So I have been looking into getting a small beater laptop. I think the x201 is up my alley. Found a decent price on one too, but I wanted to check some online reviews first just to be sure...

Just pulled the trigger. Not too sure what to do with it, but I like the idea of mini durable laptop.
How did I do? I got it with free shipping basically.

Thoughts on the x230t? More specifically, how would it compare with a Surface Pro 2 for art work using the wacom stylus? I can't justify a cintiq yet

>bought x200s 2 years ago and hardly used it
>just looked back at receipt and it was £195

What the fuck, I thought I paid half that. And it has some kind of fucking irremovable mark on the screen that wasn't mentioned in the listing.

What a waste.
>>
>>47091287

What an idiot, I bought the more powerful x200 on scc-trade for £95, it's even less now and I use it all the time.
>>
>>47091181
Seems fine, obviously you could have gotten it cheaper but i think its a great buy.

But in all honesty that is pretty cheap for somebody from kikeclapistan like me, with all the shipping costs it will be pretty nice. That being said only if my T420 deal will screw up again.

>>47091257
It's definitely more powerful but also physically bigger then the SP2.
The keyboard isn't as good as the older gen but it's a few leagues above the crappy SP2 keyboard.
I'd recommend you try getting the X220t or even the X201t if you're low on money, X230t usually goes for quite a bit of money since a lot of them are still in warranty unlike the two mentioned earlier.

I'd like to buy a new laptop sometime this year. Should have
>SSD and HDD
>6GB or more RAM
>possible screen refresh rate >= 75hz
>reasonably good graphics card / prozessor

Is there something in the thinkpad series that fits my description and is not expensive as hell?
>>
>>47091410
Except for the 75hz refresh rate (which im just unsure of atm), what exactly do you mean by reasonably good graphics card/ processor?

It really depends what you're up to.

My current laptop (i5-2450M @ 3.1GHz, NvidiaGeForce 410M) can't even handle 720p with good debanding
>>
>>47091491
>with placebo settings

>>
>>47091491
ehh i'm a bit unsure by what you mean as to placebo settings.

Also my almost netbook old tier laptop with a first gen i3 could handle 720p.
>>
>>47091311
If I opted for a 201t, would I be left wanting for processing power? Also I'd be concerned about graphics - Ivy Bridge, which the 230 has, was the first time that integrated graphics became acceptable.
From what i see on ebay, the 230 is potentially slightly cheaper than a surface pro 2
>>
>>47091534
If it's within your budget, sure go for the x230t.
I recommended the latter two since most people here are poorfags like me, or like that dumbass who's trying to flip the w700ds he bought for 880$ to the poorfags here.

Any x220 owners here? Thinking about buying one and putting a 9cell in there. Maybe a cheap SSD as well.
>>
>>47092009
Meaningless post.

Do you have anything to ask or discuss?
>>
>>47092058
It isn't meaningless. I'm starting a discussion about x220s while including what I'd upgrade to. This is where someone else would reply saying that they have one and what they did to theirs, then give their opinion on whether or not upgrading to the 9cell battery or SSD is worth it.
>>
>>47091920
it 404'd
>>
>>47092118
Then ask that instead of rambling pointlessly.

SSD is always worth it, but the factory HDD is much better than most HDDs out there, and is very responsive considering it's free. Get an mSATA SSD.

I personally would buy the 9cell just because it looks sexier. A new 6cell will do most people fine, I'd imagine. It's probably worth changing a worn 6cell with at least a non-genuine 9cell tho.
>>
>>47092118
I really don't see the point in upgrading thinkpads, theyre cheap ass durable laptops. Theyre the mosin nagant of /g/
>>
>>47092170
so what?

>>47074986
>>
>>47092182
It's implied. Anyone without aspergers should be able to understand what i'm saying.
Also I didn't think about using an mSATA SSD. 128GB would be more than enough for me so around 60-80$ wouldn't be that bad.

>>47092186
This is kind of what i'm thinking as well. If i'm going to spend money on an SSD and 9 cell battery I'm wondering if it would be worth it to just buy the x230
>>
>>47092195
Cool. Wonder how long we have been able to do this.
>>
>>47092186
I like the /k/ tier thinking.

But honestly put simply getting a larger battery and or getting an SSD is a simple upgrade.

Big annoying upgrades include shit like installing an X1 carbon screen onto a T420/T430, but the result is spectacular.
>>
My current computer seems to have a fixation with BSODing, if I want to get something to replace it for about a year to mainly do some heavy typing and perhaps play a few older games in the meantime is a thinkpad the way to go? I'm in the UK so any model recommendations would be great thanks
>>
>>47092667
If you're on a budget X201/T410, if you're willing to spend a few extra shekels T510/T520/T420/W510/W520.

