What's a good frontend for mpv? I need something to give to normalfag vlc users. MPV is just too strange and weird for them to use.

>where are the settings?
>how do I open file?

My file manager opens stuff by default in mpv and having the settings all in a single config file is much easier than navigating 20 fucking menus for shit.

No you don't. You want a shitty plebby frontend for yourself because you're stupid, and you don't want /g/ to make fun of you

bakamplayer. But it's very early in development.

>mpv needs

It doesn't need anything. it's a backend. It will always be a simple KISS backend. It will always do everything media player wise, but the minimal for anything else.

Do you know what a playlist is? You sort the media files in the playlist file

That's plainly false, you can easily set a keybind to show the playlist via OSD.

You can see the files in your playlist by shift clicking the playlist arrows if you use the OSC. Otherwise you can bind a key for it, something like

I have media keys on my thinkpad (fn+arrow cluster) but mpv has its own.

Can I get it to use my media keys for play pause forward etc.? I guess with the config file, right?

Also in windows is there any reason to use mpv over a fully configured mpc-hc with madvr and the usual stuff?

thanks
>>

>Can I get it to use my media keys for play pause forward etc.? I guess with the config file, right?
Yes, start mpv with --input-test --force-window --idle and press the keys to see how mpv sees them and then bind them in input.conf (see https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/blob/master/etc/input.conf for reference)
>Also in windows is there any reason to use mpv over a fully configured mpc-hc with madvr and the usual stuff?
mpv is lighter I guess. Quality should be the same (with vo=opengl-hq) so it's just a matter of preference
>>
>>46623451
>ever media player needs a proper playlist,

mpv is not a full media player. It's a media player backend. It's the updated version of mplayer. Light, portable. Other people then take that backend and make their own fully furnished media player.

Coders hate GUI code and all that. They just want to deal with the guts of the program. No GUi really helps keep them focused.
>>
>>46623840
That's not the problem, it already has an OSD and I don't see how it can't be extended to support a visible, sortable playlist.
>>
mpv is pretty stable right now, shouldn't be too much time until default video viewers in KDE/MATE/GNOME start using it as a backend.
>>
>>46623857
Well get on it then, if it seems so easy to you.

What's stopping you?

Have you even filed a feature request?
>>
>>46623857
>and I don't see how it can't be extended to

That's the problem. You grant that. Then someone says "well, it's not much more work to include..." and then you're adding this and that and everything. All bloat. All not needed.

Remember: mpv is a backend. Bare bones. Minimal.

Use a frontend for it if this minimal stance is not to your liking.

bakamplayer and smplayer (mpv version) are in early works. Neither are 100% bug free. We'll just have to wait for >>46623873

I don't know where you got the idea that mpv is not a full media player, and is a backend, but it's completely wrong.

Not denying it.
The fact that it can move the video up to reserve 2 lines for subtitles but only in full screen is pretty neat when you're using a 16:10 monitor.
Subtitle search and downloading, and thumbnails when you hover the seek bar is also rad.
It's bloated but at least you get a lot convenience to compensate for it.

No, this is blatantly false. It's designed to be perfectly usable on its own.
>>
>>46625500
there's two interpolation techniques which get confused with each other every time the term "smoothmotion" gets mentioned

one involves frame blending, where adjacent frames are blended instead of simply duplicated, similar to how pulldown works

the other is full frame interpolation, where you generate entirely new frames based on adjacent frames, attempting to create an approximation of what such a frame would have looked like if it was in the source file
>>
>>46625555
>one involves frame blending, where adjacent frames are blended instead of simply duplicated, similar to how pulldown works
Yes, and this does not seem to correspond to what's implemented.
>>
>>46625500
I see. I guess I'll wait for some update and then test smoothmotion again: right now it produces some stutter on my machine (though actually is a bit better with that recent commit) and I don't know if it's due to my laptop not-so-great old discrete GPU or something else.

>If you're on windows, MPC-HC+madVR+xy is still the best choice though.

I think smooth motion is the only place where madVR is better still. But development of mpv is much faster than MPC or madVR, and it will soon fully eclipse or surpass it. It already has most of the other madVR features. Plus it's portable, open source, better coded and less CPU/GPU intensive.

mpv is, if you support open source software what should be supported.
