AFAIK at first the AI will become good enough until the robots can do all of the daily things you might need it for, then the focus will switch to hardware for the better part of ~40 years(until a near-human bot can be constructed), then the AI will most likely get a huge boost.

What do we need for a good humanoid robot:
Some kind of artificial muscle.
Servos and hydraulics/pneumatics all make noise or pose major reliability concerns. No one would want a robot to get a leaky seal and spray fluid all over, or lose control of a limb mid stride.
Tons of sensors for face and object detection, proximity, range, just general spatial awareness.
Can't have a robot walk through an environment without knowing what things are, or who people are. Similarly it can't successfully navigate if it happens across a staircase with stairs that are of a dimension its not programmed to walk up and down. It'll have to be able to gather that data and adjust its steps accordingly. Things like that are crucial.
An immense level of compute power.
All of that data has to be taken in, processed, and sense has to be made out of it. It needs to handle natural language processes, and be able to understand context in language from the spoken word like IBM's Watson system.
Sentience isn't required for a believable humanoid robot, it just has to behave like its sentient. If you can interact with it in a way no different from how you'd interact with a living person then its good enough.
Almost most important of all is aesthetics.
The machine needs to look convincingly human, no uncanny valley, or it needs to look like something else. No one wants a semi human blank expression staring at them from the corner. If it had a distinctly robotic face it would be more friendly and tolerable in appearance than something which was a poor reproduction of a human face.
