If you want to go somewhere with it, just put it in your backpack. You can fit in it a big laptop it's powercord, a mouse, a powerbank for your phone, an external drive, a hand-held, large headphones and some food/WaterTM. Why would you use anything other than a backpack?

i really dont need to carry my 600GB of courseware/ coursework/ old projects on a daily basis.
i dont need to carry around iso's and vm backups and an array of software for windows and mac.
i dont need to carry around every song ive downloaded in the past decade as my music tastes change
i dont need to carry around backups of my harddrive
i like using SSD'd bc they are much faster. Unfortunately less space.
these are just a few reasons for an external drive.

Fuck backpacks. The way you wear them makes whatever's inside take a lot more of a beating. It's hard to be aware of what you're hitting your backpack on. You swing it around to take it on or off, and you have to do thing anytime you want something that's inside it.
Leave backpacks for heavy textbooks that don't mind getting bonked around a bit. Use a shoulderbag for something relatively delicate like a laptop. It doesn't even need to be one that's specially designed for a laptop for it to protect it way better than a backpack.
I use a giveaway shoulder bag from a conference. It fits the laptop well enough and holds all the accessories and other crap I need to travel with.

A second slimline drive takes up less space than an external drive plus the cable(s) needed to hook it up. And if you don't need a CD drive soon, you can just carry the hard disk in the laptop.
My Chinkpad isn't designed to have an UltraBay, but Windows thought the hard disk I put in it was removable and offered to eject it. This gave me an idea. I took the screw brackets off the backs of the HDD caddy and CD drive and put a small tab of tape on the bottom to yank them out by.
A messenger bag, you bunch of plebs. Have to keep my ThinkPad in prime condition.
