I reckon majority of /g/ are in their early to late 20s. Do you think you were born in the right time to enjoy technology or would it be better to be born 20 years later?

I can honestly say I don't miss growing up in the days of DOS or 56k dial-up. Being born 20 years later would be nice but at the current rate our resources are being depleted and increasing rate of population, things might not be too comfy.
>>
>increasing rate of population
>resources being depleted
These are very localized events.
First world countries aren't in danger of overpopulation or resource depletion. In fact, many are facing crises due to low child birth rates (Japan now, and later the US and Russia), which get supplemented by increased immigration.
>>
We're basically at the golden age of the free internet and cheap, inexpensive computing, accessible to anyone.

Expect that all to change in 20 years when computers are dumbed down to ultra-thin tablets that only use cloud storage and compilers, along with all forms of encryption are reclassified as cyberweapons, banning the practice of recreational programming and local storage.

It's only going to get worse from here on out.
Savor your modern life while you can.

28 year old here. I'm sure I'd enjoy tech regardless of when I was born.

People enjoyed technology for ages. The only reason the stuff like mainframes that use tape or punch cards don't get the love they deserve is the lack of mainstream exposure due to the price and every day capabilities. But many of the few people who used those machines enjoyed them for what they did.

In the future there will be even more capable, cheaper and easier to use machines, that will make today's computers look like the DOS with 56k modems you're talking about. Should I wait for those things to enjoy tech? Nope
>>
i'm pretty with where i joined in, i'm 24

i feel like if i were much younger, i wouldn't have gotten much of a chance to mess with systems that required some knowledge to use

children growing up with ipads now might not even consider computer more than just an appliance, and i'd hate to have been that

if anything i might have liked it if i was a bit older
>>
>>46112814
Ya increase of population is not really an issue, but rather the aging population which there are less and less younger people to support them. Its a cycle. I'm hoping people will start to use less resources. From where I'm working as part time, paper wasting is a huge problem I think.
>>
>>46112850

>>
>>46112814
Resource depletion is very real and will affect everybody regardless of country. The Saudis already admitted that they only have 40% of their previously reported oil reserves.

We need to find another feasible energy source or we'll be flung back to the stone age.
>>

>>
>>46112819

>>
>>46112822
I pity the folks who had to jerk off to ASCII porn in their teenage years when sex drive was at its peak due to puberty.
>>
>>46112901
Where do you think electricity comes from, young man?
>>
I'm 19 and I'm happy with where I'm at, although I kinda wish I was born a bit sooner so I could enjoy Ultima online an such. At the same time I at least got to enjoy AOL chat rooms and Newgrounds and memes before they were "mainstream", plus I'm getting into my EE career right as VR tech breaks into the mainstream so I'm hoping to be able to help pioneer that while it's still infant.

Technology in its current stage is much too new to be able to really predict what it's going to be like in the next 20 years culture wise I feel.
>>
Personally I think living through the 90s and early 2000s was a much greater journey, it felt like we were going to turn into the jetsons, but then economic fuckery happened.
>>
It sucks having been born too early to enjoy all this tech during my school days but to see how quickly even the past 10 years have seen such exponential increases in technology advancements

Man
>>
To a certain extent I wish I was a young kid being exposed to technology when personal computing became big in the early-mid 80s so that maybe I could've started on a more competent level, but being where I am now I appreciate that I'm in an age where starting late isn't a death sentence, not to mention all the capabilities nowadays are nothing short of awe-inspiring.

The main thing I dislike about the current status of technology is the availability.

Normies can't handle it and it just consumes them. Girls can't put their smartphones down for 2 seconds these days. We were trained for this our entire youths, but they've been handed the keys to it all and it's sent them quite mad.
>>
I'm from 1989.

What sucked is that I loved computers from an early age (had tons of fun playing Syndicate and later Starcraft on a friend's 233MHz Pentium 2) but I had to wait until 2003 until my family could afford me a computer.

I lived in a minor city and on a far off neighborhood, and in 2003 all we had was dial-up. You would never get 56k though, you'd be lucky to get 20kbps or so. Downloading one song though KaZaA or eMule took forever. I'd spend an entire week trying to put together a CD so I could listen in it on muh Discman on the way to school.

I had an Athlon XP in 2002 and had to hold onto it all the way until 2009.

My sister was born in 1999 and now she has an Android phone, a desktop, and laptop.

