I'm a usual /g/ent Lunix Gentoo hacker but I know nothing about music.

Is it possible for me to learn to make EDM or am I too autistic? If it is, where should I start?

>making music on Linux

Kek, good luck with that. Pretty much all of the good DAWs are exclusive to Windows and OS X.
>>
>>45813456
Seems strange though, since only Linux has a low latency colonel available.

>>45813502
Not as low-latency as this colonel.

there are so many functions a solid audio processor needs

sadly there is no proprietary market

Anyone used Bitwig? Anyone gotten the Linux version to use Windows VSTs?

Download a lot of presets/samples
Learn the basics of melody/harmony
Add shit progressively and call it progressive
Occasionally, remove everything and start again

Been pretty pleased with Ardour so far although I haven't done a full project on it yet. I don't really need much in a DAW besides basic plugins and features for handling that.
Bitwig looks nice although it seems more geared for electronic.

Why must every one call techno edm,
>>
>>45814962
EDM == electronically digitized music
>>
I do electronic rock
does that count?

I use primarily Ableton, but have been recently switching to BitWig. What do you guys think?

I think BitWig's FX and mixer sounds infinitely better than ableton's, and it handles recording better than ableton methinks.

PEBKAC.
>>
>>45814991
You should try Amplitube if you're using a guitar. It can mimic an amazing variety of amps and pedals
>>
>>45814977
>>45815001
soooo how is that different from techno?
>>
>>45815026
techno is one type of edm

techno is not the same as trance, dubstep or dnb
>>
>>45815122
if anything I would think edm is a type of techno not the other way around
>>
>>45812343
How do I Skrillex?
>>
>>45815015
Everything I run under ableton sounds muddy to me. The reverbs, delays, compressors, what have you all sound lifeless. Maybe you're right, maybe it is just me, but I'm able to get more satisfying results under BitWig in a shorter time.
>>
>>45815016
I already use it, but yeah. Amplitube (and other software amp sims) tend to work well with the right EQing afterward.
>>
>>45814991
>>45815015
Is it just me or is Ableton's send/return system just not strong enough?
I have to push the send up to the maximum to get a medium amount of reverb, whereas in other DAWs I can push the send three-quarters and get it drowning in reverb already.
>>
>>45814895
See
>>45814734
>>
>>45815168
You would be wrong. Most people do not consider "techno" to be in the same category as "EDM," which is what most people hear on the radio and is generally the "mainstream" form of electronic music - top 40s, etc.

Techno is a specific subgenre with specific sound, and very few people would mistake techno producers for trance producers (or other genres).

That being said, genres are dumb classifications.

>>

>>
>>45815781

Any device with a MIDI Thru will allow you to attach another device to it so you can daisy chain (I'd limit it to four in a chain) - the Thru is a mirror of the input.

>>45815826
alright you got me a little confused there, could you elaborate? This is how I pictured setting it up
>>
>>45815865
I'm definitely not saying it has nothing to do with ideas or composition, that's the exact opposite of what I believe. I didn't even mention that in my post. All I'm saying is that music creation (on a larger compositional scale especially) has gotten way more accessible in the past <10 years. You have guys grinding out song after song after song and are making mediocre to good stuff.

>so many talented artists that have no listeners for no particular reason and tons of shit that is popular for no reason

It almost feels like a circle of friends, or just people who show a particular persons work to their friends and it just goes around. live shows, fucking meme status shit. I dunno how you get your shit out there, but those who do it's almost ridiculous cus I feel like that shit sucks a lot of the time. Not even people who are like 'uber famous~'
but people who have a decent following and get downloads/plays
>>
>>45815908

MIDI Out is for MIDI information created by the device - like MIDI controllers, MIDI Thru is used to daisy chain devices and is a mirror of all of the information that appears at the MIDI input.
>>
>>45815871
what creates this list?

No worries

I did a modified version of your drawing to illustrate a basic setup
>>
>>45816124
Ok, i'm getting it now. I've spent years just running auxiliary cables from the headphones jack on my keyboard to my computers mic jack, so this is obviously a necessary upgrade
>>
>>45816152

Remember also that MIDI is just control information - instructions to tell a device to do something - so no audio passes along the cables.

Apologies if you already know this but sometimes people get MIDI interfaces and audio interfaces mixed up. A lot of interfaces (like the UR22) have both audio and MIDI so it keeps things tidy if you're moving your kit from place to place often.
