I realize you probably didn't go to a top-tier business school, but Apple is likely trying to segregate its internal market into 3 niches (macbook/air/pro). The 3 will cater to 3 different types of users with little overlap.

Well, the thing is that if you seriously never do anything taxing with your computer, then a light machine with a high resolution and good battery life really is better for you.
And we know that that's what the plebs are doing. The average computer user doesn't need to compile huge C++ projects where just the linking takes 2 minutes; The average user does so little with a computer that smartphones can, and basically have replaced PCs for them. Regular people don't give a shit about functionality if it doesn't have aesthetics. Macbook has a 16:10 screen and the width of the black border around the screen is equal on all sides. Zenbook has a 16:9 screen and the width of the border around the screen isn't equal on all sides. The surface pro 3 has a black border where the width is equal on all sides and it makes it look better, but it still doesn't have a 16:10 screen. The ratio of the screen and the border around it will determine the shape of the bottom part and if the laptop looks to wide or too square it will look like shit.

Sure, the Macbook is thinner and lighter than the Air, but not enough for /g/ or even normal consumers to care. Out of those 4 pieces of criteria, the Macbook ties for two and wins NONE. That's not even considering value.
That's why I'm really hoping for a souped up ARM SoC in next year's Macbook with similar performance to the Core M (hell, the Air 2's SoC is basically already there) and a much lower price tag.
Let's say Apple adopts a new Soc naming scheme. A9 for iPhone, A9X for iPad, A9 Pro for Macbook.

I had the first gen one. It was fucking shit. Terrible keyboard, ssd failed after 6 months, crap battery life, 1600x900 TN. The lid was not sturdy at all. It would flex if I was just holding it in one hand.
