The title may be a bit confusing... but how do you convince someone that their technology problem isn't a result of a particular action that they may have performed etc.

For example, A user at the office I work in believes that when she brought her laptop into work(her own personal laptop) and connected to our WiFi, her computer contracted a virus. Its a particularly nasty virus called cryptolocker I think. It encrypts all the data on the hard drive and then attempts to scare the user into paying some fuck head in brazil or some shit.

Anyway, long story short.. She is completely SET on the fact that our WiFi caused this when she connected to it and she wants our office reimburse her for the damages.

How can I explain to her that her connecting to our WiFi is more than likely not how she got this virus. I hate situations like this where the user just can't understand that maybe, JUST MAYBE it was something they did to get a virus.

Also, no other computer on our network has been affected by this at all. No other users report anything strange etc.
>>
Counter sue. She brought an infected machine to your office and put your office at risk.

You explain how wi-fi works and start to slightly blame her, to then blame her fully.

>You can only get viruses when you access shady sites, like pornographic ones

I guess what I am wondering is... is it possible that she is right? I highly doubt it because we haven't had any sort of case similar to hers in over 8 years and the last case of something even remotely similar to it turned out to be a user error as well.

Just how likely would it be that a virus could come over our network and infect a single machine? Again, no other machines have been affected as far as we can tell.

What boggles my mind is, how the fuck do people get crazy shit like this on their computers? I have never had any kind of super malicious virus on my computer ever. Hell, I have never even had a minor virus. What the fuck are these chuckle fucks doing? Are they clicking unknown links and shit? Probably.
>>
Just make a fake fancy GUI hacker looking "Virus Detecter" and claim it can track the source of the virus. Just have a big button and when you press it, it displays "Virus Source: Internet Website". Then you can be like "see?".

>What the fuck are these chuckle fucks doing? Are they clicking unknown links and shit? Probably.
I killed our family's pc back when I was a babby and googled random shady shit
now I'm super paranoid about everything
>>
>>46695425
Man she doesn't know shit, she blamed the wi-fi because she's stupid.

It could be literally anything, USB, junk email, etc.
>>
I don't even bother anymore.

A wifes friend came over for dinner tonight and was complaining about her apple computer costing way too much.

So I mentioned that she could have just bought a regular ol' computer for half the price, an extra hard drive and whatever os she wanted and could've just dual booted it.

And she legit put her fingers in her ears and started saying "LALALALALA"

I just gave her a blank stare till my wife changed the subject.

Can WiFi networks at enterprise locations even transmit viruses that way? It sounds to me like its a big coincidence. That virus she picked up was probably dormant on her laptop while it was encrypting her shit and then when it finished, popped up with that scare ware shit. Unfortunately, it probably popped up after she had connected to the network which lead her to believe the network caused it.

Basically, its her fault in my eyes. Especially if no other cases were reported.
>>
>having substandard security practices
>allowing users to bring in their own hardware
>allowing users to execute non-verified executables
>not having your shit locked down tighter than fort knox
it's like you wanted this to happen
>>
Isn't cryptolocker a worm that tries to infect an entire network before it encrypts everything? So if her theory was correct, your office would be very well aware of the infection. Since only her laptop was affected, she obviously contracted it after disconnecting from your network.
>>
>>46695511

Its mostly because our office is also a part of a university with a open wifi connection in some buildings like the library.

Also, that particular user kind of broke some rules and brought in her own unit when she was not supposed to.
>>
>>46695546
>that particular user kind of broke some rules and brought in her own unit when she was not supposed to.
well you can just throw it out then, they broke a rule and therfore it was entirely their fault
>>
>>46695546
>Also, that particular user kind of broke some rules and brought in her own unit when she was not supposed to.
Well shit, why are you even having this conversation with her? It doesn't even matter where she got it. You had a rule against BYOD, she ignored it, so even if she did get the virus at your workplace it doesn't matter because you're not liable.
>>
before you call her stupid, you should check yourself

This is something that is exploited already!
>>
I don't convince them but if necessary I'm quite willing to say "You don't have any idea what you are talking about, so stop talking about it to me" if not in a delicate work or family situation.

As for the idiot bitch in your office, don't speak to her, speak to her boss. I don't speak to monkeys when I can get the organ grinder. No explanation is necessary, you owe her nothing. Tell the boss it's nonsense for the logical reason that if your business network was infected your business PCs would be down.

Also suggest banning the connection of any device from outside to the business network because the boss could be out serious money if his systems got nuked!

Delivery - Hotels/Business Centers and Indiscriminate Spread
Hotels and Business Centers Spread
The Darkhotel APT’s precise malware spread was observed in several hotels’
networks, where visitors connecting to the hotel’s Wi-Fi were prompted to install
software updates to popular software packages.

Stick your tongue up her ass. Then mansplain the internet.
>>
If she broke the rules just tell her so.

While you're at it just tell her that connecting to the wireless internet at your place doesn't contract a virus, as there's anti-virus software running.

