since new bread, new question...
has anyone successfully transplanted the guts from a x220t to the non tablet x220 chasis. i have an x220 that i love dearly that is being a pain and am in the mood to fix it using such a method...
>>
want to get my first think pad, it's gonna be used mostly for coding and a bit of pen testing.

cant decide between the t420/t430 and X220
im a bit hesitant about the low res screen on the X220, seems like it would be horrible for multitasking. also opinions on getting a refurbished tp on newegg?
>>
>>46740995
There's a T430 going for like $330 via the eBays.
Get the IPS outdoor screen for the X220 if dim screen is an issue.
>>
>>46740416
what would be a good thinkpad for minor gaming like hotline miami / minecraft / league of legends?
>>
Stuck between the X61 Tablet, the X230 Tablet, and the T430s for Comp Sci classes. I feel like the ability take notes with a pen and OneNote would be nice. If I got the X61 it'd be the 1400x1050 model so the higher resolution over the X230 would be nice but then I'd have to deal with difficulties in upgrading the HDD to an SDD.
>>
>>46741737
Given such choices, I'd toss up the X230t and T430s. Touchscreen, IPS panel, fun and a bit more battery life, or higher resolution panel and more working room.
The X61t's battery life doesn't really cut it any more
And there aren't really any difficulties in upgrading, regular 9.5mm (as opposed to the also regular 7mm in the T430s and X230t). It's just that unless you flash Middleton's on, the SSD will run at SATA I

At the end of the day though, I always found a real pen and paper to be a lot better taking notes, especially since you can have all of them set out in front of you

x200, just got one for $60 bid on ebay

supports libreboot as well
>>
>>46742506
Why can't my X300 support libreboot
The BIOS takes longer than the bootloader+OS+login. I would literally have about an 8 second off-to-usable-desktop time if not for the shitcan BIOS.

I'd go with a T60 if you just want to buy it outright. Got mine for $70 just because it had no operating system.

You need a system board to match your target case. Ebay the tablet system board and buy a non-tablet board, probably for less money.

Lenovo hardware manuals are excellent so download one.

All X200s'es have this.

>led backlit screen
Absolutely meaningless.

>intel 5300 wifi
If this is the only spec they're giving you, then it's also meaningless.
>>
>>46743528
There's models with 1280x800 screen (CCFL and LED backlit) and shitty intel 5100 wifi. I only mentioned those stats because they were relevant when discussing different x200s variants. Well, I forgot to mention CPU, it's SL9400
>>
I've seen people mention that (on the X2xx series at least) the 9 cell battery extends a good deal and is very sturdy. So much so that the manufacturer wanted it to be capable of being a handle

I don't have a thinkpad yet but that seems very risky to me
>>
>>46743969
That's how its meant to be used. My battery doesn't move around at all or feel loose when I'm carrying it around like that.

Just flash the BIOS and replace the wifi with something halfway decent like the Intel 7260 AC or something powerful like the QCA9880.

I am a masochist, thats why.

ThinkPads are just not for you.
Like how some people can pay up the ass for gourmet/cuisine food while others would be happy with animal style fries, I will not try to persuade you that ThinkPads are good, nor will I try to justify my 'hobby/interest'.

I like to go running/jogging and enter a few events, but do I go out and be the greatest? Nah, I just do it for fun, I collect ThinkPads for fun, I also like to get ridiculed for fun as well. I am totally okay with taking criticism (sizm?)

Slow down there a bit, there was an optional SXGA+ screen for the X61T but it is plagued by getting bubbles in the screen due to the glue slowly leaking away, it affects some buttons and could potentially get into contact with the inverter too.
I have one, it hasn't gotten bad but I've had it about a year and it looked near new but its leaking somewhat and getting kinda gunky. yucky indeed! :3 *chomp <3*

But the benefit of the base XGA Tablet X61 is that you get an IPS display, but again, most of the units were equipped with digitizer screens, only a few are 'multitouch' which means they accept digizier and finger input.

The tablet and X61s use the same motherboard, the non slim X61 has a slightly beefier fan to accept a T7300 to T9100 (I think)

Its old as shit, got 4 of em for like $30 and mett a cool fellow from it too. But like, they don't have HDD caddies and have floppy drives, total bummer for reselling for what I intended, they were made in 2004 and have 1.4GHz Pentium M I believe, I didn't know what it was spec wise but they were at a cheap price for my city.
Two have a fucked up screen, and one didnt have a keyboard.