In a way it fucking sucked back then. Now I can torrent a 320kbps CD in minutes. Movies are HD and so on. But in a way having to live on those spartan times and holding onto the same dying hardware for 8 years gives you some appreciation not everyone has.

Just my 2c.
>>
20 years later.

VR would be nicely polished and the greatest tech revelations every year won't be smartphones.
>>
>>46113011
It's not moving fast enough. I want my virtual sex sim and/or robot sex doll before I develop erectile dysfunction.
>>
I'm 22, I think I was born in a good time, then again hearing people talk about their awesome childhood in the 80s kinda makes me wish I was around in the time. Tech was also more fun, computing was much more barebones and you could learn much more. From now on tech will be heavily clad in oversimplification, prettiness and just general attempts to shield the user from the inner workings of any device. Nice for just getting shit done I suppose but nobody will know anything. The internet and some regulations/restrictions were also much more lax many years ago.

Funny that in 20 years with all the great tech we have, much, much less people will know how on earth it works.
>>
27 here
I think this is the age to be in now, all the kids now are being spoiled for tech just like we were because we had a computer in the house. The next couple of generations are going to suffer from all the mainstreamers trying to make things easier to cater to a wider customer demographic. Computers are getting smarter, people are getting dumber.
>>
>>46113170
>Computers are getting smarter, people are getting dumber.

I think uneducated and illiterate people have always been around.

The fact that computers (in all their forms) now reach a broader audience does not make them dumb, it only showcases what was already there.
>>
>>46113164

>>
>>46113119
Everybody born during that era or earlier feels the same way.
>>
Born in 1991 and our first PC was some Pentium running at 133MHz(was second hand) I've experienced enough of the evolution of computers to have a decent picture of what happened that I'm fine with living in the current time.

>rather the aging population which there are less and less younger people to support them
People will need to work until they are 70 in the near future and I do not think that is a bad thing considering the overall health of said people.

People just need to realize the worth of experience.

>I don't miss growing up in the days of DOS or 56k dial-up
i kind of do. Things were different. And i'm not talking like and old man "eeeh my time you damn kids"
Things were really different. Slower internet meant different approaches to the web. Less advanced systems meant you had to have different knowledge. You had to know what to do, like the internet was really the far west and computers were delicate machines that required knowledge to use.
Now things are really different

It's a good time. The dissolution of the old world order, once a whispered dream of 90s BBSes and sales pitch of dot com companies, is now a matter of public headlines. Computers have never been more powerful or more available, and we're witnessing a great schism in technology - locked down laptops and fondleslabs for the hoi polloi, and ever more powerful systems and open hardware for those of us that can make use of them, most of which run some flavor of open source unix-like.

And me? I'm sitting here in sweat pants shitposting at 3am while getting paid good money to be a sysadmin.

Anon, your problem isn't being born too early, It's being unable to live forever.
Try to stick around for another 20-30 years. You may see a time when we start to see regular lives of 150-200 years.

When that happens, and you are still alive and can afford the procedure, you'll be able to see the amazing feats.

Edgy as fuck, but if every single western country stopped flushing money down the sink hole that is Africa, and let them sort their shit out themselves, the world population would drop some 500.000.000 over a month. Same age, I agree. I believe we were born in the correct age bracket where we saw the rise of technology and actually used it while still going out and doing shit. Kids these days are superglued to their tech, back in the early 00s when I was in HS we had internet and phones but it was a big necessity or use. Still used to go outside almost everyday and play with friends, other times we gamed also but htese days it seems like kids would just stay inside.

Having a bike and riding it in the summer is nothing for them, hell I dont even think theyd enjoy a pool or super soakers in the summer now.

Never in history has technology taken such a huge leap as between 1990 and 2010. looking at the past 5 years i doubt it ever will again, we have reached the stagnation point of "soft technology" and the industry has started reinventing wheels and fine tuning existing technologies.

Next major advancement wont be until we create true AI that can be tasked with problems human minds cant tackle (there is a reason why google has hoarded all the experts and pours millions into the AI developement.)

I jumped from 56k to 4/1 to 20/4 to 100/100, about to upgrade to 200/200.
I think we had 28k as well but I was too young to understand that shit
It just made sounds from hell when it was connecting and I wasn't allowed to use it because lol phone costs.
The jump from 4/1 to 20/4 was so goddamn good holy shit I loved it. I think they upgraded that line from 20/4 ADSL to 40/4 VDSL somewhere at the end of my contract.

