Fuck me when Seagate is going to be the only HDD vendor left on the planet come February, using an active sandpaper factory as the main production clean room for their China facilities.

tl;dr it anons, which sector is going to suddenly regress to most expensive prices in the past ten years?

It's set in WW2. To use the fictional magic fighter plane leg motor things, you have to not be wearing pants. So they don't wear pants.
And in doing so, they fly around shooting aliens.

Remember how when this happened years back prices got so bad that it actually made SSDs start to look affordable? Now that SSDs actually are almost reasonably priced now (500GB costs, what, $250 now?), anyone else think that this might be what finally causes SSDs to overtake HDDs as the dominant storage media? It'll be a cascading effect too. As SSD uptake increases, prices go down, causing the price difference to further exacerbate.

Just bought a 1 TB notebook HDD for $49.99 this morning:
promo code: ESCWHHD25 ends 01 Jan

and a 2 TB 3.5" HDD yesterday for $69.99:
promo code: ESCWHHE39 ends 31 Dec

I know these drives don't have the best reviews, but I have two of the 2.5" drives and three of the 3.5" drives, all in service for over a year and perfectly healthy. I just got these two with some Christmas cash because they have served so well. I use them for data storage, no OS or apps on them. Two of the 3.5" drives have been torrenting 24/7 for over a year, one of them for ~18 months. They've been solid for me. Do what you will that info.

I'd imagine it's also because Chinese labor is starting to get more expensive now that the country is modernizing. A lot of companies are their manufacturing out of China and back to the US because now the US is cheaper when shipping costs are taken into consideration, or they're moving their operations to even shittier countries. You know, like Thailand and Malaysia.

As I said, I just bought more because my others have been pretty awesome 'til now ... low temps, quiet, SMART numbers all like new. But, I respect these for what they are: mass data storage without constant OS & application activity.

Fuck Seagate. Never.

WD depends on model, but I'd only look at Black & Purple HDDs. Reds seem OKay for NAS. I won't ever have another Blue (three bad ones in three years) and the Greens scare me.

I still have 3 original Samsung 2 TB HDDs from before the 2011 floods, when they were still Korean and made in Korea. All of them are like new, but once Seagate took over the Samsung brand, the quality plummeted to shit-tier overnight ... exactly how much time it took Seagate to start production in China.

Seagate. Never.

These Toshibas are budget HDDs, but I've had top luck so far because I run them through surface testing and low level format when I get them before trusting them to service.

Alll my applications and operating systems are installed to SSDs. I do love my WD Black HDDs, though. Top tier luck with them, when I could afford them.

Have two HGST notebook HDDs I like, but haven't stressed them for long enough to say how reliable.

Toshiba drives are decent, better than Seagate at least. I've been lucky with Western Digital Black and Red drives but my favorite is still Hitachi as they're pretty rock solid.

>>45816235
No, they'll be inflated too. It happened last time Thailand flooded. If all their competitors' jack up their prices, Seagate will too because they can. Even if they decided to not be jews, they'd still mark up the prices up the overall supply of HDDs across all manufacturers would be low, causing demand for HDDs in general to rise, including Seagate drives.

Unless you have lots of drive bays to hold them I'd get the 4TB one. I've been using 4TB drives in both my PC and NAS for a while now, so far so good.
>>
>>45816321

If money is no issue, Western Digital Black is best all-around. Excellent HDD performance, top reliability, can be used to store data or run apps or mixed. They're 7200 rpm and use a much electricity as anything, run slightly warm because of that, but can be kept cool by non-retards without much effort.

Consider WD Purple for pure data storage, they tend around $85.

If you want to risk it on budget, look to HGST (which isn't much risk, they're pretty solid) with Toshiba >>45816028 being about comparable.

They key is that the user be not retarded and know how to clean, test & format and how to use a drive for it's designed purpose.

WD Green drives have a shit rep, for example, because 12 year old twinks buy 2 TB models cheap, then install Windows on them and their entire fucking STEAM account and play games on them every night for 6 or 8 hours. If that's what you want tyo do with an HDD, then go WD Black or SSD, not an eco drive designed for storage.