One had a bios lock, had to remove the cmos battery to get rid of the password.
Wasn't as easy as removing the bottom plate, took some time, becaue you have to get to the motherboard. Maybe it would be possible with a special set of tweezers.

Tough as shit though I gotta say that, I want to fix one up and keep it in the trunk of my car.
>>
>>46745033

It's a good price for the units if they had HDD caddies. You're gonna sink almost twice as much into just one caddy as you did for all four computers.

Are the batteries still good?

I bought two CF-T7's recently for $15. They're great. I'm going to be getting some T8's for $25 shortly.
>>
>>46744258
2530p? That's cool. I was willing to pay a premium for the aesthetics of a thinkpad. x200s is a thing of beauty to me. It embodied the "bento box" look with the way the keyboard goes right up to the edges and cool minimalism with trackpoint w/o trackpad.

>>
>>46745140
Sadly it uses a UltraBay Plus drive which is one of the thickest I've encountered. It will not fit in a T43, I think the pinouts are different.

Believe me, I wanted to have a numpad ultrabay for a recent machine.
I had bought a W700 numpad and a ThinkPad USB keyboard to try it out.
The numpad's connector is the same size that you would find from a Z60 to T400's keyboard. I disasembled the external keyboard, got to that connector and hoped it would be a simple plug and play with the USB.
Sadly it did not work, but luckily it didn't brick the connector.
If I had better set of skills, I think I would be able to debug that shiz.
It would be a tight fit, but modifying a CD drive could work, the only issue would be connecting it to a USB. I would of soddered the USB connectors internally, but the downfall is that it would need to be disassembled if you decide to swap ultrabays. I think there was some sort of internal express card or PCI-e slot thing for USBs to where I wouldn't run the wires.

>>46745113
Havent been able to test it yet, but it took a charge and turned on without the AC adapter so I thought that was cool.

The W701DS is much better, 4 ram slots, FX3800M, i7 with a true quad processor. Oddly enough the HP 8740w sells higher than it. My guess is the IPS display. Waiting for one with unkown specs to be shipped, if it has an IPS display, I will try to see if it works on my W700ds :) and resell the Elitebook for twice what I paid if it accepts the ThinkPad screen swap.
>>

I get 'em cheap or I don't buy them, and when I add an SSD then my net result is better for my use case overall than something newer but with inferior storage.

Last X200 tablet I bought was 70 shipped. New Anker battery 34 bucks, had a Samsung Evo 120GB I'd gotten for 75 a while back. 170 gets me an excellent machine for my use case which is a breeze to work on and will last many years, just like my other Pads which have lasted many years. With SSD prices dropping the math is fine.

I don't need fast portables, I have an i7 desktop/20GB RAM (couple years old, nothing special as I don't gayme) and an i7 Dell XPS if I need a quicker lappy for something. I need fairly tough portables with matte screens since most of my content consumption is reading etc and I don't game.

The last T61 I got was 20 bucks shipped because the seller wrote a poor description and no one else bid. I know my Pads thanks to the thinkpads.com forums. It's now one of my shop PCs. Threw a leftover spinner drive in that since it's low priority but I need it for motorcycle manuals etc.

I'm fine with other brands if they serve me well but having a few Pads as standard is nice. I won't mourn if one gets dropped (yank the SSD, stuff in other Pad and back to work in ten minutes) or stolen or needs to come down for cleaning.

I have a WUXGA T61/600GB spinner/8GB for light CAD work (love the display), an X200 non-tablet 8GB/120GB Intel SSD for school, couple T61s in my shop buildings (keyboard skins work well BTW), X200 tablet w. Ubuntu for misc portable surfing (I don't surf using Windows) and to take with when fixing customer PCs, and a T61 for travel (little screens are a joke for GPS when you can have 15.4").

I've one customer who sells insurance, loves his T61s, and when he breaks it he buys another from me. He makes good money but prefers the keyboard and build quality tho he's not a /g/tard. He'd rather spend his loot on mortgage payments and vehicles. Perfect used Pad use case.

I daily my X61T with 4GB RAM, 1.6GHz L7500, SSD with Photoshop CS1, Inkscape and it works great.

As a matter of fact, I made the ThinkPad timeline from it.
Struggles but it played League of Legends, it got hella hot though, I would guess your machine would fare a lot better.

