I switched from Windows to Linux recently and it's a whole fuckton easier to program with, it was amazing.
Other than that I just do basic stuff like internet, music, and videos. I do play games on it, but it's really just limited to a few small titles, so the fact that a lot of games aren't available doesn't bother me.
>>
Programming, surfing the net, reading, drawing, listening to music, chatting with friends, to name some things.
>>
>>46972442
If you really want a graphical interface then synaptic is a good frontend.
But ignoring a majority of applications just because you fear text is stupid. People don't use linux in spite of the terminal. The terminal is what is keeping them. If you look down under your greasy fingers you should see a large keyboard which let's you type stuff and if you know what you are doing it is a lot easier as you can automate the simple things so life can get easier for you.

In my opinion, the most practically. I use Windows for pretty much everything besides programming (and the occasional desktop ricing), which I do in an Arch VM with LXDE. It's extremely fast, you really can't tell you're in a VM, and it's just a really nice environment to program in. I'm not a Linux expert either (but the Arch install was easy, so I'm probably more familiar with Linux than the average "tech-savvy" person) but it's a nice way to learn more about it without just diving into it as a primary OS.

I am very supportive of the "year of the Linux desktop" and will happily switch over once it's objectively better than Windows across the majority of my use cases, especially games. And to anyone who wants to say "muh gaymes" to be insulting, I play games very rarely but I do enjoy games casually, and refuse to dual-boot just to fill the gaps that Linux fails to.

i actually just waste my time playing games. linux is a perfect emulation machine, and has ports for many good games like Quake III Arena, and open source remakes like OpenRA.

also real interesting to try new distros every now and then. for example, i just gave both gentoo a try, and also freebsd a try though that isnt linux. freebsd is easy as piss to install by the way, has its own installer. if you are interested in getting into a *BSD distro, you should give it a try some day.

Installing through the command line is easy as shit, but honestly, there's a few things Linux needs:
>Standard GUI-based installers (like Windows Installer but for Linux) that works and fits in regardless of your preferred widget toolkit (qt, gtk, wx, command-line gui).
>Make every standalone program that shouldn't be "installed" (including gui-based installers), an easily recognizable .elf (since that's the *nix equivalent of .exe)
>>>This also needs to check your distro's repos for the package you're trying to install from it's own source(s), and ask you which version you want.
>>>I may actually make that one a project at some point because this really shouldn't be too hard to do, it just seems no one's done it yet.
>A single unified package manager that all Linux distros use (so distro and software maintainers don't have to spend as many man hours packaging software for different distros).
>A standard graphical package/software manager (like Window's Programs and Features menu, but it could be integrated)
>>>Gnome Software has this covered for the most part, but we still need the distros to agree on a package manager standard.
If these things could be done and well integrated, Linux would be much better for average users.

Good GOD no! file extensions are the stupidest fucking thing ever. Determining file type doesn't require an extension and linux file explorers can easily tell you whats executable and whats not.

Adding extensions to Linux would just make "porn.jpg.elf" or "software.deb.elf" viable attack vectors for stupid people.

Okay, scratch that, Steam isn't in the standard repos. I would have to update to testing anyway to run it because it uses a libc newer than what comes with Wheezy. If i were looking for the download of it online I would see that Wheezy isn't supported and update to Testing or Jessie. Then its a simple dpkg -i command followed by apt-get -f install. Or if you have Gnome then there is a GUI application that does all that for you.

See, if I want Steam on Windows, I go to my preferred search engine and type in 'Steam', without the quotes. Then, I click the top link that takes me to store.steampowered.com/. From there, I click 'Install Steam' in the top right. Once that's finished download, I click 'Next' or 'Agree' on the EULA and work my way through the installer, keeping an eye out for any 'nasties' or 'viruses'. Keep in mind this 'installation' process takes about ten seconds, maybe less if you're a fast reader of if you've done it before. The entire process from start to finish, on a good internet connection, would take perhaps 30 seconds to a minute.

If you REALLY can't spare one minute of your life to install a program, I think you need to reevaluate your time management abilities.
>>
>>46974744
3 seconds really is shorter than one minute

There are many things a user can do with his or her operating system. Most Linux distributions are highly flexible and very versatile. You can browse the Internet, download and run software, and so on.

>If you REALLY can't spare one minute of your life to install a program, I think you need to reevaluate your time management abilities.
That's just as much an argument for using Linux. I compile a lot of my programs anyway. Just a couple commands and I let it run in the background for however long (lua interpretter takes 10 seconds, go compiler takes 10 minutes, beanstalkd with the modifications I make for my company takes 4 seconds, kernel takes an hour or so, etc.)

It's like you believe the only way to do something on Windows is the incompetent way.

Also obscurely named packages are fun to find on Google. It's even better when you have to compile it or when it changes your dependencies/flat out doesn't work.
Maybe it's because I use mainly use red hat 6.6 and mint. Then again, why do I have so many options for distros? And why does every other user -even outside of /g/- tell me to use something else entirely to get something to work?
