Can anyone tell me why LXDE on my Lubuntu looks way better than LXDE on Debian? I'm not really new to Linux, but I've never really played with different DE's. I just like LXDE since I run them in VM's and it runs the best.

I'd prefer to use Debian, but it's just so much uglier that I'll use Lubuntu for the better looks. Also should I try LXQt or XFCE? I tried GNOME and KDE Plasma but both ran a little too slow for me.
>>
>>46739448
Different theme or more up to date version, are you running debian sid or testing/stable?
>>
>>46739448
>1. It's themed niceley
>2. It uses the ubuntu font family, which look nicer
>3. It uses ubuntu default text rendering, which is the best default rendering of any distro.

Basically, LXDE on Debian is straight from the LXDE authors, whereas on lubuntu, it's configured by the distro team to make it look nice.
It's the same reason that OpenSUSE KDE looks way better than any other KDE configuration, the OpenSUSE devs have a team dedicated to just configuring the look and feel of KDE.

Themes are just default, but it's possible. I kind of figured that it was this, since Lubuntu still wants to look decent, while Debian ships with GNOME by default so their LXDE version is probably stock.

I'm running stable (wheezy) which could also be it, while Lubuntu is on 14.04. I can try installing sid but it's probably just the theme issue.

>>46739537
Thanks. I don't really like using *ubuntu since it's owned by Canonical, but I'll try to get over it. And lubuntu-desktop isn't in the Debian repos (assumed it wasn't, just hoped it might've been) and I really don't want to deal with themeing it myself for now.

is just lxde-desktop with some custom theming from the LXDE team.
You should be able to just copy the config files across to debian as long as you make sure you have the themes, fonts, and icon packs installed.

I'm currently finishing a CS degree at University, with a part-time job in a cafe.

You might want to note that the font rendering settings can be a bit tricky. Haven't quite figured that out yet.
>>

why?
>>
>>46739630
Ubuntu+Unity, assuming that if you are able to output to 3 monitors, you have something good enough to drive unity's animations on 3 monitors.
HD3000 on 2 monitors, even just switching workspaces causes frame drop.
>>

I got a 3570K at 4.6ghz water cool
and a 760 gtx

always had problems with drivers on this machine, all my servers & laptops been loonix for like 10 years though

and by "this machine" I mean my main rig
I haven't actually done real gayming in like 3 years so I am starting to decide it may be time to drop winblows all together, just checkin on what DE I should actually use to not have to fuck around with constantly

you really think unity would be the best? not like gnome3 or KDE5.2 or whatever the new one is?
>>
>>46739630
GNOME has the best support for multimonitor
>>
>>46739846
Go with Ubuntu. For the last 2-3 years, it has worked fluidly out of the box for me at least. Multi-monitor support works like a charm.

>In my opinion
Gnome 3 is terrible UI design. Far too many mouse movements, and it's rather unintuitive.
KDE Plasma 5 is still really buggy and comes with an enourmous amount of software that you will never use and cannot get rid of because KDE is a full desktop environment.

>>46739914
If you want to go with GNOME, the only distro with proper support for it, including driver support, is Fedora.
>>

kek
yea I prefer debian for all my servers for a decade so not gonna get me to switch to yum shit easily

I guess I'll try ubuntu or mint or some shit in that case if unity works I'll stay if not try mint

I got a 256ssd and 2tb hdd so loonix size won't matter, not like it'll be as bloated as windows is right now

& yea gnome is too weird like mac but trying to be slightly different.. to me, though if it turned out to work the best.. I wouldn't give a shit anyway

unity is like mac but not trying to be as different as gnome

both pretty gay at the end of the day

Debian is notorious for having GPU issues.
It works fine on Intel HD, because those drivers are FOSS from intel.
>>
>>
>>46739971

yea
even though my 760 is old.. debian definitely not going to fuck around with GPU drivers on that shit
there's so many problems with dedicated GPUs on deb due to their FOSS only shit etc
I don't have the time to fuck around with that shit, if I did I'd rice my shit too.. and be homeless with no job
>>
>>46740018
I actually think that the Unity team has an amazing UI team. It's the most efficient UI I have ever used. The only similarities to MacOS are the default style (shapes, not colours), and the top bar. Everything else that is similar was adopted by Mac OS from Ubuntu.

I used lubuntu for quite some time before recently switching to debian.
The debian LXDE looks bad, though a little wallpaper changing made it good.
But it bothers me to no end that i cannot set two different wallpapers on different desktops like lubuntu. Is there any fix?
Also how the fuck do i change time zone on debian? Its set to GMT