What programs are you going to be using? I need to know the 'market' so I can sell an X61T and maximize muh profits.

How much would you pay for a custom lid or replacement chassis for your thinkpad with Sandstone Black texture?

Hell, there's nothing wrong with the *30 models as the layout is still a little bit sane.

The *40 series is when it went full retard.

My uncle wants me to get a new laptop for him if he gives me the money, he has a £500 budget and I was thinking about getting him a thinkpad of some description as it seems like the sort of thing that he'd like.

Even though he has a £500 budget I'd prefer to try and save him some money by getting something that would fit his requirements for less. All he uses the PC for is browsing the web and watching pirated TV shows I give him that are in either 720p or 1080p.

Anyone here be able to point me to some models that would be able to do this in the price ranger?

Also where a good place to buy thinkpads online in the UK?

so i have a x230t with an IPS panel, do i have to worry about screen burn-in because i have terminal up on that screen most of the time while i have multimedia up on a lcd tv?
>>
>>46754017
have you noticed any screen burn-in...?
>>
>>46754017
I have some screen burn in since I play a lot of my media on my second monitor and leave things like 4chan up on the main screen. Now, I just get a pure black picture and "full screen" it to prevent further screen burn in.
>>
>>46754037
i thought i have but after rebooting or closing and reopening the monitor what i think is screen burn-in dissipates, sort of like a ghost image of what was previously on the screen. not quite sure to make of it.

i was just wondering if IPS is susceptible to burn-in or not as i would prefer if this tablet not require any sort of repairs for at least 6 years.

>>46754054
that is sort of what i am doing right now, i have it feeding video only to an external monitor so i can still use the keyboard and stick

What type of RAM does x201 support? Thinkwiki suggests "2, 3 or 4GB PC3-8500 or PC3-10600 memory standard, upgradable to 8GB" but I've found a thread on lenovo forums where even following the spec the ram wasn't working with the Thinkpad.

Installed Crunchbang and a 32GB SSD on a single-core X120e I impulse-bought last month. Used to be laggy as shit, but now it's lightning fast for Chrome browsing, Botnet Docs for work, plays 10-bit Chinese cartoons, and weighs almost nothing on top of it all. Is linux magical, or is Windows 7 just slow as shit on weaker hardware?

My refurbished T420 just arrived this evening.

-Impeccable cosmetic condition. Not a single scratch, scuff, etc.

-The only "mechanical" issue I have found is that the volume buttons seem to be "loose," that's the only term I can think of to describe them. It seems to actually be a single rocker button, and any pressure whatsoever can slide it around. It still works but I may pursue a fix soon.

I only got the standard model, 1600x900, Nvidia GPU, 4GB of RAM, 500GB HDD, etc. I'll be getting a Crucial MX100 and another 4GB of RAM in the next few weeks though and that should make things better.

As it is, I'm quite pleased with it and would strongly recommend the T420. I've played with the T430 and T440 and don't feel that they live up to the build standard, but your mileage may vary and to each their own.

yeah, I havent done it either, but connecting the cells in parallel would be dangerous if the cells have different charge by even the smallest voltage, just saw a battery on amazon and supposedly it is a genuine lenovo battery with a 12 month limited replacement warranty, my only worries is that the battery would not fit in my x6 ultrabase
one question however, what is the shelf life of a battery that is kept in good enviornment for storage? If this is the real deal I'm thinking about buying a couple for later

Really dumb question: I bought a replacement keyboard for my X201 because it came with a German one, which is azerty (or more accurately, qwertz) levels of retarded. Thing is, while the trackpoint does work, the mouse buttons don't. ThinkPads are great devices with great build quality, hardware, and convenience. It really depends on what model of ThinkPad to see that it is "highly out of date". Define "highly out of date". What is that supposed to mean when one can re-purpose old hardware?
Once ThinkPads are done being used as company computers or whatever it was before, their is an abundance of them that can still function to this day. As a student, my ThinkPad is the best investment I have ever placed into a laptop. I own an x200T and it's my favorite device to use for studying, word process, code, do some light-gaming, edit photos, and also browse the internet. I rather pay $130 on a dated machine that suits my needs than on a $1300 machine that is "triple the performance" because I don't need that on a laptop. I already built a computer for that.

Also, you seem mad, why is that?
