or an SSD first?
>>
>>47354711
>>47354752

Go with what anon >>47354743 said.
Also the CPU is fine i guess, and the SSD will do wonders, might even want to just get another 2gb ram stick.

Mine personally has an X9100 in it, but it's a stationary computer anyways that's perma-connected to a dock&makeshit cooling pad hybrid.
>>
>>47354800

Also I'm not sure what SSD to get since It kinda seems like a waste to get modern SSDs since the W500 Is still a SATA2 system but older(used) SSDs all have quite small capacities.

If my incoming T420 has 4GB ram, upgradeable to 16GB (but I won't probably have the cash to do that in the near future), should I install a 32 bit or 64 bit OS?
>>
>>47354800

Ram. Do you have 2x1gb or 1x2gb setup? PC2-6300 is around 20 dollars for a 2gb stick. If you have one empty slot, it would help alot.

With the SSD, it depends on how much space you need. You might want to get a 128gb to boot from and then use the ultrabay for a hdd.
>>
>>47354847

64 bit.

>>47354847

I'm thinking of just going all the way and maxing out the RAM at 8GB, just to be safe.

>>47354852

Currently running with 1x2GB PC3-8500. W500's max RAM Is 2x4GB.

I guess It's better to have an extra HDD In the ultrabay. Didn't want to get rid of the optical drive but It's better than wasting money on a bigger SSD.

>not a real thinkpad
Yes it is and you know it.
>>
>>47354943

Pick up another 2gb stick and a 128gb SSD. That will give you the most bang for your buck.

What do you use your computer for mostly? I personally only need 4gb of ram and I hardly ever use that much, but I only browse and do light coding on my rig.
>>
>>47354943
Ehhh suit yourself, my W500 is doing good with a 2x2gb setup. plus i think a 4gb DDR2 stick might be a little expensive (not totally sure though).

>>47354911
It's just that if you already have a 64bit capable CPU, with ample ram, there is just no point in using a 32bit OS.

>>47354991
install gentoo

>>47355040

>>
>>47355048

It's my second computer for when I'm away from my main rig so nothing that demanding, just Internet browsing and reading pdfs. What made me think It's better to go all the way and get 8GB was how fast It used up the 2GB It currently has but that could just happen with the first two gigs and since both you and >>47355083 have no problems with 4GB I guess It's a more rational decision to get less RAM and save up for the SSD faster.

>>47355083

>Ehhh suit yourself, my W500 is doing good with a 2x2gb setup. plus i think a 4gb DDR2 stick might be a little expensive (not totally sure though).

I tend to take a longer time to save up and splurge on things but like I said to the other guy, maybe It's better to just get less RAM. And yeah, 2x4GB Is considerably more expensive than 2x2GB.

About 5 years ago, I picked up a L520 as my first Thinkpad.

Most of the case and hardware peripherals integrated into the laptop are shite and broken; clitmouse is fucked. No linux distro works for more than a week without hanging at boot. Thinkvantage button never worked.

As a result, I'm hesitant to pick up a Thinkpad again.

What can I expect from a Thinkpad T-series vs my L-series? What kind of Linux support does it offer? Without being hyperbolic, how rugged is a T-series?

Threw Windows 10 preview on my T530 last night. Runs flawlessly, didn't have to manually install any thinkpad vendor drivers, they all get pulled down in windows update.

That really is something Windows does well now, at least.

Win10 is bretty good too, or, it will be, compared to 7. Lots of legacy interface shit mixed in with the new.

One thing though, Win10 pulls down new Win10 synaptic touchpad drivers which allow for more functionality and actually improve the thinkpads trackpad responsiveness, especially when scrolling. That + Win10 gestures, it's gonna be Mac OS up in here, which I cant wait for.
