Which Router do you guys use? I need something new.
Picture related. It's what I use currently
>>47237041
what's wrong with it? I use the same at home, with DD-WRT firmware though
>>47237056
last few days I keep on losing wifi connection. most of the time I have to wait for 10 minutes until it works again.I already tried reseing it, flashing latest firmware.
>>47237041
I got an Asus AC66U router about 3 months ago and I like it.
Can't really compare it to much else that is currently out there.
All i know is that it kicks the shit out of the 7 year old Netgear router it replaced.
>>47237093
Thats ouside my budget. I was hoping not to spend more than 50 €. But Asus Router do look interesting.
6$ brand new...works like a charm
>>47237238
>supporting IS
Freebox 4, actually the last freebox that remains just a router and gets the job done.
also, not made in china.
I have the asus n56u. Kind of regret getting it. (Got it for 7x) the Wi-Fi signal is very weak when I'm using it in my room which has a bathroom in betweens. There are metal plates in the walls every six inches...
>>47237279
What do you mean "just" a router?
What does this do (or doesn't) compared to other routers?
>>47237041
http://routerboard.com/RB750GL
This Mikrotik beats any shit lined against it.
Runs RouterOS and with this you can set it as PPTP, L2TP, SSTP, or OVPN client. Also it can run as a server using all the protocols mentioned earlier. My favorite thing with this is the EthernetoverIP function inside PPTP VPN tunnel. Me and my friend all both on same LAN over internet. Also enabling proxy-arp function gives you the chance to discover all your firends devices.
>>47237041
I have been using the same model you have for 6 years now. Would buy again.
>>47237093
>tfw just got Asus AC68U in the mail
2 asus rt-ac66u
3 wireless ac routers (speeds 1200mbps, 1750mbps, 1900mbps) from a manufacturer, all free.
>hey can u beta test
>simple test plan - run some speedtests, test that printer sharing/file sharing works, play some gaymes, report any problems
>boom free router to keep
>have been given 3 free routers and a wireless AC PCIe card for my desktop within the last 8 months
feels good man
>>47237041
If you're not using Mikrotik or Ubiquiti, you're using cheap consumer garbage, diversify your components and everything will perform much better.
If you don't have access to gigabit Ethernet, this is an awesome setup. Will be beyond stable.

It's treating me good

Factory reset, and flash with DD-WRT, that's what I did when my DIR-825 became unresponsive and kept hanging from my torrent and server traffic, has been rock solid ever since.
How do I do Network Storage via USB external hard drive if I can't install DD-WRT Big firm ware?
>>47237879
How the heck did you manage to get a router that doesn't have enough rom space for DD-WRT?
Hell even the bottom of the barrel TL-74XNDs support the full thing.
>>47237925
>gets trolled by /g/ to buy $20 chinkshit router with ralink chipset
>wonders why there's not enough ROM or speed for custom firmware
>>47237986
TL-WR74 series chinkshit is in the $20 bux range and they use Atheros
>>47237925
I can install DD-WRT but there's no Big builds for it
Only Small and Mega
>>47238059
>Qualcomm Atheros chipset
>shitty hardware
You can put a BMW engine in a Geo, but it will still be a Geo
>>47238414
It'll be a fucking fast Geo
>>47237041
The older model of this router has a hardware bug that makes the WiFi die after a time, even with OpenWRT.
Get its replacement, the 4300ND, and flash OpenWRT.
>>47237041
Netgear R7000 running DD-WRT
I'm going to try installing OpenBSD one of these days
>>47237041
TL-WDR4300, works perfectly. It has a 2Tb drive plugged for ocassional movie watching and picture backup from phones.
Replaced an old 1043N pretty much like the pic you posted OP. Did the same job til one day crap itself. Both working with DD-WRT.
>>47237588
How nigga? Where can I sign up to this shit
why aren't any IPS installing 5ghz routers?
Just make one out of generic PC hardware. Even my ancient Pentium M based box gets aboug 500 mbit routing performance.
asus n66u - stock firmware
>>47240753
because they are too cheap to give out those items, and most customers are not getting a speed where dual band is useful
>>47240855
I wonder does it penetrate walls better than n56u
Asus RT-AC66U running Tomato, Shibby's build.
>>47240753
My ISP gave me a wireless modem that supports 5Ghz.
>>47240886
Probably not, 5GHz is shit for penetration and range.
If you run aftermarket firmware you could try changing the region to Singapore or something, they have higher legal power levels so that might help a bit but don't expect anything drastic.
>>47240886
can't say i tested that particular device. but, so far so good i can get signal across the street (30mts) fairly good, plus i deliver wi fi @2.4ghz access to my neighbour below.
>>47240753
VM in the UK does, at least with the services fast enough to require it for WiFi
>>47240957
I really hate that my room is after the bathroom and there are metal plates in the wall every 6inches.
>>47241228
i live in an old building, 85+ years. Brick's dust comes out almost black when you drill a hole on the wall, so im guessing each wall is 20-30cms thick.
>>47237041
I use a Netgear R7000 Nighthawk. Beast
why don't you people build 5ghz yagi antenas for your routers? lots of people are doing it on youtube.
>>47242734
Yagi antennae are directional. Omnidirectional antenna are preferred in most cases.
My own router is a pfsense one with an E8400. Quite happy to let that CPU to still live on.
I'm trying to build my own... but goddamn I can't find any old computers. People were tossing them out left and right 5-10 years ago and now nothing.
I got rid of all my old machines too years ago..
Also if I build my own what are some options for the os. Seems like pfsense is popular.
>using routers
cisco E900 running dd-wrt
>>47244362
See: http://www.bsdnow.tv/tutorials/openbsd-router
>>47240612
This
MikroTik RouterBoard RB951G-2HnD. Their routers run an open source firmware called RouterOS that has all of the options on the highest end Cisco routers but are based on Linux. I won't be upgrading to AC until they release a RouterBoard with it, I have full trust in them to make a stellar product at a ridiculous price.
>>47237041
>>47237056
My router too. I also use DD-WRT with it.
Which build do you use?
An old Cisco Linksys E3000 with Shibby Tomato on it.
>>47245485
That's exactly what I used before I got my RT-AC66U. My parents are now enjoying the E3000 with on it as an upgrade from whatever freebie router their ISP gave them.
Are those $300 tri-band routers that look like spaceships snake oil?
I'm currently using the built in router on my Comcast modem. It gives me advertised speeds on my desktop, which is wired, but shit download speeds over wireless. Like, half of that.
I'm definitely going to upgrade, I just don't know whether a $150 dual band would suffice.
is there such a thing as a reliable wireless router that doesn't have fucking blinking lights all over the god damned place
something a bit low profile since i keep it in my bed room? i tried tossing a thick cloth over it but then my signal dies due to overheating.
>>47245732
Honestly, your best bet is some electrical tape. Everyone seems to love bright blinking LEDs.
Im running pfsense on a socket 478 celeron and another one running a 478 Pentium 4 might change the pentium 4 for an i3 4150 build.
http://store.netgate.com/APUkit.aspx
>>47245401
I don't think RouterOS is open source. Am I wrong ?
>>47245780
It's not.
>>47245780
>>47245804
Hmm, I was under the influence that it was, my bad. I still like it a lot better than OpenWRT.
>>47246293
RouterOS is based on Linux. They just make all the goodie addons proprietary.
You might like pfSense. Most mature software firewall/router that is entirely open source and doesn't put features behind a paywall.
>>47246314
Yeah, I've used it and it's definitely solid, I just wanted to try something all in one and this turned out to be a success.
>>47244376
>using vaseline on camera
>>47246400
Fair enough. Different tools for different needs. I greatly enjoy having unique pieces.
Reboot the router without taking down the switch.
Reboot the WAP without taking down the router.
etc.
>>47245732
Open the device and cut out the LEDs.
>>47237359
he probably means not a modem/router combo
>>47240697
here ya go

