I know this is probably an ironic post but I feel like replying anyway.

The biggest complaint besides arguably poor value, is that the software doesn't allow certain "freedoms", particularly an accessible file system.

the other week I had around £500 to spend on a new phone, I could have chosen the iPhone 6 but I decided against it for the following reasons:

It's locked down
Battery life is shit
No file browsers
No customization
Doesn't play videos or music of all formats
Cannot torrent
You have to jailbreak to do anything
iTunes

Could go on all day, they're not bad but compared to Android they are not worth the money.

the phone is useless without the app store, it isn't even a smartphone it's an application interface, every year they offer minor differences and clam it's the best ever for marketing hype and people buy them annually when they can get the same features if they just wait for the OS update, have have no special features, sony, HTC, and oppo have all taken the build quality standpoint which used to be a key selling point for the iphone so other than liking iOS the iphone is no competition for all the other devices for sale.

Personally, for me it is more the lack of improving the OS since iOS 5 and the glitches that come with updates.

Seriously, years ago iPhone was fine. Hell, I actually PREFERRED iOS to Android years ago because of the app selection and crap specs Android phone had years ago that caused it to slow down or run out of memory easily. I still hold the iPhone 4 in high regard for the decent screen and apps it had at the time, and how easy it was to jailbreak.

Now? Not so much. I actually upgraded from a iPhone 5 to a Note 4 because I was tired of the glitches iOS 8 brought and the lack of removable storage/not being able to upgrade.

I have used Android since 1.5 and iOS since 3.0 and while Android was not too great until 4.0, it has come a loooong way and has caught up in both phone design and software. While it is nice that Apple is finally offering bigger phones, it still lacks a bunch of features Android has and charges a premium when it should not (That, and 32GB should be the base on all its devices, not 16GB).
>>
>>46155655
i am convinced the 5s is best mobile device ever made
>>
I had an iPad and overall I didn't like it. Apps have their own secluded space, so you can't drop a bunch of video or music files into a single directory and access it in multiple apps. There's very little freedom to do much of anything. Third party browsers will always suck on iOS because Apple's policy is to force everyone to use WebKit.

iOS looks nice, it runs smoothly, the app selection is better, and it's friendlier to non-tech people. Lollipop solves nearly every issue with stability, smoothness, etc, so the gap is pretty small now. In the end, I gave the iPad to my gf, got a Galaxy Tab Pro, and rooted it.
>>
>>46156214
You do know Lollipop is the worst OS ever.

KitKat is the last good Android OS.
>>
>>46156214

>>
>>46156326
Used to not be that way. App Store used to have the advantage years ago, but ever since the horrid redesign and stricter policies on what can go up, it has been harder to find anything.

Back during the Android 2.0 days? App Store was better. More main stream apps then Android, and just better quality all around on the iOS side. Now? They are about even on quality and the Play Store is easier to navigate.

You're so invested in the old ways, that you can't even see how iOS singlehandedly deprecated the whole filesystem concept.

You wanna edit a photo?
>Open the photo editor, all the photos available to you, no need to locate the photo file and then open with the editor

You wanna watch a movie?
>Open the player, all the movies available to you.

Etc. .

Humans think in actions, not files.
They think "I wanna do that".
They think in software.
"I wanna edit, manipulate, write, send, etc.".

That's why the new paradigm, based around apps that do things, is more intuitive, than the abstract file location and then manipulation paradigm of the past.

Actually, this paradigm debuted on the Newton, but the product was 15 too early in the market, just like the first Windows tablet PCs of Gates.

Facts: A typical iPhone out of the box, is much *less* locked down than a typical Android, because of carrier restrictions/crapware and manufacture bloat/malware.
A jailbroken iPhone is as "unlocked" an any rooted Android, except some Samsungs that cannot be reverted to stock and reset the counter (all iPhones can be reverted to stock and there's no counter).

>Battery life is shit
It depends.
iPhones easily outperform Androids with the same dimensions.
How couldn't they, seeing they have a 1-gen ahead processor that affords them to use less cores and lower frequencies and still outperform qualcomms. Add to that the very efficient OS and the hardware+software optimization.

>No file browsers
Check (>>46156552)

>No customization
The opposite.
You seem to be confusing customization with ricing your desktop/homescreen.
In phones, you can can have as many functions, as your apps allow you. You can accomplish as many tasks as there are apps for.
In phones, customization is app selection and quality.
In that regard, iOS has a clear advantage, seeing most professional and productivity apps are written first (or exclusively) for it.
Same for games.

Eh I thought about getting a 5s a couple weeks ago but I wouldn't be able to block ads system wide unless some skiddie found an exploit to jailbreak. Not only that but physical buttons break. My ipod touch home button broke and it was unusable until I could activate the accessibility option which made on screen button. No.
The library format is the neat organization.

You have a movie library, a photo library, a texts/dosuments library, etc. .

You can have any hierarchy, favorites, sorting options, etc. in each library.

Then, a text editor has automatic access to the text library.
A photo editor has automatic access to the photo library.
A movie player to the movie library, etc. .

Of what use is trying to open a file with an app that doesn't support it?
Of what use is being flooded with all the files (even the ones that aren't compatible with the app), when I click the "open" dialog in an app?

