Go to Control Panel > Recovery > Create recovery drive.

Comes with anything else?

Making the vid right now
Search eBay for X230
left of the screen scroll/look til you see completed or sold listings
Check sold listings first, see the general sold price for em
Sometimes shipping isn't on there, so add $20 or so depending on your tax rate
Also sometimes the completed listings are not sold, so the seller will relist it
Might nab a cheaper buy it now X230 than an auction model because a lot of people search for auctions and jack up the price that is ending
if they search for low price, they'll end up with auctions that are barely starting and at low/below reserve price, so the cheap buy it nows are not shown up

I kick myself for not buying a T420s for under $240

>>45865128
Buy a used motherboard, thats how you upgrade, they are decent price, resell your motherboard afterward
just show photos of the bios, FRU and a big disclamer that its the mobo with the bios shown for reference before it was disassembled

Buy a junk X60 if you are afraid of messing up your precious X220, you should only need a precision philips screwdriver and some thermal paste

Is $100 for a T61 a good deal?
I'm mostly getting it for basic stuff, but will a T61 be able to run TF2 at least somewhat decently?

Pic related, it's the laptop on Craigslist.
>>
>>45865341
It is a good deal. However, the GMA 965 chip will not run TF2 well. I've tried it.
>>
>>45865467
Well, I'm hoping it has the Nvidia chip, or the higher resolution screen. I emailed the seller asking for more info.

I'm hoping I can talk the seller down to maybe $50 since it's quite an old laptop.
>>
>>45865513
You gotta be careful with the Nvidia T61 if you're getting one. As soon as you get it, apply a fresh bit of thermal paste and clean the fan/heatsink to keep it running as cool as possible.

That series of Nvidia chips was made like shit and develops micro-cracks when subject to temperature cycles, reballing/reflowing does not fix it because the problem isn't in the BGA solder balls. Once it gets bad enough it will stop working altogether. I had a Dell XPS M1530 with the affected Nvidia chip and it lasted 7 years of medium-heavy usage before biting the dust.

That model is neat as hell, but I'll probably won't ever get one unless I learn mandarin chinese, or will get raped by shipping fees.
That and the 550BJ would be neat japanese models
I got lucky on the 235, I think I paid $70 for it, one speaker doesnt work though, gets kinda hot in the bottom.
I am afraid to tear it open, the HMM is in japanese.

>>45865728
W510 has had some throttling issues and some overheating ones, but luckily there are some workarounds for that
>>
>>45865513
>>45865571
Those nVidia chips wear out over time even if you don't put them under much load. The heat/power cycles alone will crack the substrate. Do NOT buy a T61p. I had one before.

So for a poorfag studentin second world country, is the T410 a good choice or should i go for the T420?

Posted on an earlier thread but got no responses.
>>
>>45865841
Those temps seem normal, I'd not bother with thermal paste myself but some of the guys here replace it as soon as they get a new machine.

That price IMO isn't too bad, the dock adds value and is pretty nice if you plan on using it as a desktop replacement machine when at home.
>>
>>45865861
Go for a t420, it is not that much more expensive
>>
>>45865867
Yeah I'm using it as my secondary machine.
I got an i7 920 pc that I use mainly for some gaming.

I'm going to use this thinkpad for everything else, maybe even some light gaming (older games like GTA3, SA, Red Faction 1 and 2, etc).
>>
>>45865891
The only way i could get them is from Germany and they don't go for US prices there. A T420 with nvidia graphics goes for 310 euroshekels and the T410 costs 100 less.

T410 i can afford as is and for the T420 id have to make some arrangements.

>>
>>45871629
On (many) x2XXt models the edge detection can be off in the corners. This usually can't be fixed with calibration because it feels like the input detection has been 'tilted'. When you calibrate for the screen, the top left and bottom right corners will be dead centre but the bottom left and top right will be off by a little.

The only solution is to off calibrate it, so that all sides are equally off centre by a slight amount.

Happy new year, /thinkpadmasterrace/

I think this year is finally going to mark the end of ThinkPads being considered as viable budget computers. Microsoft is going to push hard for $100 tablets with Windows 8.1, and Google will go all out on Chromebooks with Chrome OS throughout this year. These devices will all be suitable for light computer use for hours, if not days on end (per charge), and won't cost more than $200-$250 a piece. I think, then, that desktops will be making a comeback as most people's main computers, and then the new cheap, lightweight tablets/laptops will be the portable computing devices -- not even considereing smartphones yet.

What do you think /g/?

With shit keyboards and screens, also even shittier performance than ULV Thinkpads.

Actually they aren't out yet, but they will be later this year. What we have now are $150 8-inch Windows tablets. And apart from the small panels, they actually have usable, high-res screens. I had one a couple months ago, it used a 1280x800 touchscreen with 10pt multitouch. I had to buy a $5 keyboard case to actually make it a "portable computer" because otherwise it was just an Internet browsing devices. But it worked. It had a Z3735 Atom chip in it, for what it's worth.

Right now, I'm posting from a Chromebook with a shitty Exynos processor. But I love it for the battery life. And the Intel-based counterparts perform way better overall.

I love my ThinkPad, but it's getting to a point where it's just impractical to keep investing in it anymore. I mean, the whole reason why I bought this Chromebook was because a new 6-cell battery cost more than the Chromebook AND cost more than the ThinkPad itself.

Are there any think pad or Lenovo stuff that can compare to sony's vaio duo 13? Looking to buy that one but I'd rather consider other newer brands first. I'm planning to do everything from digital drawing to running VMs to office work and in between with at least 6 hours battery life. Or maybe there's really nothing similar anywhere else?

As an X61s owner....

I'm gonna agree with this dude. Its pretty shit. although the one thing going for it is its keyboard oh god damn its the perfect size and it feels so fucking good.

Well, I don't actually take my Thinkpad out of my house very often and when I do, I always have easy access to a power outlet, so battery life isn't an issue. I've got 3-4 hours on my ancient 8-cell.

Batteries are pretty cheap here in Brazil. I could get a new 8-cell for 150 BRL (around 60 dollars). Plus new tech here is ridiculously expensive due taxes.

I got my T420 fully loaded with everything I needed for $250. 320GB HD, 4GB RAM, and I even got hooked up with the Nvidia version. The only think I needed to add myself was the webcam.

Gotta look in the right place, anon.

I bought this one, looks like the seller doesn't have any more, though.

>i5-2520M
>8GB of RAM
>NVIDIA graphics
>160GB HDD

I purchased a separate SSD as well. My only concern is going to be the screen resolution, although I'm willing to purchase the higher-res panel and replace if 1366x768 starts to bug me too much.

Buy a used, low charge cycle, genuine lenovo battery from eBay. There are some sellers that show charged/designed capacity specs. You can get one that's 80-90% for the same price as a chinkshit knock-off and you know it wont die in 6 months.

Or if you're an ecigfag, buy a cheap battery anyway and harvest the 18650 cells when the charge circuitry in the batt dies.

T500 has hybrid graphics.
I got ATI 3650 and Intel GMA on mine.
Both have WSXGA+ panels.
Except W500 can have that WUXGA you haven't seen before on 15.4"

I use mine as a desktop replacement in my room.
Have a dock and everything with it (T500).
The battery that came with it still holds a decent 4 hour charge (when I switch to the intel integrated graphics).

I almost bought a chromebook or tablet at $150.
But I get more use out of the thinkpad. More powerful machine. Plus I already have a LG G7 Tablet that gets the job done as an e-book reader and portable netflix machine.
