Macbooks literally are Facebook machines. Utterly useless for any other tasks. Terrible with video production, awful for 3D modelling and rendering, okay ish for graphics (but can't do anything that other laptops can't), shit for gaming. All it does is look good and work quietly. But do any 'heavier' task and it will start overheating like a bitch.

What model do you have?

Also I'd like to know more about the performance when 3d modelling.
>>

2014, 13"
Overheats and renders slowly, similar to heavier video editing. I bought it like a year ago thinking that I'll finally be able to do all of these tasks on the go and I still have to do everything on my PC. All I ever do on this piece of shit is browse the internet. And use illustrator sometimes, Photoshop lags too lmao
>>
>>47148865
If that's the only tasks you can imagine doing with a notebook, then there's no hope for you.

Im looking to buy a macbook pro 15 inch for video production tomorrow. Should I?

Pic unrelated

Thank you anon. I was considering buying one.

Well then what's the purpose of Pros? Why pay more than for Air and still get shitty, disappointing performance?

mine is a dev machine!

I mainly work in C/C++ and node.js

I would rather buy a Razer Blade than a MBP

yeah dude, I can't possibly imagine what kind of compromise has to be made in order to achieve good thermals on a laptop
>>
>>47148865
I was considering getting one based on previous claims of it being great for editing photography/graphic design/web design and also for coding complex and simple programs.

What I don't understand is why Macbooks are so common among tech professionals. I get that it's a compromise between the power of *nix and the usability of Windows, but if you're able to code surely you know how to use Linux, so why shell out for an MBP?
>>
>>47149368
it is good for graphics, coding and web design, retina display only makes it better
battery life isn't anything special
nice trackpad, comfortable keyboard etc.
you just cant fucking expect to render 3d graphics on a laptop, whether its apple or not
>>
>>47149032
I use mine for the following things:

Photoshop
Illustrator
InDesign
Fontlab
Matlab
Mathematica
Office
LaTeX
XCode
Python
Web Dev
Emulating SNES/PSX/N64/PS2 games
Internet Browsing (includes mails, messaging stuff like that)
Music

That is like 99% of what I do with it and it's also everything I do for work.
>>
>>47149394
It's a luxury item. There is no other reason I can think of other than maybe battery life.

I'm guessing all it would take to dethrone it is a more expensive, glossier laptop with a web 3.0 looking UI.
>>
>>47149401
Would I get the same expected or similar results by running Linux on a Chromebook?

I'm a bit tight on cash being a college student and all and am taking programming classes so I'd want a machine to use during breaks to build up my coding knowledge.
>>
>>47149405
You're a cunt, get Libre Software instead of Adobe Jews and all other shit you '" need '" runs NATIVELY on *NIX

Anybody has experience with Apple Education store?

Also, what's your general opinion on rMBP 13 2015? Broadwell done right?
>>
>>47149441
But all my friends use the EM AYY SEE commputers. I don't want to look like a tool to them.
>>
>>47149441
Tried that, the free alternatives are all shit. If you disagree you never actually did anything with these programs and your opinion is meaningless.
>>
>>47149459
Yes, you buy your stuff from there and it is 100 bucks cheaper. Everything else is the same.
>>
I bought a macbook pro retina about 5 months ago, it runs great but looking at say a thinkpad x220/x240 I can't help thinking I paid way too much for something I don't need.

I'm tempted to sell the macbook and buy a thinkpad. Do I do it /g/? are thinkpads just a maymay?
>>
>>47149436
you won't run adobe cs on a linux or chromebook to begin with, and it's pretty crucial for the design/creative tasks you've mentioned
as for coding, a machine running on linux is perfectly fine, distro is just an os, the hardware is more important in this case
>>
>>47149483
Do we need to provide anything other than a school name in order to get that $100 discount?
>>
>>47149756
I bought a new rmbp off the education store a few weeks ago and I didn't have to provide any proof. I don't remember if I did this before though. Also I'm from Germany.
>>
>>47149394
Because no one wants time intensive shit like Linux in their home CPU but enthusiasts with no life
>>
>>47149808
So, how do you like your new rmbp? Do you think 2.7Ghz& 128GB is enough or should I go 2.9 Ghz & 256GB instead?
>>
>>47149869
Storage-wise you should know yourself. I bought the 2.8 GHz/512 GB variant (I bought it before the update, because they've risen the prices by 200 EUR here in the EU), but it was honestly a bad idea. 256 GB are more than enough for what I do. The difference between the CPUs is not that important, but if you have the money, buy the higher specced one.
>>
>>47149485
You'd be buying a fundamentally security compromised machine. I'm not sure why anyone would support Lenovo after this shit, just blindingly idiotic and anti-customer:

256GB is the minimum if you're intending to carry work, some large applications and music around with you, and still have some breathing room
