>>46769951
Why are you running so many things at once?

You aren't possibly using these tasks. Your use of your ram isn't legitimate, it's just a substitute for your laziness or lack of any ability to intelligently perform and coordinate tasks.

>Hey guys, I'm doing all this stupid shit at once for some reason. Pretty cool I got all that memory, huh? 8gb BTFO.

Just fuck off. If you were doing actually DOING SOMETHING, like complex fluid dynamics simulations, rendering, encoding 4K video in HEVC, 3d modeling, or whatever, then yes, your ram would be worth it..

Right now you're just a child that can't understand how to close applications you aren't using and actually focus.

Same. I got my laptop ram used for a steal and the machine only had 4 before so I grabbed it. But my desktop rarely uses over 4Gb so I haven't wanted to blow the cash on it. I just spent a few hundred on a new amp and headphones so I'm not exactly looking for problems to fix when everything is running fine at the moment.

And that's the retired shit...

As for the desktops, I'm considering picking up 96GB for my HP Z800, but thinking it might be time to upgrade to the Z820.

The amount of ram you have actually reflects what's required for the task you perform and can forsee performing in the future. It's not about consistency of usage so much as ever being in a situation where you ever absolutely need all of it, and are either very inconvenienced by not having that extra headroom, or would be outright crippled by it.

OP's ram usage hardly reflects usage patterns where any of their tasks are actually tied together or independent. It doesn't reflect a workflow where all the open applications are actually needed, and I highly doubt he/she will ever hit a scenario where their 16 gigs is at all justified. It just exists to fuel a lack of consciousness about their actions and the device they're using. Hence the

>lol 10 games open guise haha

And that's the real problem with people buying high amounts of ram and acting like they've ever needed it.

If I need more temporarily then I add swap.

Bought 2x4GB years ago, had a two slot board at the time so bought 2x8GB before the prices got jacked up. Different sizes and speeds should be fine, it'll just run at the lowest frequency. Also if you don't have the correct slots filled you could lose dual channel if the capacities are different. Of course for the best reliability and simplicity you should try and have all stick be identical.

>>46770819
Perfectly fine. With a 4 slot board that runs in dual channel each channel has 2 slots, as long as those match it's good. With a 2 slot board (i.e. most MITX) each channel only has one slot and so you have no option but to use identical capacities.
