Just got the rails for the hp server

specs:
big ass rack I got for $50, stupidly spend $80 on casters
48 port patch panel that came with 1/2 the ports pre-wired with some cable that says cat6+
24 port negear smart switch that I got for $25, only complaint is loud fans
shelf for things, planning on getting/making another to screw non-rackmount things like the router and modem to
motorolla docsis modem
netgear router with dd-wrt
hp dl380 g5 acting as a whatever until I can fill it up with 1tb reds and 32gb ram
>>
Motorolla modem
Dell PowerEdge 1950 16 GB 2 CPUs running VMware ESXi
One NIC on the PowerEdge connects to my modem and is bound to a m0n0wall VM
The other NIC is connected to an uplink port on my Extreme Networks Summit x250 48t switch
My switch is doing all layer 3 routing between my servers, permanent machines, client machines, and a few other VLANs, everything tagged on the port going to the ESXi server
Some shitty NetGear AP

Forgot picture. Kind of outdated, I don't use the Juniper firewall because it was a huge piece of shit. And I don't use the 24 port switch because it can't do ipfowarding (I was unaware of that when I purchased it)

Servers.
>>
>>46955029
I completely agree, I have to get around to getting a 24 port switch. I think Extreme has 8 port switches as well, but I would feel more comfortable with a 24 port one.

Since it's doing routing it has to be a x250 rather than an x150. I had an x450 before and it couldn't do routing either. Why the x250 can and the ones two steps up from it can't is beyond me.

>>46955029
48 port patch panel I got because I could, I got it along with the switch and a bunch of ethernet cables for $35 at a enterprise recycling place
I wanted to have future proofing with the switch, and since I had a rack I wanted to have a rackmountable switch instead of those consumer switches
>>
>>46955228
Well I guess a free 48 port is better than an 8 port for $20. I'm not being crass, just curious.
I picked up a shitload of server equipment on Craigslist for free once, got a lot of learning experience with it. Not only did I see a tape drive for the first time in the flesh, but got to fuck around with it too.

These things are impossible to get rid of by the way.

No, you dumb nigger. You buy domains at the registrar like anyone else, but then set the nameserver records to point at your DNS server instead of using the registrar's DNS services. Then you use BIND or similar to manage your own zone files.

Shitty e200i smart array controller has never been reliable. I even wonder if the drives I pulled were really bad but I don't have anything else to test them with. I might buy up an IBM tower and work with that instead.
>>
>>46957685
this is why I don't trust my hp's p800 or whatever it has
iLO has been bugging me about one of the battery's being low on charge, and I'm not sure if the notice won't go away or it is still happening
>>
>>46957685
Hardware RAID sucks, especially with cheap cards. It's almost always worth the CPU load penalty to go software RAID, at least with Linux or anything that uses ZFS.
>>
>>46957715

Yeah that would be the write cache battery. Its probably still an issue, but the controller will just not use the cache for risk of data loss.

>>46957720

That's part of why I don't think I want to keep the server around. It has no JBOD mode so even if I did use, say, ZFS it wouldn't have direct access to any of the drives.
>>
>>46957768
>Yeah that would be the write cache battery. Its probably still an issue, but the controller will just not use the cache for risk of data loss.
I'm going to try and crack one open and see if I can replace the cells
what sucks with some servers is they're meant to have a raid card and there's no on board sata/sas
>>
>>46957793

Yeah, server hardware is generally limited in scope in regards to what is really feasible to use. In my case, the controller is embedded with the option to add on a better card. I'm just thankful the write cache is serviceable. Even the battery can just be swapped out (which seems to be a frequent thing with this server...I almost considered rigging a bigger battery to the write cache in hopes it lasts longer).

do any of you guys know if these should have bulges on them?
they also appear to not be openable by normal plebs

I'm also drawing a blank as to what version of sas connector goes out the back
>>
>>46958009

The batteries themselves are non-serviceable. But they are parts you can purchase and replace with other ones.

The bulging doesn't seem anything unusual, but the batteries are always on charge during their life cycle and so if they no longer hold adequate charge its probably at least partially related to wear.
>>
>>46958093

/diy/ here, that's what HP wants you to think
>>
>>46958268

Well of course you can try it. But when in the realm of IT it would be wholly impractical to try. Most often you'd have a warranty or service contract to fall back on, and that's why they're non-serviceable because it wouldn't make sense normally.

But I'd imagine most of /g/ with servers have them from second-hand sources or if they did buy new with limited or expired warranties, so all bets are off.

No, they're all SAS hard drives and there is a single SATA port on the motherboard. So it doesn't really work like that in this case.

Oh, I guess you could get a non-RAID SAS HBA or a better card that does JBOD. The Adaptec 5405 is good, powerful, and can be had cheaply on eBay.

Find it at your local dump and reclaim it, or at the dumpster after it's thrown out, etc.

Server: HP ML350 Gen8 V2 - 16GB RAM, 4TB SATA + 500GB SATA.

Switch: Cisco SG 200 18 Port Managed Gigabit (non-PoE)

Phone: Cisco 7961

Server OS: VMWare ESXI 5.5

Primary uses:
Seedbox (160 current active seeding torrents), rate limited to 200KB/sec.
Various pfSense OpenVPN firewalls connected to Access mode VLAN ports on the switch, so I can just plug my pc into a different port to mask what country I am coming from.

