I heard on Friday that the company I work for will standardize on them as the laptop for almost everyone. You will still have an option of getting rMBP, however, if you need it. But most will go with this new MBA.

Do you mean the new macbook air or this new 12" macbook?
The one in OP is not the air. Apple is just calling it the "Macbook." 12 inch, retina displace, M, USB-C, etc
It is a different series from the updated Air.
>>

Have you used an all aluminum laptop before?
I am never going back to plastic. The fullmetal cases feel phenomenal and they don't heat up like you're implying.

I've never used a Mac, but I honestly think getting rid of the ports and consolidating all of them into one multi-use port was a solid design decision. I know I'll catch shit for it though, and I know people like to take any opportunity to shit on Apple.

When you're at home or work, you should be doing your work on your desktop while your laptop is plugged in and charging. When you're out, you've got 10 hours of battery life or so and can use the port to plug in your USB drives or phone. Your laptop shouldn't attempt to replace your desktop at home, it should be something you use while you're out, and focused on portability and battery life.
>>
>>47033843
How does the Core M it compare to the i5-2500k?
I don't know enough about the class Core M is in to understand that benchmark. But my desktop uses the i5.
>>
>>47033978
Core M gets a PassMark score of ~3000, i5-2500k gets a score of ~6500.

Both are more than enough for programming.
>>
>>47034085
Passmark is utterly meaningless across generations and desktop/mobile. My 3900 passmark Gen 2 i3-2100 dual core shits all over my laptop 8000 passmark i7-4700MQ quad core while plugged in and on performance mode.
>>

>>47034163

That aside, it does have them:
fn+up arrow=PgUp
fn+down arrow=PgDn
fn+left arrow=Home
fn+right arrow=End
>>
>>47033257
It'll be fine, nobody said it can't be used.

It's just it's even more overpriced than how overpriced Apple shit usually is.

So, this is a new level of overpricing and marketing stunts.
>>
>>47033257
I'm actually pretty curious how the keyboard feels.

>>47034326
>It's just it's even more overpriced than how overpriced Apple shit usually is.
It's always like that with the new form factors. They get the people who need the newest thing no matter what and pay off the production lines, then things become cheaper.

The macbook is going to replace the air in a a couple years, mark my words.
>>
>>47034163

>>
>>47033978

Difference really is that the UX305 has a sub 1GHz Core M, and we don't know the rest of the specs yet - but at $899 it's equally as worthless as the new macbooks.

well, it probably need to feel good and be easy on the eyes.
Handle tons of tabs in your favorite ide (I love IntelliJ.)
Compile quickly.
Play the music/ebooks/radio you listen to while coding
handle IMers while you code and not suffer from toasts popping up over your ide.
Handle tons of tabs for stackexchanges plus youtube for whatever you're researching.
all simultaneously while feeling smooth and fantastic.
Maybe enough room to neflix on half the screen when you're cranking through boilerplate code and need a distraction.

so yeah, a tiny text-editor-only laptop isn't going to do it.

>tons of tabs
Not a tough requirement at all
>>
If you need a programming machine and not a compiling machine, you could probably get away with a Chromebook. ChromeOS has online IDE options on top of a terminal for SSH and maybe X11 forwarding for graphical IDEs, or you could just install Linux on it.

Here's the deal with school and computers:
Whatever you're thinking of buying, it's more than enough.

Let's not kid ourselves here. You fuckers are wanting to buy >$1000 machines because you:
A) Want something cool
B) Want to look cool
C) Want to game
You can whine and complain about <insert bullshit here> that takes 23509283525 GHz at minimum to run that is soooo absolutely required for you to merely pass the class. As stated, it's bullshit.

Especially coding. You can code on a netbook. Shit, I've SSH'd my desktop from my phone and done some coding work at school, and this was during the Galaxy S1/iPhone 4 days, when screens were tiny.

Your $1300 toy isn't going to make you a better programmer than an Indian H1B with a $200 netbook.

Even if you're an engineer running SolidWorks or Pro/Engineer Wildfire or Matlab or MultiSim and you're on campus, the campus workstations are going to be faster, and if you're not on campus, you're not getting any work done unless you're at home with your desktop anyway. I know, I'm an engineer, I was an undergrad once too.

Buy it because you want it. It's okay to want nice things. Don't ask retards on /g/ to justify it for you.
>>
>>47037527
>implying people don't do more than draw and code in school

>>
>>47037589
If you need a workstation, buy a workstation. For most programming the new MacBook is more than enough.
>>
>>47033257
I honest to god think apple was testing the waters or trolling the market. what was the lowest performance wise we could get away with the highest price we could get away with?

There's no way to say this with out stereotyping, but this was for daddy's girl whose going to college. She will be blown away by the crisp high resolution screen and upgraded track pad, nothing else will be of concern to her, she never used USB ports on laptops any ways, because you can't download a thumbed up comment to a flash drive.

If you plan on using this for some basic programming, ATLEAST get the macbook air 13 inch that thing comes with an i5 and a much higher thermal threshold.

Personally, the lenovo y50 with an non gimped i7, blows all these away for a cheaper price (except for the screen and hard drive which both are extremely easy to upgrade which actually took less then 30 minutes for both upgrades.),

There's a point where form is emphasized over function.

Apple is notorious for doing this shit: See the iPhone 6.

Making things so incredibly thin for aesthetic value is stupid when increasing thickness to the point of acceptable portability would give you MORE BATTERY LIFE on top of extra functionality.

Take a look at the thinkpad X series (specifically 210, 220, and 230) they are very small laptops, one would have to be pretty dense to say that they aren't portable. Yet they still manage to have functionality up the ass due to ports and great battery life because they can accommodate large batteries.
>>
>>47040359
Thinkpads are made of plastic and feel like bricks though...
>>
>>47040359
x250 still has a vga port and is sub 3lbs.
I don't see any point in going thinner.