Don't try to nice it up.
>>
>>46695586
shhhh, OP needs to believe he knows more than a woman.
>>
>>46695618
In other words, the user is a big fat idiot.
>>
>>46695785
yes, of course this relies on the user.

However, don't be so quick to say it's not feasible.
>>
>>46695825

Feasible is irrelevant in regards to the dumb chick. If you contract a virus through pure stupidity, then you are too stupid to have a functioning computer.
>>
What I plan on telling the user is "After doing some research, we determined that the particular virus you have on your computer can lay dormant until it finishes its processes at which point it will display the messages you see on your screen now. Due to the fact that this virus can lay dormant, we cannot be certain as to when you contracted it. No other unit on our network reports any issues and no other user reports any issues."
>>
>>46695966
I would just say "prove it or fuck off."
>>
>>46695966
>>46696062 has the right idea. She made the claim that your network infected her system. She has to provide the proof that it was definitely the connection to your network, not her own fuckery, that caused Cryptolocker to shut her down. Ask her to prove her claim, not just scream that there was no other way it could've happened.. She won't be able to.
>>
>>46695443
Holy shit, hahaha, underrated fucking post.
>>
You don't need to convince the woman of anything. Just tell your boss that what she is claiming is bullshit because networks don't work like that. When she drags you to court, explain it to the judge. Let her pay your legal fees when she loses.
>>
>>46695332
>she brought her laptop into work

Unfortunately when the business, the people who pay for the IT service, demand BYOD then you have to do it.
Your job is to flag risks, mitigate them as far as you can, but you can't refuse or they'll get someone else who can do it and you end up job hunting.

I would tell her what I think. And it's up to her to decide if she believes it or not. That's all you can do.

I used to get too much when I was teenager messing with windows xp (pirating from some website made by arabs and shit like that) browsing with internet explorer 6.
If you are not too paranoid in the beginning itself, then you learn with your mistakes only.
I became good at judging shit online after fucking up and reinstalling windows 2-3 times

This, when logic fails, release the dogs of law.
However:

jesus christ how horrifying.jpg

The IT staff are partially to blame here for being slack but thats a lesson learned fast, beat their ignorant ass down then fix the policies.

>>46695332
I basically talk people into submission. I can ramble on about something forever, if people allow me to (though I eventually pick up on the silence and vacant look in the eyes most get).

I don't use overly technical lingo, I just talk exhaustively about the subject until the person in question cannot think about anything else.

If that fails we move onto the head-cage and a bag of rats.
>>
>>46699257
I do this too. Especially when one my family's devices breaks because shitty parts. Can't tell you how many time I've had to ramble a manager to death at Apple because THEIR DEVICES ARE PERFECT AND CAN NEVER BREAK EVER.

tell her to prove it
she's set. she knows nothing but already made up her mind. no explaining will help so don't bother

>>46695425
but if you really feel the need to explain it, tell her that wifi is merely a transport medium, like a road. if her car isn't roadworthy she can't sue the council maintaining the roads.
next, research cryptolocker and tell her what the attack vectors are. i believe it was mainly email and trojans. basically tard magnets. tell her this software ransoms important data, of which your business surely has lots. if it came from your machines, surely you're office would be getting ransomed right now

bring in your own laptop and join it to the wifi
>>
I had a dealing with that virus, rarely (2%) it geta unlocked and you Jave a set number od days to pay in bitcoins, but you can also buy it after you're dobe cleaning. Mostly happens with sin XP
Dont let her Connect, it spreads through anything (USB, WiFi, any connection). Boot your computer s in safe mode, get mwb and a AV od your choice in microsofts AV virus and run it. Some also fuck every exe in to a .lnk so watch out.
>>
>>46695332
There is no such thing as Computer Infrastructure Error, there is only Human errors.

Insist that it's HER faulth and show her its HER faulth that she has the virus no other machine on your network has that problem and everything was working fine BEFORE she used her machine.

SHE is at fault, not you, not the network, not the company.

It was her computer , she was using it of her own free will , she pays the price.
>>
>>46699673
Basically, this. I've dealt with a few crypto variants and they've all been spread via email. It's also possible that she contracted it prior to bringing her laptop to the office. It takes awhile to encrypt everything so she may not have even known about it.
>>
>>46700144
I got one from downloading porn using utorrent... I know, I know. I'm ashamed.
>>
Cryptolocker comes in through java exploits embedded in ads.

I've also seen it lay "dormant" or whatever. Guy brings in his computer for a virus clean. Boot regular mode to make sure the whole thing isn't fucked, everything's okay. Reboot to safemode, clean off some shit, reboot to regular mode and LOL ALL YOUR SHIT BE ENCRYPTED YO.

>Also, no other computer on our network has been affected by this at all. No other users report anything strange etc.

There's your solution. If the problem was your company's wifi, then other machines would be infected.

You could also explain that wifi is just access to the internet, nothing more.
>>
>>46700417
Where can i learn about these exploit
>>
>>46700417
That's one way it can happen. Big way was also via email using double extensions like "invoice.pdf.exe"