Strong Wind-Waves in Gulf of Thailand and Heavy Rain in South
No. 8 Time Issued December 28, 2014
During 28 December 2014 to 1 January 2015, the northeast monsoon across the South and the Gulf of Thailand will intensify. Scattered rain, as well as isolated heavy rain, will be likely over the lower South, especially in Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. People in the areas should beware of the severe condition due to influence of accumulative rainfall. The strong wind waves are likely 2-4 meters high. Residents along the coast should beware of inshore surge. All ships should proceed with caution and small boats from Nakhon Si Thammarat past south keep ashore. Another strong high pressure area extends to the upper Northeastern Thailand. Cooler weather with windy is forec...more"

Before reading your post I had no idea the difference between the whole green/black thing. They don't really specify well that it's only for storage.

In light of this knowledge, I will get either a black drive or SSD. How much better would an SSD be for performance? I play CSGO all day.
>>
I have a WD green 3tb and I've head they're shit. Of course eveything on that hdd is backed up but how soon should I expect this to fail?
>>
>>45816431
Why bother with blacks when blues only have marginally less power and cost about $30 less? Is that $30 worth three years warranty and a very slight performance increase?
>>
>>45817243
you can not compare a hdd to even cheep ssds as far as performance is concerned.

if you want fast go ssd. if you want lots of room for not retarded amounts of money and speed is not a big factor go hdd.

You know how it works here: demand 'demand' for for a good or service, and then raise the price. I still don't understand why a 2 TB WD Black is $200. You'd seriously be better off buying 2x2 TB Seagate drives and putting them in RAID for the same price.
>>
>>45817923
that's racist
>>
>>45818023
It's still $200 because lel NZ.
The same reason why 980's are still almost a grand.
I hate to be _that_ guy, but after having suffered the wrath of the 7200.11 problem, I wont be buying seagate again unless I have no option. HDD solely for storage, warranty length is just a bonus. SSD's for everything else.

Btw, if you're ever after a PSU, go to techworld. Legit guy, seriously undercuts everyone else in that department.
>>
Are 4TB discs ready for the prime time? I'm looking at WD Greens.

I'll buy 4 and RAID5 them so reliability is not much of an issue. I've wanted to do that for a while and might as well do it now.

I bought a 4TB Hitachi last year, they're pretty reliable according to Backblaze. They are using a shitload of HDDs and often report on the reliability of the different brands and models they use.

Fuck

/g/ should I buy that WD Red 4TB now? Because I actually start to need it and I dont need it to become any more expensive

keep in mind that at that size and speed, replacing a drive means putting at least around 10 solid hours of full load on the other drives to resilver a new drive

970s are still well over $500; it's fucking stupid. I feel sad just looking at low US prices, even after they've been converted to NZD.

>the wrath of the 7200.11 problem
That's why you can chuck them in RAID 1 for the same price as a 2 TB WD Black. Having mirrors is crucial for the old HDD failure phobia.

>SSD's for everything else
I walked into PB Tech the other day, and they had a Crucial MX100 512 GB going for slightly under $300. SSDs are for storage size stupidly expensive, and not worth the performance boost for the price. You'd be better off buying a 1 TB WD Blue.

its just fucking retarded that we constantly have to deal with this bullshit, 2 floods in the span of what? 5 Years? 4 years? Thats a flood or a fuckup almost every 2 years. You would think that by now they would try to combat it a bit at least.

other nations treat their industrial companies as national treasures to be protected, tactical economic engines they are. I dont see silicone valley flooding or getting wrecked once every couple of years.

Implying you have the 1.6GB ones, and not the 700MB unable to watch versions.

WD

Red = NAS (Stable but not very fast)
Black = Performance + avg. Stability
Green = avg. Preformance + avg, Stabillity

And then there is shit like Purple which is Really Stable but has shit random IO or something

Supply and Demand.

Currently the supply/demand is stable. If supply lowers and demand remains the same, the prices go up. 25% reduction in HDD increases the prices of HDD.
