The title may be a bit confusing... but how do you convince someone that their technology problem isn't a result of a particular action that they may have performed etc.
For example, A user at the office I work in believes that when she brought her laptop into work(her own personal laptop) and connected to our WiFi, her computer contracted a virus. Its a particularly nasty virus called cryptolocker I think. It encrypts all the data on the hard drive and then attempts to scare the user into paying some fuck head in brazil or some shit.
Anyway, long story short.. She is completely SET on the fact that our WiFi caused this when she connected to it and she wants our office reimburse her for the damages.
How can I explain to her that her connecting to our WiFi is more than likely not how she got this virus. I hate situations like this where the user just can't understand that maybe, JUST MAYBE it was something they did to get a virus.
Also, no other computer on our network has been affected by this at all. No other users report anything strange etc.
Counter sue. She brought an infected machine to your office and put your office at risk.

I guess what I am wondering is... is it possible that she is right? I highly doubt it because we haven't had any sort of case similar to hers in over 8 years and the last case of something even remotely similar to it turned out to be a user error as well.
Just how likely would it be that a virus could come over our network and infect a single machine? Again, no other machines have been affected as far as we can tell.

Can WiFi networks at enterprise locations even transmit viruses that way? It sounds to me like its a big coincidence. That virus she picked up was probably dormant on her laptop while it was encrypting her shit and then when it finished, popped up with that scare ware shit. Unfortunately, it probably popped up after she had connected to the network which lead her to believe the network caused it.
Basically, its her fault in my eyes. Especially if no other cases were reported.

Isn't cryptolocker a worm that tries to infect an entire network before it encrypts everything? So if her theory was correct, your office would be very well aware of the infection. Since only her laptop was affected, she obviously contracted it after disconnecting from your network.

As for the idiot bitch in your office, don't speak to her, speak to her boss. I don't speak to monkeys when I can get the organ grinder. No explanation is necessary, you owe her nothing. Tell the boss it's nonsense for the logical reason that if your business network was infected your business PCs would be down.
Also suggest banning the connection of any device from outside to the business network because the boss could be out serious money if his systems got nuked!

I had a dealing with that virus, rarely (2%) it geta unlocked and you Jave a set number od days to pay in bitcoins, but you can also buy it after you're dobe cleaning. Mostly happens with sin XP
Dont let her Connect, it spreads through anything (USB, WiFi, any connection). Boot your computer s in safe mode, get mwb and a AV od your choice in microsofts AV virus and run it. Some also fuck every exe in to a .lnk so watch out.

Basically, this. I've dealt with a few crypto variants and they've all been spread via email. It's also possible that she contracted it prior to bringing her laptop to the office. It takes awhile to encrypt everything so she may not have even known about it.

Cryptolocker comes in through java exploits embedded in ads.
I've also seen it lay "dormant" or whatever. Guy brings in his computer for a virus clean. Boot regular mode to make sure the whole thing isn't fucked, everything's okay. Reboot to safemode, clean off some shit, reboot to regular mode and LOL ALL YOUR SHIT BE ENCRYPTED YO.
