as your pic suggests, you may go with refurbished old nokia phones starting with 7xxx/8xxx series. they are pretty premium. they were the shit back in the day.

the newest nokia dumbphones are geared towards cheapness, except 515. do you care about looks?

Get an old MemeBerry, like the Bold 9900. They should be sufficiently dumb that you don't have to worry about buttnet (I'm assuming this is why you want a dumbphone?) but you'll still get some of the features of smartphones, like browser, GPS, and a full keyboard, which may occasionally come in handy. Plus you can probably find one for like $50 now.

dumb phones still can be tracked, even if they have no gps chip they still give away their location to the tower.

the dumb phones gsm protocols still make it easy to exploit since every phone has the gsm protocols.

most likely also has some of the backdoors for the nsa.

So yea, dont bother with any phone if you value your privacy.
>>
>>46232805
Whichever you want. I liked Nokias from E series and if i would use them now, modern Ashas.

>>46238055
just saying, this gsm-based tracking isn't some conspiracy theory. At some point in my life, i was using my Treo 680 as a simple navigation using this feature - my treo hadn't any gps module. I couldn't use it continuously, it required manual update on location but still - it worked.

>>46236878
Either blackberry q10 (have one, love it) or Droid 4/Photon Q if you really just can't let android go. I still keep my droid 3 for my nerdic needs like linuxes, qwerty is great and big enough to fit every key you may need. I even wrote scripts and simple programs on linux with this keyboard, they're great - but 512mb of ram is probably not enough anymore (for everyday use, for my linuxes is more than enough) if you would want to get D3 - so, D4.
But for best end-user experience, you just can't beat blackberries if you want anything qwerty.
>>
>>46238188
the most privacy conscious thing right now would be a tablet, without the gsm functionality. The tablet of course would also need to have arm, or some other non closed sourced hardware alongside with some nationwide wifi payed service that does not exist yet. At least our wifi things are a shitton more secure than the gsm protocols.

Seriously, as long nobody audits them to prevent man in the middle attacks (faking cell towers as well), plus a huge host of other issues with them. Cell phones can be considered extremely insecure.
>>
>>46238055
Not even the Blackphone?
>>
>>46238357
nope, the gsm protocols come before the os.

http://www.osnews.com/story/27416/The_second_operating_system_hiding_in_every_mobile_phone

and NOBODY, not even the russians with their "secure" yotaphone 2 have addressed these issues.

If you were to treat phones, (all phones) with the same standards as we treat pc's. They could ALL be considered a security and privacy liability.

Even landlines would have higher security than them since only the spooks can easily tap into them, not some random stranger with enough money to buy a fake tower.
>>
>>46238391
ohh great. well, at least the baseband is insecure, so we can crack it pretty easily.

do you know if there are phones where the OS can work around the baseband? i assume it's not super low-level hardware stuff, just kernel modules pulling data from the baseband cpu.
>>
>>46238422
No, I dont know more than that, been reading a bit through the comments of the article and apparently the open moko or whatever that phone is called does not have this.

But yea, what I wrote before is true, ALL phones, even the dumb ones have this.

Blackphone most likely as well, especially apple with their "encryption". The secure yotaphone 2 edition that putin handed to the president will fall for the same tricks as well.

the GSM protocols are just so bad. We need a new bundle of protocols, GSM2.0 that has all the security and authentication that we expect for our modern age.

Too bad that it wont be done since this issue isnt getting much attention. If we riled up the peasants a bit someone might take notice.

Personally I hope that someone rich enough will but a tower, or at a defcon will demonstrate exactly how to practically fuck with it.

wow that is pretty cool, I shall paste this link a couple of times into threads. Might get some light on this problem, you should do so too in app threads for phones.
>>
>>46238487
Also, its just one possible attack venue, GSM has a lot of different protocols to handle lots of different things. Perhaps there are others who are bad as well or are exploitable that we do not know about.
>>
>>46238500

I was considering switching from dumbphone to iPhone.
Why did you make this decision?
I'm using a dumbphone made by MaxCom. It's a polish company, but they are produced in China.
I got the cheapest one that was in store, it has dual sim, annoying ringtons and sometimes people don't hear me well, so maybe there's something wrong with the microphone. Also, something's loose inside, so when you move your head, you hear an annoying sound. What's cool is that it seems to have a function to block unwanted numbers, but I didn't test it.

MM131 Dual Sim.