In today times you will be regarded as "that guy invented the computers". In today times you have to watch every word you say, have to double and triple check every place you go, because negative press can destroy you. In 30 years someone like Zuckerberg will be able to destroy you if he want because you do one or two stupid shit when you were 9 grade, same goes for the normal people, there will be record for all your life like it or not. You're spot on.

Back in the 90s you had people of all kinds and flavors and every kind of weird hobby out there. People even dressed in a funny way and loved to create shit. It was a very optimistic decade over all because at the time people were naive. Nowadays people are like a carbon copy of each other because they don't need to think, the media does it for them by dumping a massive amount of easily digestable information right through their throats.

I guess when you don't have easy access to every kind of info at the tip of your fingers like we have now, you have to create your own, exchange experiences and ideas with your friend and make new things. But now, even carefree stuff such as parties have been affected. Back then you'd go to one and you'd see a lot of crazy and funny shit. Nowadays you go and people are just sitting around each other in little closed islands glued to their phone consuming, consuming and consuming, but never creating anything. And the creative naivety has been changed to unproductive, judgemental malice.

Imagination has been killed, which is why even the general pop scene consists of copycating old shit because nobody actually makes anything new, hence the predominant hipster shit style that lives off of copying things that were new decades ago, pessimism is at an all time high and I think that says a lot about the current mindset of a society.

I think it is best for everyone to dismantle Russian nukes. Also, nuclear energy is one of the best (if not the best) energy production techniques.
I mean there's tons of uranium in the ground, we are never going to use it all.
see
http://www.world-nuclear.org/info/Nuclear-Fuel-Cycle/Uranium-Resources/Supply-of-Uranium/
>5,900,000 tons
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_uranium
> yearly consumption of 65 000 tons
means about 90 years of uranium, and it's all quite easy to mine.
After that, there's 4 000 000 000 tons of uranium in the seawater, giving us ENOUGH fuel.

No they won't. Common people want convenience first. As long as the provider provides, they won't care how. Look at Apple's popularity for evidence.

The problem is people are actively being trained into being consumers. Consumers don't need local computing.

For your sake I hope you're just an idealist rather than seriously that naive.

It's not like you're stuck being 14 or whatever age you are, you grow up like everybody and with age you gain more experience that will hopefully make you more intelligent. Of course I'll value somebody's opinions less if they're younger unless they're geniuses who can easily hold a conversation with adults without having to feel insecure about their age. Of course I'll naturally discard younger people's opinions much easier because of their age, because we've all been there.
Being older is not a goddamn privilege because everybody grows up, so please try to refrain from posting this kind of bullshit elsewhere.

Age 34 here, I have no regrets. I started with the Commodore 64, and I feel that in my childhood years I was just the right age to appreciate the new advances in technology. Modern flash memory is just about the only innovation I would've loved to see being available in the 80's. I was cool with everything else.

It won't replace computers because better tech is always bigger until it's cheap.

Not even an Apple fan, but the really of the iPad was a major turning point in history. Before 2010, it was pretty much standard that everyone used a computer, and when they wanted a computer, they wanted a real computer. But in 2010 when Apple released the iPad, it created a huge change in the industry. The tablet industry exploded, with companies rushing to release their own tablets. After 2010, the tablet started being though of by consumers as a viable alternative to the desktop, while desktops started being though of more and more as work/gaming machines.

Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean that it wasn't significant in history. I personally don't even like tablets, but this was definitely a historical event.

Also, all those "the desktop is dying" people know nothing about technology, and sound like they have never had a job, and don't realize that someone has to actually design, program, and host the crap that they use on there little tablet.

That being said, the tablet was very significant to history, since it marked a turning point where tablets became normie machines and desktops became le geeky work machines.

It's not retarded, it just escapes your realm of thought because you have no critical thinking skills.

You're putting me down solely based on the grounds that I have an arbitrary feature (my age), with no kind of actual argument with merit to it.

Judge people by the contents of their character, physical details are arbitrary.

Because you're an idiot with no thinking skills, I know you're going to say "well teenagers are idiots"
This is typically true, it's not an absolute. It's also typically true black people have an IQ of 85 and no higher education, this does not mean that you paint all black people with the same brush. Understand?

> everyone is in the same timezone as you

I really doubt it.

A person growing up back in the days of DOS or win 95 or web 1.0 could easily point to features they found sorely lacking in their computers. The lack of visual interfaces. Slow internet speeds. Ugly design. Etc.

