Why GIMP? GIMP is by far one of the least stable raster graphics editors out there. Most any (open-source) alternative would be a better choice.
Not that I would encourage anyone to use Photoshop for that matter.

Tried GIMP, the UI is fucking horrible and the tools don't work properly.
Even shit like text is a chore as you have to enter it in a dialog box, without being able to see the style and can't edit it afterwards - if you want to change it, delete the layer and start over.
The sooner someone starts working on a real FOSS graphics program the better, I'd love to ditch expenseshop, but GIMP it never going to it's replacement.
