So /g/ if you had ~$2000 to spend on a laptop what would you buy? Im looking mainly for quality and perfomance, price isnt a real issue

the 15" rMBP is more than 2,000 burgerdollars though

A laptop for ~$300-600 and something else.

I'd get a refurb.

duh fuck me, just looked on the US store, I didn't know Apple transfers prices 1:1 from $ to €.

So it's only more expensive where I live. Well sometimes it sucks to be a yuropoor.

Reminder that the Dell XPS13 has superseded MacBooks as the high bar for laptops.

Uh, well check out an Elitebook or something. I don't know.

Depending on the situation, get the most expensive laptop ever and sell it.

If it's like your grandma offering this, just get a normal laptop.
>>
>>46780111
MBA, xps, but for 2k I'd like something with a boss gpu.
>>
>>46780217

If it's not an MBP, you get something better in every single way. A workstation laptop with a i7 extreme, high-end quadro, 99% color gamut matte screen, carbon fiber or magnesium alloy build, keyboard spill protection, fingerprint scanner, more ports and expandable storage, expandable battery + extra battery slots, the list goes on.

Any specific models?

i was looking at the think pad y50 thats on special for $900 right now, i know its marketed as a gaming laptop, but that isnt my reason to buy it. I like the look of the toshiba kira but it has no dedicated gpu so its a no go

nice website, are there any workstation like laptops with a slimer form factor by removing optical drive, vga port etc?
>>
Get an HP Omen, showman.
>>
>>46780494
ive tended to steer clear from hp based on my experience with two of there laptops both having similar problems
>>
The new Xps 13 looks pretty darn good. Use the rest of the money to buy a phone or something
>>
>>46780459
HP ZBook, which pretty much is a business class Ultrabook with a workstation GPU.

Workstations are all about performance and versatility. By using a slimmer form factor you have less thermal capacity for high-power components and no room for an optical drive, which can be replaced by a secondary battery or storage drive in many workstations.

MSI

I'd get a used thinkpad for $200 and invest the rest in penny stocks.

I'd elaborate, but that's pretty much what ULV is. Low power consumption, low performance.
>>
>>46781605
I thought the voltage and clockspeed changes depending on load though
>>
>>46782003
It does, but ULV CPUs are very low TDP to begin with.

For something to play games on I choose a HP Omen.

If games weren't and issue I'd get a Dell XPS13
>>
>laptop
I already have a Surface Pro 3 and see no reason why I would go back to using that dinosaur form factor.
>>
>>46784432
It's the opposite for me. I wouldn't trade higher TDP capacity, expandability, repairability, more ports, better keyboard/screen/touchpad/speakers and not having to use a kickstand for muh thin & light.

Though I have to admit, the active digitizer is pretty nice.

I'd buy a shit used one for 200 and pocket the remaining $1800.
>>
>>46784516
Those are all reasons to get a desktop, not a portable device.
>>
>>46784597
So a portable device must be as thin & light as possible?
By that logic, your only portable device ought to be a smartphone since it's even lighter and thinner than a tablet or Ultrabook.
>>
>>46784675
No. It has to be at least usable. 5 inch phones aren't a replacement for doing work. But needing an i7 and gtx 890m on a portable device is retarded.
>>
>>46780111
Thinkpad X220
spend the rest and alcohol and cigarettes
>>
>>46784723
Form factors are a spectrum, though. Something with an i7-XM and 890M would be much thicker and heavier and less portable due to TDP than something with an i7-QM and 860M and both would be more repairable and versatile than say an Ultrabook, which in turn would be thinner and lighter than both. And of course, there are form factors in between and around the three. Dismissing a particular form factor because it doesn't meet your personal preferences or needs doesn't make it "retarded".
>>
>>46784885
>890

lel, I meant 880M. Such a thing doesn't exist.

Has anyone ever used a Zenbook before? If you use a student discount + some sort of texted code promotion it's like $850+$70 tax for me. Is it worth it or are there problems with the Zenbook line?

>>46785033
Yeah that's the main thing that makes me fairly hesitant. I don't mind taking the AC adapter around but I don't want to. The rest of the specs seem fantastic though and for the $920 it seems like a good price.

Not even Apple does this

>>
>>46785359
OS X is a collection of closed source APIs and programs on an open source operating system.
>>
>>46785345
I'm not defending lelnovo, but Superfish was only on their new consumer line (anything NOT a ThinkPad) like Y, Z, G, U series, etc.

Doesn't change the fact that what they did was retarded, of course.
>>
>>46780111
MSI GS70 or GT72, otherwise go for a desktop. I have a 755M SLI laptop and a 980 GTX pc which are still under 2000 €. You can still upgrade the PC if you need more performance.

You can try a 980M, but it will be outperformed by a 970, if you really want to play games choose the desktop.

Forget Apple if you need performance, if you just want to waste money Apple will do.

You should tell us what you need it for. Mobility, gaming, converting, whatever...
>>
>>46784930
Bump on this, anyone have any thoughts?

Hi guys I'm a Paid Apple Shill. I regularly suck Apple's Thick Black Cock and take it up my bum for pay. I highly suggest you get sodomized in the wallet by their rMBP. It is worth every penny.
>>
>>46785618
$920 for ULV shit better have amazing battery life. And that's far from amazing. I'd personally look elsewhere. I'm not a fan of Ultrabooks, though.
>>
>>46785754
What would you recommend? I'd like to look at a variety of things, maybe I'm getting too blindsided by the raw specs of the laptop so feel free to show me whatever else so I can make comparisons
