Not OP but I want a simple slab desk. What's a good place to get a design? Or post designs.

posting sitting at this desk. not a bad desk.
>>
Got a new desk yesterday, from Ikea.

It's a Malm (the one that comes with the pullout) - but when i get round to putting it together i'm leaving out the pull out panel. Cheaper than the one with drawers in it, and more legroom too. £115.
>>
>>45867414
I have the bigger version of that desk but with the 2 drawers in the front. Really solid desk surprisingly.
>>
>>45868612
Seconded, I've had mine for nearly a year. The Malm is the one to go for.

Why not use the pull out part, it's so handy for the extra space.
>>
>>45868612

This though mine was the version before it. I could have used the cable pouch. Eventually I took off the pull out drawer too since it became a dust collector.
>>
i got a corner galant for pretty cheap on craigslist.

more space for junk that shouldn't need take up space.

Ikea Torsby. Flat computer / work table. Wouldn't recommend any drawers or crap like that.
>>
OP here, I'm under a tight budget so would the mickie?(can't spell) work? It's under 100 and looks sosolid. Never bought from Ikea so i don't know their price to quality ratio
>>
>>45870484
Look at used/secondhand stuff...

http://craigslist.org/
>>
>>45870484
Most of Ikea's stuff has a very good price to quality ratio.

There's a reason why they kinda own the furniture business by now.

I'm still recommending the Torsby over all the other Ikea furniture for computers.

>>45870530 also has a point tho, used can be even cheaper & great.

2)Select the legs http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/workspaces/11845/

This is the only acceptable answer

My desk OP, It's extremely solid and has an L add-on

is there a /g/uide for tables?
>>
>>45870620
I did this
>$50 for a big relatively sturdy desk
pretty good
>>
Go to hardware store. Buy two file cabinets or two normal cabinets according to your height requirements. Buy a solid wooden door thats not been cut. Take these items home. Lay door over cabinets. You now have the last desk you will ever need. Its bigger, sturdier and easier to move than any other.
>>
>>45870713
I don't think so.

Besides in almost every case for a computer table, you just want to get a big flat one with straight legs.

If you can fit a Torsby, get that. If not, try >>45870620 or get a flat table in whatever way pleases you. You can even just put a board across stacked chests or whatever... as long as it's somewhat stable and big and flat and at a decent height, it will probably work.
>>
I'm using a $15 picnic table from Walmart. No useless cabinets in my way, no assembly required, portable, movable, light. Flimsy as fuck but I'm not a hyperactivity preteen so it never even moves.
>>
>>45870620
GALANT series was way better, but they dont get built anymore. BEKANT ist the new one, but they are shit with their rounded corners
>>
I'm looking for a desk too... and so far the best price/quality seems to be a Malm. Specifically the one with the drawer/cabinet at the side.

I have no idea how, but the quality of Staples desks have totally tanked. My old one was way better quality than what they have now.
>>
This may or may not be of help, but...
Ikea is always not bad when considering price. I'm about to drop some money on this:

78" x 24" x 1 3/8" desk top piece, available also in smaller sizes.

Two of these drawer units on each end as support (also buying clamps to securely screw in the desk top piece to these end pieces.)

A single support leg at the back end, in the middle, of the desk to help support the weight a bit. Will be using three monitors. Smaller desk sizes won't need these, but they also have other legs that can be used as direct replacements instead of those drawer items I shown as legs, which would be much cheaper.

This screws in underneath the desk to help conceal and hold cables. Cheaper and effective.

All together it's something like $230, but I've yet to see a desk passed 60" wide that isn't at least $300 else where. So, it'll look good and work just as good.
>>
Ikea desks you get what you pay for. My best experience getting a desk is just to use a dining room table, especially if you have a multi-monitor setup.

>Malm
I consider getting one, can you put the drawer part on the left instead of right side?
>>
>>45870897
Yes, the MALM with the drawers is reversible, and so is the other MALM desk with the pull out panel.

If you need space, and not drawers, I'd say get the pull out panel one. It can be completely removed and look fine, and is far enough to the side where you can stay relatively centered.
>>
>>45870930
Thanks a lot
>>
>>45870889
It'd be great to spend £500 or more on a proper desk, but i currently have other financial priorities.

An Ikea desk sounds like it'd be fine until i can get a good one.
>>
>>45870966
IKEA desks are fine. I spent $100 on one and its lasted for 3 years now. It sags a little, the drawers have a little resistance, and the outerwood is chipped and slightly warped in places, but if you don't mind about shit like that and just want something temporary, IKEA will do fine.
>>
For the longest time I used a plain wooden door, the kind you'd see in a half constructed building, on top of 4 stacks of breeze blocks. It was a hell of a lot cheaper than anything else. You can even use where the door handle is meant to be installed as a cable outlet.
>>
>>45870597
this is only $109 if you use this coupon code, 13324749
here's the whole write-up

>>
>>45870966
just get the heavier ones from ikea, not the cardboard-desks.
Get something like galant or bekant, they are really sturdy and good.
>>
>>45870992
Average use, or do you tend to punish it a bit?
>>

>>45870897
walmart has a desk that looks almost identical to that. I put it together for my father this christmas.
>>

There's no Walmart around here (Europe) but thanks for the tip
>>
>>45871019
I punish it. The desk didn't start to fall apart for a year and a half.
>>
Do not buy from walmart. "Mainstays" is a shit tier company. try this, it's quite large.

OP here. My plan is to get a desk big enough to put a mid sized tower on or under. I'm buying a lot of pc parts so budget is also in mind. From what I've read, Ikea is the way to go?

I guess, without it open the temps becoming dangerous, and wear on my parts are not of my interest.
>>45872274
A little cordage doesn't bother me, clearly.
But I plan on swapping it out or building an entirely new rig in the near near future.

shit, I wanted to sell my top galant (I have two, but only legs for one).

Go to Argos.

>>
>>45867414

Don't get a thick desk with a fucking drawer right beneath your legs

good luck fapping with that shit in the way, you'd have to push your chair back every time you felt like wanking
>>
>>45870897
I got the drawer malm for christmas. So far it's a really nice desk.
Lots of legroom, large surface, sturdy. The drawer is only has a thin bottom to it so don't expect to keep anything super heavy in it. Also it didn't come with the drawer divider like it shows in the images so that was a little disappointing.

It's also a bitch to assemble by yourself so try to get somebody to owe you a favor before hand.
>>
>>45872586
"build one" consists of getting a kitchen work top and screwing on some legs, it doesnt exactly take a degree in joinery.

What's there to design? Just get a wood surface and some table legs. You could buy everything from ikea.

My desk is 33mm baltic birch plywood (custom ordered from a shop, it's actually two thinner sheets glued together) with some ~55mm diameter metal legs from a store that sells used office furniture.
>>
I'm not a woman so I built one. Better quality than cheap plywood IKEA... Used a door and built legs for one side. Rested the other side on a book shelf I built a while ago

I got mine from an office liquidation place. Thing is a 200lb metal monster from some office that went under. 150 bucks.

it looks great and is very comfy.. The only thing is that i can't sit cross legged because, due to the drawer, the desk starts relatively low.. But, all in all, would recommend

Not a desk for people with a two monitor display, unless you are interested in taking out the right shelve. Overall I like it, but I am forced to use coasters.