So /g/, say I want to have my own server.

I will use it for file storage (music, movies, photos) so I'll lots of easy extendable space. Something that can be shared and stored in the house. Several people including friends and family will be using this.

I will also want to use it for a web server to host a site for myself, plus git repos and everything else I might fancy.

Do I build something with PC parts, or can I purchase a used server? (rackmountable preferably)
I'd really love to have something professional, professional as in a prebuilt business server.

What models to look for?

Best pic of the thread!
Does the server just run FreeNAS?
And why the Reds? Do they have better write speeds, or read?

Get a rack mount case and build in it. I have 11 disks in mine not counting USB. Probably have $1200 in the system.

Thanks. Unfortunately in my (tiny) country there's a nearly nonexisting market for this kind of stuff.
But recently I found something.

What about a x3650 IBM with 2x Xeon E5420 and 50GB ram for 350 USD?

(somewhat non-adjusted value: 426 USD)

is that a single drive?

The pc in my pic was 15 bucks, and don't get me wrong I had a former rpi server, but that is going back as onion pi router in a little bit.

That a TS140? How are they?
Been hearing stories about them being the new G7 Microserver in terms of a cheap tower server.

Currently only have a single G7 Microserver running ESXi with 16GB RAM, does the job but need more.
Got a TS140 and another N40L on order, thinking of switching to Hyper-V and try clustering.

Networking-wise aside from the usual ISP combo-router I have an old Cisco Aironet 1100 AP and a SOHO 97 Router and have no idea if there's anything useful to do with either

Newfag here and a little lost, how i can rent a connection only? For example: home connection running at 1 mb/s
Servers running at 100 mb/s basically for host websites and gameservers and more w/ a dedicated ip i mean

yes its a single drive

>>46974311
i like it so far, very quiet. its the xeon one so quad core but no hyperthreading, but meh i dont really use much of the cpu anyways. only one ethernet port so do your research if you want to add another one since esxi doesnt like anything. esxi also doesnt recognize the usb 3.0 controller so all of the ports are 2.0 only which sucks.

im thinking of going to hyper-v just to try it out, but i just dont want to have to set up all my shit again

Sorry for the shitty cellphone pic.

Up here is a thinkcentre that runs pfsense. On the pfsense box I run snort, squid, unbound, ntopng.

The other box is a FreeBSD 10.1-p6 server.

the FreeBSD box is my main network fileserver, stores all my media, runs OwnCloud, is responsible for motion detection on 3 security cameras, and probably some other shit that I can't think of right now. It also pulls backups via rsync from all my other boxes and does nightly backups of my website.

This question isn't directly related to home servers, but more so tangentially related.

I'm in a University halls of residence, with their wifi being the only way for internet access.
Unfortunately, the subnet computers get put on seem completely unrelated to the wireless access point used to connect, so I cannot have my laptop and desktop talk to each other, as well as the computers of the people near me. Dealing with USB drives to transfer files around is a fucking pain in the ass, so I want to transfer it over wifi.

So my question is, can I set up a routerless subnet between all of the computers over wifi so they can all talk to each other, and still have the connection with the university router up?
>>
>>46974521
no
>>
>>46974521
buy a cheap used router or hub and setup your own network between your comps ya dumb dumb
>>
>>46974521
So your computer and laptop are sitting on different networks determined by the Access Point.

Are you able to ping or otherwise communicate with the gateway used by your laptop while on your computer?
If so you could set a route so any traffic from one network gets pushed to the gateway of the other
>>
>>46974621
>Are you able to ping or otherwise communicate with the gateway used by your laptop while on your computer?
No. I can't even ping the desktop's gateway from it. They probably don't respond to ICMP, or don't respond to packets on that address.
$ ip route show
default via X.Y.183.1 dev wlp2s0 metric 303
X.Y.183.0/24 dev wlp2s0 proto kernel scope link src X.Y.183.231 metric 303
$ ping -c 3 X.Y.183.1
PING X.Y.183.1 (X.Y.183.1) 56(84) bytes of data.

--- X.Y.183.1 ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 2008ms

>>46974598
But will I be able to be a part of that network and the universities network at the same time?
>>
>>46974521
get a patch cable
>>
>>46974846
Yeah, that works for my computer and laptop, but running an Ethernet cable between my computer and other people's computers isn't really viable.
>>
>>46974799
It's on purpose you dingus, it is for security.

And no, you yourself are not going to be able to get around it
>>
>>46974880
Yes I know.
That's why I'm trying to create my own private network, separate from theirs.
>>
>>46974903
good luck with that, you don't seem to understand the concept of subnetting.

your university probably has a class B block so if you are lucky everyone has an actual public IP and not just a private one. in which case, yes it is possible to do what you want but i sure as shit am not going to tell you how. use google kid, even then if the firewall knows what its doing you will still get issues

Here's my server. An IBM x3550. Current specs:

2x 146GB SAS Drives
1x Xeon 1.86 dual core
16GB DDR2 memory

I plan on upgrading the processor and putting a second proc in there. The hard drives I might upgrade to two 300GB SAS drives, and I need to get a remote management card for it.
