because plan9 is a remnant of the past when the network could even come close to keeping up with CPU speeds. nothing it was designed for is relevant hardware-wise any more

Because for anyone who uses computers for more than a Facebook machine, isn't a programmer or hobbyist Linux and UNIX, as well as most OSs based on them aside from OSX are simply inadequate. Open-source imitations of closed programs for everything except for the most baseline shit like email clients and text editors are just that, imitations. Shadows of their progenitors.

I can respect Linux and UNIX, but they are useless for me. Gave it a chance, couldn't do what I do (heavy graphic design, gaming) on Windows.

what if you could seamlessly continue your work on any machine you have access to because you actually are on the machine you started the work on? no silly remote desktop, just plain godly greatness. that's plan9. sadly you're not using it, your loss.
>>
>>45811949
>silly remote desktop

VNC in all it's various implementations is used every day by everyone from your run of the mill IT guys to the some of the smartest people in the world.

People who know what they're doing tend to carry VNC over SSH, but that's a different story.

I don't frequent this site.. I just thought I'd check it out.. and man, what a shithole it is. The people here are almost exclusively adolescent aged males.. illiterate, video game addict, adolescent males. They aren't kernel developers. Most of them don't even have basis 101 level knowledge on topics like OSs, networking, computing, etc.. Just a 24-7 consumerism circle jerk.

>which brand name do I attach to my sense of self worth and start making shitposts about my confirmation bias
>I use x, I am important, therefore x is the best y.
>>
>>45811949

I have exactly one machine (my desktop) I do real work on. Everything else has its own purpose and there would be little to no pointless overlap. I'm not using Illustrator on my phone or on my travel laptop. "Letting all your devices talk together" aside from very low-level interfaces like email, is consumerist bullshit that's meant for people who do nothing but play shitty little browser games, mobile-app tie-ins to those game and Facebook. It's not relevant to me, at all.

>but what if you forget X to take with you

I double-check myself and actually use my brain to make sure I remember. That's another thing all this crap does is allow you to be a moron. Anything so you don't have to think.

Tell me.. who owns bell labs?

>AT&T
>really? still? hm.. (it's obscured a little, but..)

And what has AT&T done in the past?

>changed licensing on things due to shekel-chasing

Now, in the real world, people do sometimes stop being jackasses, changes of management occur, etc, but how do we know it's not going to happen again? Tell us what the situation is with that. Also in the real world, people reminiscent of comic book villains also actually exist.

>>45811908
And this. It is a toy OS right now.
>>
>>45812919

They invented VNC then open sourced it.
>>
>>45812950
>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_Network_Computing

That's not what AT&T did according to this.. they bought it and closed it down.. and then the developers open sourced it..

>The Olivetti & Oracle Research Lab (ORL[3]) at Cambridge in the UK developed VNC at a time when Olivetti and Oracle Corporation owned the lab. In 1999 AT&T acquired the lab, and in 2002 closed down the lab's research efforts.

Also.. this is the sort of thing rootkits are made of. I bet the NSA absolutely LOVES this..
>>
>>45813131

Meh, you're probably right.
>>
>>45812919
1) AT&T doesn't own Bell Labs, Alcatel-Lucent does.

2) You can't change licenses in the way you're describing. Even if Lucent decided to continue working on Plan9 with a closed source license the versions they relased under GPL would still be GPL. Similar to how when openBSD started making openSSH they used the last open sourced version of SSH as their base.

I don't think that the lack of interest by the world at large is due to a lack of comfortable, familiar applications. I think it's got more to do with a lack of understanding of why Plan 9 is (*really!*) interesting and a shortage of people who find that utterly compelling. People have given various excuses in the past (lack of gcc or X11, cost, licence terms) but if you're really enthused, none of that matters. Unix was a hit because it filled a niche, and what passes for Unix these days is still filling that niche, and for a lot of peple that's good enough. Those of us who can't imagine going back to living on what passes for Unix are a definite minority.

That's not what I'm talking about.
I'm talking about the stupid distinction between a language and a system.

If you've used a truly dynamic system for any extent, you come to realize how much of a burden it is to have most of your system functionality locked away and essentially inaccessable at the user level, except on the terms of some monolithic program via flags, or, if you're a programmer, by making more monolithic blocks, or using some shitty FFI in another second-class, but less terrible programming language.

'cos being an idealistic on a subject is easy when you don't follow through and actually do anything

Are your parents brother and sister? I use plan 9 on metal very often because I think it's good. I didn't do anything that I would define "substantial " with Linux either, does this make Linux worthless?

To dumb it down, plan 9 makes shit simple, I never mentioned ideals