X201 are dirt cheap in the uk right now.

Does anyone have a Thinkpad with an Nvidia NVS 3100M GPU and is using it with GNU/Linux? How is the driver support, which one work better - proprietary or the free ones? Any issues?

So far I've only been using GNU/Linux with Intel GPUs and those "just work" (open source drivers).
>>
>>47092950
>which one work better
obviously the proprietary ones (assuming you use a desktop environment).
>>
so why does /g/ loves thinkpads so much?i never had a laptop and i want to buy one, mainly so i can code, use Solidworks and play some eu 4 or c&c.can the thinkspads do that?
>>
I have a Thinkpad R50, but it's slow because of the hdd bottlenecking. How can i upgrade it? I was thinking about using an IDE to sd card, but i don't know if it would work (well). Any help?
>>
>>47094861
I don't know about /g/, but I like them because they are built to last. Dropped it off my desk? Still works. Dropped my bag with thinkpad in it? Still works. Smashed someone's skull with thinkpad? Still works.
Also, the keyboard is great (well, the old keyboards are). They don't feel like "I'm on a laptop/toy" but "I'm on a portable desktop to get work done".

Here's a question, I just bought a new 33++ (9-cell) battery for the T400.
I've read about how to improve life and shit on that battery university site, and among other things it basically said to keep the battery on 85%-50% charge if I remember correctly.

But what's the first thing I should do, charge it fully? Calibrate with the Lenovo power manager? Or just use in normally from the get go.

>Just talk about the video and just ignore my voice but if you don't like it then don't watch it, no need to comment.
>>
>>47095106
Depends how much power do you need, the W series are much more powerful (thus also power hungry) while the T series has better portability and battery life.

IMO you can get a decent W510 for the price of a good T420.

well the w series is a bit pricy.i read a bit into it and its seems like solidworks is more cpu heavy.so many possibilities,so little funds.

Is there any risk or problem with using an off brand AC adapter like this one? If so, what kind of problems?
>>
The best ac adapter from ebay are the $6.89 ones... they work and last longer than the more expensive ones. I have 3 of them.
>>
>>47096094
.....

The entire point of this thread is used thinkpads, since the newer once are chink shit.

However the T440 is decent as far as laptops go, but still shit when compared to older thinkpads. Plus thats a ULV meaning it has generally crappy performance, get the i5-4200m if you want a decently powerful processor.

>>47096122
Well the entire issue with off-brand chargers that either they don't quite match the specs (usually they do), or the have a higher failure rate.
Either way they don't differ much from the original ones.
>>
So I have a W520 that I have issues installing linux on.

I'm doing a gentoo install, and the installation part goes smoothly until I tried to boot - nothing happened.

Didn't find it.

Is it the UEFI/BIOS?

Is installing linux with UEFI hard? BIOS just seems so much easier.

I'm gonna buy a lenovo g50-80 with a celeron cpu for about 200€ First hand with store warranty.
I have been considering buying it for a long time and upgrading it piece by piece would this be doable?
>i3 upgrade
>1080p screen
>maybe 16 gigs of ram
>>
>>47096195
>chink shit
aren't the ones of the buyers guide like the t400 and the x200 also made in china?

I thought the problem with the newer ones was that Lenovo forgot about the thinkpads demographic.
>>
>>47096265
That's kinda what i meant, they tried changing what was already pretty darn good if not perfect.

>>47096261
>Borderline bait

This isn't fucking laptop consumerism general. You can't upgrade a consumer shit tier laptop as you see fit. g50-80 is just another laptop that comes with a soldered cpu and ram(Meaning no upgrades), and i doubt you can change the screen on it even if you find something that fits.

If you want a suggestion for what to get for that price with these specs? a T520 is within that price range and can easily be upgraded to these specs (comes with an i5 at minimum).
>>
>>47096389
I'm pretty sure the g50-80 isn't soldered ram.
Also there is fhd screen option so yes it's replaceable.
Don't know about the cpu though, and i highly doubt the t520 will come with 8 gigs of ram at 200€
>>
>>47097170
That's the point, get a basic T520 for 200 euroshekels and upgrade it over time.

Hell you could even put a full fledged quadcore processor in it if you need the power.
>>
>>47095707
>try to get into the BIOS
>it asks for password

You can bypass the password by just hitting enter and you can still get into the BIOS, but you can not change any of the options.
