Okay. I'm in the market for a laptop/ultrabook.
First: Lenovo: Aside from the superfish debacle, was alooking at them for a nice book. A check of the specs shows that the latest generation of ultra books, are frozen at 8GIG. Previous gen were upgrade capable to 16g. WTF?
Second: the de3ll xps 13 ultrabook, is stuck at 8 gig.
Clearly these companies are trying to borrow from apple in that a planned obsolescence in their flowcharts.
What is a good ultrabook to get that runs linux?

Depends entirely on the use case. Code compilation can take quite a portion of the RAM.

I only have 4GB, but I barely do anything on my computer so it's more than enough.
I put 8GB in my mom's home office PC but somehow it's not enough. I think it's because she refuses to use tabbed browsing, runs both Chrome and Firefox at the same time and never closes a window until she's ready to shut down the computer. Sometimes multiple instances of the same site will be open across both browsers for the whole day.

I have 12GB. I really only used like 7 at most, so I guess you can get by with 8GB. If I had 32GB though, I would do a ram drive and just have whole applications there.

Use sysinternals tools to check your swap usage.

the only way to make your system instable (bsod, kernel panic, whatever) is to apply rams with different brands AND speeds.
now... this PC runs all kinds of brands and speeds. but here is the trick: as long as you run them on a lower common speed (1066 in my case), they all work solid.