What are the obvious areas for improvement now? Does anybody pick up a reasonably high end smartphone and go "God dammit, this thing is so fucking frustrating!"

Is anyone really unhappy with their download speeds these days?

As much as people like to talk about unbelievable leaps and strides in computing in the coming decades, the truth is that computers right now are a pretty mature technology. Once specs get to the point where every piece of shit laptop has more performance than the user would need, what are the obvious areas of advancement?

Batteries.
>>
>>46118078
For laptops it would be power and cooling, which will require the maturation of parts and design, for desktops it will probably be the implementation of wireless adapters as a standard, and eventually an all in one router/computer/printer/monitor or something like that
>>
>>46112888
In the future cars will run on hybrid technology that combines electric batteries with small combustion engines that burn hydrogen/ammonia/natural gas/maybe alcohol to charge the batteries.

Nuclear energy and, if there's a God, Thorium will provide us with electricity. I see no problem with our future energy needs other than big oil lobbying to keep the alternatives away from the market. the alternatives already exist, we just need to embrase them.

Your arguments are:
>hurr you have no critical thinking skills
>durr age is exactly like skin colour
Did you even read my post? Please tell me exactly where I said or even implied that teenagers are all idiots. And nope, teenagers are not idiots, they just lack exactly what you think I lack: critical thinking, which develops with experience and therefore age.
Are you saying that I should value a toddler's opinion in the same way that I would trust some guy in their twenties'? Because that's exactly your argument.
>>
>>46112739
naaa. I got to see the end of the cassette, rise and fall of the CD, and the domination of Digital Distro. Not to mention I still remember the days before 3d models in vidya.

>Did you even read my post? Please tell me exactly where I said or even implied that teenagers are all idiots.
You admitted yourself that you are prejudiced against teenagers and think their opinions are automatically nullified.

>Are you saying that I should value a toddler's opinion in the same way that I would trust some guy in their twenties'? Because that's exactly your argument.
You should value a toddler's opinion if the toddler has an intelligent opinion. Physical features are an arbitrary detail.

I can't change you, there's no room for reasoning with someone who has their mind made up already. But I hope you don't sleep well at night knowing how astoundingly short-sighted and hypocritical you are.

I never said, that, read again.

NO FUCKING SHIT. I don't expect the toddler to be able to come up with a sound argument for it, though, unless, like I previously mentioned, the toddler is a genius.

Being a teenager does not automatically mean your opinion is of less value.

>>>>>less
I understand. Someone's opinion is not automatically worth less because they're a teenager.

>NO FUCKING SHIT. I don't expect the toddler to be able to come up with a sound argument for it, though, unless, like I previously mentioned, the toddler is a genius.
You do not understand.
It is almost universally true that a toddler is a goddamn idiot that can barely even speak. It is not an absolute.
A toddler's opinion is not automatically worth less because they are a toddler.

Do you follow? Let me make it as clear as possible to eliminate any hangups:
It is usually true that teenagers are not very intelligent. It is not universally true every teenager is not intelligent and has nothing intelligent to say. If you rand every teenager with the same label of being unintelligent, you are horribly bigoted and should be ashamed.
>>
>>46118494
>stahp muh sides
Astute counter-argument.
>>
>>46118580
Please learn to read.
>>unless, like I previously mentioned, the toddler is a genius.
It is not universally true but it is almost universally true, the possibility of what you mentioned happening are so tiny it shouldn't even be taken in consideration normally.

And for the record, your post was not discarded because you're so obviously an underaged faggot, but because it's stupid.

I'm 19 and I barely avoided social media and having my real name attached to all of my shitty early internet behavior.

It's going to get even worse when everyone can see what you did everyday as a five year old.

Kids 20 years from now will probably have tracking devices implanted like fucking animals too.

All in all, I wouldn't want to be born 20 years from now. Things are only going to get worse for technology and concepts like free speech.
>>
>>46120082
How will politics and PR work in the future, when everyone in the first world will have at least 30 years of embarassing and compromising social media posts attached to their name?

I don't want to be a politician, but I could probably do that 20 years from now since almost everyone else my age looks like shitheads online.

Look at this example. This will follow this idiot to the grave.

This isn't even the worst example.

I'm glad I never did anything as stupid as this dumb little fuck. I'm glad to be a hkv. The alternative just isn't worth it.