I've played with android phones for a month before I got my iPhone. I'm so glad I didnt listen to all these haters talking about better specs and more customization which I love to do but shit you know what the goddam iPhone is sexy and yes simple. It's not perfect but I'm far more satisfied being taken for my money than be stuck with android phone. Everyday I love my phone even more.
>>
They're designed for different audiences

The iPhone is designed for a crowd who appreciates quality, simplicity, ease of use, and an overall cohesive experience of hardware and software. People with jobs, friends, meaningful relationships and fulfilling lives use iPhones

Android is catered to the kind of person who likes wasting time ricing their cell phone and arguing over which plastic Chinese piece of shit has the best specs

Android users on /g/ are generally losers or neets. Anyone with a successful life wouldn't waste their time torrenting on their cell phone or spending countless hours putting custom roms on their cell phone, or making custom anime themed home screens in UCCW.

>Third party browsers will always suck on iOS because Apple's policy is to force everyone to use WebKit.
There's actually some solid reasoning behind this.

Web rendering engines are by far one of the largest vectors of malware on any operating system. By mandating the use of webkit over any other engine, they've reduced one pool of vectors down to an area that they have control over. This is actually one of the main reasons that iOS malware is so rare in the wild.

But you see, that's just the problem. Fandroids so often see things like ricability as a "need" when in reality it's very much a "want". Nobody actually *needs* to be able to theme their launcher much in the same way that nobody needs shoes that glow different colors depending on the wearer's body temperature. It's interesting, but at the end of the day superfluous to the core functionality of the device.

If you *want* to be able to rice your phone, that's fine and wonderful, but present your desire as a want instead of a need.

I've had 3 iPhones, and I've just swapped over to android. Here's why:
1. I don't want to use iTunes, and you can't add anything to an iPhone without that piece of satanism.
2. I don't agree with apple's DRM policy. If I buy a movie, I want to be able to play it on all of my devices, not just the apple ones.
3. I don't want my phone to start magically slowing down just before my contract is due for renewal.
4. I want to be able to add whatever program I like without invalidating the warranty.
5. They are both Satan in my book, but I trust Google marginally more than Apple.
6. I want to use Linux as my main OS.
7. I don't want to contribute to the sh!t conditions that Foxconn employees work under.

>2. I don't agree with apple's DRM policy. If I buy a movie, I want to be able to play it on all of my devices, not just the apple ones.
Then don't buy it from iTunes store?
iTunes store is an extra, that doesn't even exist elsewhere.

>3. I don't want my phone to start magically slowing down just before my contract is due for renewal.
iPhones have the fastest updates and the longest support, because of hardware+ software optimization, and because Jobs told the carriers to fuck off.

>4. I want to be able to add whatever program I like without invalidating the warranty.
There's no way to void the warranty in iOS, using software alone.
Ironically, some Androids on the other hand have counters, so you can't root them without voiding the warranty.

>5. I trust Google marginally more than Apple.
That's totally misguided and dangerous.
Google makes its product free and makes money through ads, by selling the user to advertisers.
Apple makes money through hardware, and sees privacy as a competitive advantage to sell said hardware to consumers.
Stuff like no-track option, popup blocking, etc., debuted on iOS.

>6. I want to use Linux as my main OS.
I prefer a polished Unix with extensive pro software support.

>7. I don't want to contribute to the sh!t conditions that Foxconn employees work under.
Then don't buy anything.
Apple's Foxconn workers are some of the best paid, according to reports.
Also, only Apple checks the working conditions and imposes sanctions to the manufacturer, if it finds the working conditions are bad.
True, capitalism is pure exploitation, but other companies couldn't care less.
>>
>>46165288
Who mentioned custom ROMs? I have 2 rooted android devices (Tablet & Phone) both running stock ROMs. It's neat option to have as opposed to not haing it at all [cough iOS cough]. As for adblock it's not all that difficult to set up: Get the apk, install, open, press the button and that's it.

>>
>>46165396
>iPhones have the fastest updates
the updates may be fast, but your phone is slower after the update.

everytime a new iOS version came out my iphone was considerably slower
>>
>>46165457
If you've jailbroken an iPhone, it's perfectly possible to run a modified version of iOS, or if you can somehow obtain drivers, install an entirely different OS. It's just that there's not much reason to do so, because as of iOS 7 and 8 most of the things people previously jailbroke for are built in and jailbreaking covers that tiny handful of other things that people may want.

>>46165494
Optical discs are the new floppies. With the advent of high-speed internet connections, there's little need for CDs and DVDs for software distribution and even DL DVDs are a poor option for backup when you can buy a 500GB - 2TB portable HD that holds hundreds of times more information in a fraction of the space. This will be even more true when we have cheap 250GB and 512GB SD cards in a couple of years.

BDs/DL BDs are passable I guess, but very few computers are equipped with BD drives and the discs are expensive.

TLDR optical is old and busted, stop being a luddite.

>the porn you look up on your computer doesn't come up in your phones search history
I've never had this problem. You can delete your search history if you do.
>no lag
I have no lag on my original Moto X
>charges extremely fast
Moto X charges really fast and gets better battery life than most iPhones, although I'm almost never in a situation where I need to charge it fast because the battery easily lasts me all day.

The people on /g/ that think iPhones are totally shit are in denial. They have some drawbacks, but are really good overall.

Not really.
You're probably talking about 4th year upgrades, that indeed make the phone slower (iPhone 4 with iOS7, 4S with iOS8, etc.).

But even at three years, iPhones run great, as new.

On Android, updates stop after a year, and even Google-backed phones, like the Nexus, are officially unsupported after 2 years.

Wile on Apple you get full support and performance for 3 years, and an extra year of support if you're willing to sacrifice performance.
