So my college hired me as a media consultant to photograph events at the school, make and assist with videos, and record events. $15/h ain't too shabby.

Oh, and they just got me this thing. It's really fucking fast.

I bet it'll go to great use, OP.

Drop out of the cult you call a "college." They are a chapter of the iCult and should be boycotted.

Thanks, needed a new entry in my list of "Stupid shit /g/ says to sound cool".

Currently it's churning through 1.8tb worth of footage and transcoding it all. Tuesday I'll be editing it all down to make the collage for the graduating class, and then working on 4 other video projects.

I somehow came out ahead and this thing is awesome. It blows through things like Warp Stabilizer like nothing.

I'm having them wipe it on Tuesday and installing Windows 8.1 with a dual boot to Windows 10 so I can use the new Spartan browser.
>>
>>47003644
It's Firefox... Gtfo.
>>
>>47003644
Why not? It works great. It's easily the fastest browser on OS X that has features worth using (not counting Safari's amazing battery conservation).

>>47003652
It's owned by the school, bro - not the OP personally. The school gets to "keep" it, not the OP.

>>47003669
why

How fast can you install Gentoo on it?
>>
>>47003652
Nope.

It was faster to just snap away with the iPhone than to screenshot, move to a thumb drive, move again to another computer... I just took them with the phone, Airdrop'd it to my BMA

WTF are you talking about. You must be new to the ways of the Internet...
>>
>>47003685
OSX is for kids. The only reason it's considered the OS of choice for an "artist" is because back in the WinXP days, MSFT was sucking majorly at low-latency ASIO sound drivers, whereas Mac's had zero problems. So naturally at that time, every recording studio went Mac. Then it just snowballed from there.

I own a MacBook Air so I use OSX on a daily basis, and almost all of my mobile editing is now done on it. File management on OSX is fucking laughable, things like Storage Spaces and ReFS working hand in hand for a super fast but stable RAID setup is tits, being able to full screen a window without having to constantly flip between different virtual screens... I can go on and on but this computer won't be shit until it's got 8.1 or 10 on it.
>>
>>47003605
I'm not saying that to sound cool.
>>
>>47003705
The Pro and Thunderbolt display together came out to over $10k.

Oh, and the monitor and/or Mac is defective; the monitor keeps going to black but that's a Thunderbolt issue, but the USB's all stopped working when I plugged in my external SSD and I had to hard reset.
>>
>>47003721
I'm not posting this from the Mac. They are blocking 4chan on the school internet and I don't have time to setup a VPN there since I had some photos to take today.

I knew I'd post this from home so this was by far faster.
>>
>>47003740
yeah

because raid is apple only

the expense isnt justifiable

youre fucking stupid for not getting a workstation anyways

you only have 12 cores that motherboard is shit

Fact is, there's a better access to creative apps on OS X.
You can't deny that.
Things like Pixelmator, the allmighty Sketch, and so on.
>>
>>47003791
>MFW Windows makes RAID easy and painless and you can even mix and match drives (not recommended)

Who said I'm justifying the expense? I literally wrote
>>47003634
and said that I sent a parts list. I wanted dual Xeon's with two R9 290x's since that would be faster.

They chose the Mac since artists buy them.

Either way I got more than I originally wanted since FirePro's are fucking amazing at render jobs.

The thing is, when you finally come down to professional tools, creative apps and all types of things considered, Windows always has like two alternatives for every program on Mac, and they're often better.

Who needs Pixelmator when you have the Adobe suite? Sketch is bretty good, but I know there are quite a few good sketching programs on Windows too.

They have a really nice Sony videocamera; it's one of the midtier models that isn't up with the F55 but way more prosumer than the normal "high end" camera you'd find at Best Buy.

>>47004019
Thanks mate, I'm actually working on fashion this summer. I use the Sony A99, a Tamron 24-75 f/2.8, a Zeiss 70-200G f/2.8 and some various Minolta primes.

Are you trying to say that Mac users are still too stupid to screenshot? If you are, you're not exactly setting any standard for others to be proud of.

I have a form of autism, sometimes I miss words when I type, it's annoying.
>>
>>47004079
What I don't get is the fucking "Cinema" display.

What fucktard decided to not offer a matte option? I kinda wish they went with an HP Dreamcolor or a nice NEC.

>>47004092
In that case, sorry dude.

I didn't screenshot since I'm home now and instead of having to screenshot and find a drive that I formatted as FAT (all my drives are ReFS) to move the screenshots on to, etc...

Just easier to take pics and post from home.

It's one of those models that the lens is integrated. Has a stupid nice zoom and a very fast lens (f/2.8) and some triple CCD sensor tech in it.
>>
>>47004076
It's funny because you think you have an "edge" over us when really, you're just as stupid as the next person that owns a mac
>>
>>47004135
Please point to where I think I have an "edge" over anyone else. Especially since almost all of my personal computers are all either custom built or Asus ROG laptops, and my MBA is only there because of the battery life and I needed one Mac for clients who insist on using Aperture or FCP

Having rented the A7r and A7S for a day, I can safely say that this is bad advice.

I need a camera that is weathersealed (already striking out the A7R and A7S) but also gives me fast access to many of it's features like AF tracking and shot previews with the f/stop applied.

I also need a load of battery life, durability, HDMI out for livestreaming and A-mount for some of the more artsy shots.

The a7r is the only one I'm itching to buy since in a studio setting, it'd be fantastic, but it just can't keep up with the A99's speed.
