Since it's doing routing it has to be a x250 rather than an x150. I had an x450 before and it couldn't do routing either. Why the x250 can and the ones two steps up from it can't is beyond me.

No, you dumb nigger. You buy domains at the registrar like anyone else, but then set the nameserver records to point at your DNS server instead of using the registrar's DNS services. Then you use BIND or similar to manage your own zone files.

Yeah, server hardware is generally limited in scope in regards to what is really feasible to use. In my case, the controller is embedded with the option to add on a better card. I'm just thankful the write cache is serviceable. Even the battery can just be swapped out (which seems to be a frequent thing with this server...I almost considered rigging a bigger battery to the write cache in hopes it lasts longer).

I'm in a University halls of residence, with their wifi being the only way for internet access.
Unfortunately, the subnet computers get put on seem completely unrelated to the wireless access point used to connect, so I cannot have my laptop and desktop talk to each other, as well as the computers of the people near me. Dealing with USB drives to transfer files around is a fucking pain in the ass, so I want to transfer it over wifi.
So my question is, can I set up a routerless subnet between all of the computers over wifi so they can all talk to each other, and still have the connection with the university router up?

your university probably has a class B block so if you are lucky everyone has an actual public IP and not just a private one. in which case, yes it is possible to do what you want but i sure as shit am not going to tell you how. use google kid, even then if the firewall knows what its doing you will still get issues

16GB DDR2 memory
I plan on upgrading the processor and putting a second proc in there. The hard drives I might upgrade to two 300GB SAS drives, and I need to get a remote management card for it.
