All the Linux distributions I've tried (quite a few) couldn't recognize my on-board audio, and some had issues recognizing other hardware on my system.
XP is secure enough with TrueCrypt, Pale Moon + NoScript, a decent router, software firewall and full-volume encryption. I just don't go around torrenting shit with keygens and viruses.

I did troubleshoot. There just weren't any drivers for my hardware included with those distributions. I tried searching through their package databases for other audio drivers, but didn't find any. In some cases, the hardware did show up in ALSA mixer, but still wouldn't produce any sound output. (and no, the volume wasn't muted)
The only other hardware issues I've had were a lack of monitor or graphics support, or at least full feature support. One distribution locked my desktop at 1440x900 at 16k color depth and wouldn't support any other setting. Another wouldn't even open the settings panel because it couldn't recognize my monitor.
The computer I'm using is an old Gateway E4300 pulled from an office environment. The audio is some on-board Intel chip, but it shouldn't be anything particularly obscure.

The hardware in that computer should be supported. Your display issue might be an EDID issue if it's outputting the correct resolution. Did you at least try changing the color depth manually?
It's also worth asking if you actually installed Linux as opposed to just running it from a Live CD.

You really should try watching an anime such as Code Geass.. I've recommended that anime to many people for their first anime and no one has rated it any lower than 9/10.
Anime just gets a really bad reputation due to the fan base but the plots are some of the best i've ever seen compared to western TV/Films.
But if you think about it this way.. You have basement dwellers who waste their lives away doing nothing but watching anime.
