Thinking about getting an X40/1. Can someone give me a run down on the different options available?
Since someone got anal in the last thread about my question, I'm asking things like:
What the physical differences are, if there are any common faults or quirks associated with each model, if it can support WWAN, etc.
I bought an i5-560m x201 with an SSD for $160AU last week as I needed something to take notes on. It is lightweight and powerful, and for the price I am very satisfied with my purchase. I was surprised to find that people are interested enough in it to ask about it and most of them comment that it's a cute little laptop. The auction was awesome fun too.
Just got an X220 (ebay, used) in the mail and I'm really liking it so far, however it has one pixel stuck on red
I've tried a bit of flashing lights to unstick it as well as some pressure, but it still persists.
So far the pressure has had the best success, temporarily unsticking it, but sooner or later it flickers red and then reverts
Any ideas?
Should I just give up and contact the seller for a refund/return/replacement?
Don't buy a used ThinkPad unless its refurbished with a warranty.

If it was really refurbished and recertified it would be covered under the Warranty Act and you would have a 1 year warranty on defects.
Assuming that you live in the US.
What you probably have is a limited warranty on a resold used product which is not the same thing.

I got a X201 refurbished with a warranty and it has one dead pixel. It doesn't bother me, though.
I imagine W series are heavy as fuck. I want one for a bigger screen and familiar keyboard(otherwise, I would buy an X1) I like my X220, but I never adjusted to the smaller screen as well as I thought I would.

T420 is Sandy Bridge and it kicks ass. It can do EFI and legacy BIOS, running everything from Windows to Linux to OS X to BSD.

I think he's kidding. It would be unusual for a CCFL light *inside* the screen to get dusty. More than likely if it's got a tint to it, the CCFL is just showing its age.
There's no easy fix for it. You can try adjusting with color correction in your OS, or replace the entire screen with a new model. If you're feeling really adventurous, you can replace the CCFL bulb itself or even go with an aftermarket LED bulb. Personally I wouldn't do this unless the CCFL was dead and you wouldn't lose much by borking the swap.
I've replaced the CCFL before. It's not as hard as everybody makes it out to be, but it is harder to get perfect. Mine is slightly misaligned so it's a little bit brighter at the bottom of the screen.

X40 was criticized harshly due to having a ULV PentiumM, so when the X41 came out, the older X31 was sold along side with the standard voltage Pentium M instead of a P4-M. What 'killed' the X41 for long term is the 1.8" pata HDDs, so CF Card converters are more convenient...

I do love my W700ds, but the keyboard flex is a bit disheartening.
Although the W701ds is rare, the rival HP 8740w is sold for a higher price despite it being more common.
I've had my T420 for about a week. I purchased it refurbished. It arrived in impeccable cosmetic condition with a minor volume button issue, that seems to have resolved itself somehow.
The specs are pretty terrible, though. I'm going to swap the 5400RPM HDD with a SSD in the next month and upgrade the RAM from 4GB to 8GB.
That I have a perfect screen and keyboard is amazing to me, the hinges are still good, no scratches on the exterior, etc. Best $245 I've ever spent on technology.
Is there a guaranteed way to tell whether or not the 15.6" 1680x1050 display in this generic business laptop branded for use at a dentist's office will be able to be fitted into my Thinkpad T500, preferably without destroying either machine?
