mpv for default
VLC for the extra options
if possible stay away from VLC
>>
I use mplayer + SMplayer.
If you have no idea how two programs could be used together, just get SMplayer
>>
Isn't Love Lab from Japan?
>>
Via a browser and with a subscription to either Netflix/Hulu/CrunchyRoll and supporting the industry.
>>
>>45848442
Kind of dumb not having any menus. It's obviously a nice option to have available if you like that sort of minimal look, but does it have anything over other applications?
>>
>>45848539
i'ts from china
>>
>>45848522
Doesn't smplayer depend on mplayer (1 or 2)? It's just a frontend, right?
>>
>>45848556
lol im just waiting for a crash. then maybe i would glance in their direction.
>>
>>45848480
Where do you stream from?

just use SMplayer then
>>45848587

How to install mpv?

Is it in Ubuntu's default repos?
>>
>>45848682
Probably. It is one of the more popular video players.
>>
>>45848438
Who is this meme girl?
>>
why do you all shit on VLC? I don't think i've had that artifacting happen in years, but everybody brings it up constantly like it's a massive issue.
>>
>>45848682
Yeah but the one in the repo probably doesn't have a gui
>>
>>45848792
I've never had it happen.
>>

Considered harmful
>>
>>45848438
just vanilla smplayer with vdpau/vaapi activated.
>>
You don't.

Now back to your containment board.
>>
>>45848792
I shit on VLC for multiple reasons:

1. It uses a shitty renderer - no CMS, no proper upscaling, low quality conversions, no interpolation, etc.; and despite this it manages to be inefficient

2. It has lacking, shitty or slow integration for modern features like Matroska ordered chapters, Hi10P, UHD or other technological advancements

3. It's a bloated piece of GUI shit that has no good CLI support. I don't WANT a user interface in my media player.

4. The developers are arrogant assholes who think their player is free of all defects and ignore bug reports.

Lol, did they seriously never managed to improve that piece of junk?
>>

Latest builds of smplayer also work with mpv.

Bruh, no one gives a shit about your media players file size.

Why is VLC superior? Simple: Global Hotkeys. Fuck MPC-HC. Fuck Winamp. Combined with VLC's easy playback speed adjustment, nothing is better for flying through lectures/tutorial videos and running movies/tv on a second monitor.
>>
>>45851832
Typical GUI babby can't even into global hotkeys without the program holding his hand.

Not that I understand why you'd even need that, sounds like a feature for broken window managers more than anything

Steps used to create/reproduce this result, in case you think I'm a lion

First image:
import vapoursynth as vs
core = vs.get_core()

clip = core.ffms2.Source(source='/home/nand/test.mkv')
clip = core.std.Trim(clip, first=3080, length=1)
clip = core.resize.Lanczos(clip, 1920*2, 1080*2)
clip.set_output()

$ vspipe --y4m lanczos.vpy lanczos.y4m
$ ffmpeg -i lanczos.y4m lanczos.png
$ convert lanczos.png -crop 1000x400+1000+500 lanczos-cropped.png
$ optipng lanczos-cropped.png

Second image:
import vapoursynth as vs
core = vs.get_core()

clip = core.ffms2.Source(source='/home/nand/test.mkv')
clip = core.std.Trim(clip, first=3080, length=1)
clip = core.nnedi3.nnedi3_rpow2(clip, 2, correct_shift=1, qual=2, width = 1920*2, height = 1080*2)
clip.set_output()

$ vspipe --y4m nnedi3.vpy nnedi3.y4m
$ ffmpeg -i nnedi3.y4m nnedi3.png
$ convert nnedi3.png -crop 1000x400+1000+500 nnedi3-cropped.png
$ optipng nnedi3-cropped.png
>>
>upscaling anything
why would you willingly wanna introduce made up garbage into the picture?
just watch at 1:1 resolution, unscaled, then you don't even need any faggy filters.
>>
>>45852799
>watching 720p and 1080p content on different monitors
No fuck you.
>>
>>45852799
because
>cinema for ants
>>
>>45852877
Why would you have to watch them on different monitors?
>>
>>45852970
So you watch 720p content unscaled with black borders surrounding it?
>>
>>45852984
I think that's what >>45852799 meant.

Really, the only way to *really* watch something unscaled is 1:1 on a high-DPI (retina) display where you can no longer see the individual pixels.

Everything else is basically just nearest neighbour upscaling.

If you have enough time to piss your life away on Chinese cartoons then you're 3/4 the way to becoming a Linux guru as it is.

How do you on HDMI connected monitor on linux
Shitty if you have to manually set it up
>>
>>45848539
>le not understanding le epik maymaye
>>
>>45852799
That's what I do. I have a 1280x756 screen, so all that get introduced are some small black bars.
>>
>>45854361
what do you do for 1080p content?
>>

>>45852799
Yeah, fuck all the useless filters and scaling and shit, it's all placebo

I watch all of my videos in their native format. That's the way they came on the disk, so that's the way the artist intended you to view them.

Anything else is just wrong
>>
>>45853060
Not actually sure what you're asking here. I game on my desktop all the time, no set up required whenever I switch to my HDMI cable TV. Most games default to 1080p when it's available.

running ubuntu with NVIDIA GTX 760 graphics.
>>
>>45854670
I don't download it.