picture related, I think my apartament is haunted, after spending $100+ on this router I still don't get wifi on the kitchen.
I even get signal on the street two floors below, but the kitchen? nope
Buffalo Extreme AC WZR-1750DHP
It even has a built in torrent client.
I picked up a mikrotik 2011u last week.
Shit really is tit.
>>47245732
My Asus AC-66s running asuswrt-merlin has no lights at all.
TP-LINK Archer C7, there's no beating it.
>>47245535
My ac66u was the most unreliable piece of shit.
The WORST part was that it is literally (dead serious) impossible to contact asus support for an rma on that router. Phone lines that never get picked up, redirects because the product isn't handled by one particular customer support team, and a chat room that was down (because of the "WEATHER" wtf) for months before I gave up.
>implying router is the correct terminology
>>47246810
unplug all your electronics (this includes lights) and appliances in the kitchen, if you get signal after doing so plug them back in one at a time until you lose it again replace item you just plugged back in.
>>47247326
it is a router, typically with a built in switch and access point but it is in fact still a router.
>>47247407
I think he means all it really does is NAT between devices and provide DHCP. He probably means "routers" is only correct for devices that run services like BGP
>>47245567
pls respond
>>47247487
But he's wrong then, because anything that routes between layer 3 networks is indeed a router.
>>47247554
I'm just saying it's the depths of autism I've seen here. I agree hes wrong.
>>47247487
And routeros does support bgp so he's just a retarded autist
>>47247580
Yep. You can even run BGP on most ShitWRT firmwares.
>>47247384
>>47246810
If still didnt solve the problem, try to see what material is in between the router and your kitchen. Might be metal wall or something that is very dense
>>47237093
since im doing everything wired i went with the 56, since it has the same tier ram and flash memory and the CPU is just below the max 1ghz speed of the top tier
was 99$ off amazon and a noticable leap ahead of the next teir for just 30$ and 2x better specs
the drag and drop QOS is awesome, along with the default DDWRT style firmware itself
>>47237332
buy those plug wiring adapters
>>47246810
get a good PLC just for kitchen
>>47245732
the Asus series only has blinking at the back which you can easily throw a sock over
the lights on the front and the ones that bleed thru the vends are all static
unlike my old DGL-4100 taht i upgraded too which had the blinking going thru the entire inside of the case so every hole showed it
now its just a constellation of steady dots which if i position could be blocked by near by furniture
>>47245732
rt-n56u+custom firmware
>>47245732
cover the leds with electrical tape
>>47248418
just turn them off in the router software
>>47237855
Same here. I have asus-wrt merlin on it. Used to have advanced tomato.
TP-Link TL-WDR3600
I bought it because I didn't want to replace a Belkin Play N600 the second time.
I'm happy with it
