HD800 is worse in every possible way.

Expert analysis by Sonove proves this. HD650 is simply a superior higher fidelity solution.

>b-but muh soundstage

Placebo and expectation bias. HD800's soundstage is pretty normal for an open headphone.
>>
>>45754739
The only way the 650 could be said to be better is with it's frequency response. Which is something you could easily change with EQ. In the case of the 650 you'd give it a bit of a treble boost and with the 800 a bit of a treble cut. Aside from that the 800 is the better designed headphone.

there isn't one. but they're also ~$50 90% of the time. and for that price you can get a 668b or a 681evo, both of which sound considerably better. though I still think the porapro would be worth it for the unique form factor. sennheiser PX series are as good as the portapro but they're also more expensive.

What's the deal with the K7XX anyway? I've been seeing a shitload of complaints about bass rattle, tested mine on some frequencies at high volume and didn't detect any rattle, I just get lucky or are those complaints exaggerated?

I've been happy enough with what I got as a replacement for my (broken) Senn 595s but worrying if they are really having such bad QC issues with them.
>>
>>45758002
Probably just lucky. That and the number of working units always far outweighs the non working ones.
>>
>>45758060
Yeah, I imagine most of the people with good units are just staying quiet anyway, but still discouraging to see so many with problems. Makes me wonder if mine is going to crap out down the line or has some other problem I haven't noticed yet or something.

opinions on DT770 (250 ohm)? I have used 650s for the past two years and loved them, how do the beyerdynamics stack up? I bought them mainly for plane and train trips, so I'll have to shorten the cable when I get them.

Just replaced the foam driver cover on my HD 600s with thin nylon gauze cause it hit against my ear. Now in addition to being more comfy and looking cooler (see-through black nylon), I think I improved the bass response. More punchy and present, I recommend it. If you don't like it or think it's placebo, just put the foam back.

The bass was the only (minor) thing I had against these, now I never want to take these off.

m40x and xpt100 are more neutral, but not outright better. I prefer the bass on the v6 and I think it's more detailed overall. takstar pro80 is well reviewed but I've never tried it. There is also the creative aurvana live, which they just updated to the "2" version.

Any word on Sennheiser HD335S?

Does sennheiser make ripoffs? I know with sony they make decent ones and then they make shit ones meant for the beats crowd...

I can get them for 50 bucks, yes I know thats a good deal.... I have a pair of sony mdr-v6's, would these be as good or better in the sound quality? Well it's too late now. At the time the 650s weren't as super-popular and I'd been constantly hearing about how incredibly neutral and accurate they are.

For the most part though, it seems right. I haven't actually heard the 650s yet. I'd like to, to hear the warm musical sound I hear associated with it that everyone willingly gives up neutrality for. Although I also hear that they're supposed to sound very similar, so I don't think I'd be too distraught if I ended up loving them.

Owner of the portapros here, and having used a good amount of other earbuds/headphones I have to say they're kind of over-hyped. Don't get me wrong, they're not bad for the price, but the earbuds that come with the Clip+ are almost as good, just bright where the portapros are warm, and you get a free media player to boot.

Speaking of packaged deals, I learned by coincidence that the earphones that come with the galaxy S5 are exceptionally good, almost on par with inexpensive IEMs. The microphonics from the cable are pretty bad though, so not really suited for running. They do isolate well, and look moderately fashionable (I guess).

That's a big negative. Even tough they have metal nozzles compared to Shure's plastic. Any other IEMs with removable cable worth considering. /g/'s guide is quite narrow.

Current headphones are aiaiai tma-1 studios. They sound a bit unfocused and not very good for much outside electronica/ambient. Only have a Nuforce MMP for an amp and it seems more of an issue of powering them than the headphones themselves. Should I go for a magni/modi combo for around $200? Or just go for another pair of headphones right now and worry about camping them later?

I just bought some over-ear Bose SoundTrues for $150. Come at me.

Actually they sound nearly identical to my Sennheiser HD218s, which are like $40 now. Maybe these sound just slightly better, but not an extra $110 better.

Reason I bought them though was to wear them to bed. They're comfortable enough and light enough for that, so I'm not returning them. I was wearing my M50x's to bed and that was a real skullfucker. I ended up selling those on eBay.

Actually I might have a problem. I find myself buying random headphones just to satisfy my curiosity. My AD900s are still king. I've had several Senns and a couple ATs, all mostly mid-low tier (<$200). Right now I have my eye on DT880s.

>>
>>45767114
im planning on getting a pair of passive speakers, whats the difference? (reciever vs amp/dac)
>>
>>45767144
Amps for headphones and speakers are necessarily different, since the loads they need to handle are very different. A receiver generally does have a DAC in it, but a dedicated DAC tends to be the better solution. Of course that depends on how well the DAC is designed, the quality of parts used, etc.

Open is generally said to be better for gaming and overall quality, 770 is closed, so be aware of that. 558 is very popular and can (supposedly) be modded to sound like the more expensive 598, google "foam mod 558". I own neither so I can't say anything about comfort with glasses, but I do own the DT880 Premium which are very comfortable with glasses. 770 seem to share the shape, so maybe they are good, but I can't make any guarantees. I think the 770s clamp a bit harder, so that might be a problem with glasses.

>>
>>45767283
Try out the vali if you just want a taste of tube amps. Or go with a woo audio or something later.

I personally think a solid state amp is always going to be better than a tube amp when it comes to powering headphones. Tubes make sense on a guitar, not for reproducing audio transparently and cleanly.
>>
>>45769026
There are transparent tube amps, and colored solid state amps. Just saiyan. The overall design > whether it's tube or SS in terms of an amps sound.
>>
>>45769045
Yeah true. I also dont like the idea of tubes going bad and changing sound slowly over time and needing to replace them

Assuming they're not abused a tube should last a very long time. There are 20+ year old T1's floating around that work just fine. At that point if you were to change the tubes you might as well replace the electrolytic caps too.

build quality is just as good as anything else in that price range, infact I would say it's better than most because of the simple akg design (no pivoting joints, all the stress is on two metal bands). the evo has great pads, it even comes with pleather and velour. the 668b does have shitty pads but they're bearable considering they don't touch your ears or exert much pressure. you can use the k240 velour pads on them or do a sock mod if you can't afford the extra $10.
