I have a "god tier" Elitebook 8570p and I wouldn't put it in that category, really. It has a battery life like what you'd expect from a NiMH-powered floodlight, it's heavy and cumbersome as fuck, the keys have no backlight (but there's a stupid flip-out light that does fuck all to light the keys next to the webcam for some reason) and there's a loose contact somewhere in the battery connector so when it's not running on AC power, shaking or abruptly moving the laptop can cause it to just turn off.
Oh yeah, and leaving it on battery until it dies makes it take a few hours to a day to detect the battery and start charging it again when you turn it on again - I'm guessing the deep discharge prevention thing is either broken or just doesn't work with linux somehow.

On the other hand, it's a very solid metal construction and has very nicely accessible and upgradeable components so that's nice. Still, not what I'd call god tier.

Because lots of companies make rugged notebooks. Its odd OP just picks out the most recognizable rugged notebook brand but mentions no other brands. Toughbooks were the first in the rugged notebook market, they're well built, but they usually lag in hardware and are overpriced compared with getac or itronix. Dell rugged is also comparable to toughbooks.

OP only putting toughbooks is a clear sign he knows nothing about the rugged laptop market, or the laptop market in general.

Outside a few lenovo t/x series and the one w series with second screen, lenovo is absolute garbage. Dell and HP? Overpriced shit. A "rice tier" clevo is better build than your typical Elitebook or Precision.

And if anything macbooks are ultimate rice tier, they fit the definition of rice, only difference is they're mainstream.

I've had a thinkpad R500 for nearly 5 and a half years now.
It's slow, is starting to physically fall apart and worst of all it overheats like a motherfucker.
I'm talking 100+ C for the motherboard sensor and 90+ C for the CPU sensor.
Apparently it can sort of take it though, since it's been running that hot for years and it still works.

Anyway, I do really need a replacement.

Might as well buy a luggable and be done with it.

Even more power.
>>
>>45688712

None of the ones in OP's shitty list are good for gaming. While shopping check this list:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Comparison-of-Laptop-Graphics-Cards.130.0.html
None of those laptops OP picks are going to support tier 1 GPUs, they don't have to cooling capacity.

For gaming go clevo / sager barebones for desktop replacement. Contrary to OP's shit list, clevo is the opposite of rice with no branding at all. Or a prebuilt MSI are usually good value, but unfortunately lots of rice.

Or optimally go desktop + netbook combo. Laptops are unfortunately focused on portability and thinness these days, not power.

Even if your rich as fuck and buy a maxed out elitebook or precision, its going to have a class 2 professional card that has no real performance.

Clevo or similar will beat business class workstations in performance at more than 50% of the price. So if gaming if your goal, don't even bother with any business class laptop, those are intended for enterprise / professional use like >>45688825 mentioned with any Dell / HP business product. A crap Acer that's 5 years old and has never been cleaned has much better cooling. The Dell piece of shit hits 85C+ at 50% CPU load with idle GPU. 100% load without throttling is completely and entirely out of the question and high load on CPU and GPU leads to immediate overheating and throttling. Also the colors on the screen are shit and despite the 1920x1080 resolution at 15" there are are some weird ass lines that are clearly visible. These aren't isolated issues, this is the laptop I have at work and lots of my coworkers have them. $2000+ nearly top spec machines with very nice i7s that cannot be used properly because they overheat immediately.

tl;dr: Dell E6000 are overheating pieces of shit, do not buy

That's like saying all T series ThinkPads are shit because the T43 overheats.

Can someone tell me why the fuck I am supposed to accept a 1366x768 display in 2014? Please, for the love of god, recommend me a decent laptop with at least 1600x900 (decent 1080p preferred), an i3 or i5 CPU, 4GB of RAM, a decent keyboard, decent build quality and a shitty HDD (that I'm going to replace with an SSD anyway). No OS is also preferred, I swear to god this doesn't exist for 500€.

Here's my specs and my laptop is perfect and fast for what I use it for (Web surfing / word processing / emulating all when out of town generally). It was 430$ from my uni bookstore. Only upgrade I made was adding a SSD.

Dell N5040
Intel i3 390M
4GB Ram
Windows 7
60 gb ssd

Legit twice as fast as my gf's 3 year old macbook pro. Ive owned this for 2 years. You mad?

Acceptable, but why do I have to go back to a laptop with a 4 or 5 year old CPU in order to get an "acceptable" display? What the fuck happened?
>>

Tablets.
>>
>>45691096
>>45691163
How about you quit being a gigantic retard, most laptops over 12" have MULTIPLE options of screen resolutions.

T520's in particularly come in 1366x768, 1600x900, and 1920x1080.
>>
>>45691236
Literally the only thing with an acceptable screen in my pricerange would be the Flex 2-15, with a modern i3 ULV CPU, 4GB of RAM and a FHD IPS screen. But apparently the keyboard is complete shite and in order to swap the HDD you have to void your warranty and unscrew 19(!) screws. What the actual fuck?
>>
>>45688297
What would you say is a better rugged laptop than Toughbook? I have a T420 for now but always planned to get a toughbook when I could afford it
>>
>>45691226
Well, if you want god-tier for less than 500, that's the way its gotta be. Granted, I do not do any rendering and stuff, just a lot of virtualization, but my old CPU is not what is the bottleneck in my system. IMHO any i7 W series Thinkpad for less than 500 Euro is one hell of a good machine.
>>
>>45687622
Why's Acer at the bottom?
>>
>>45691249
200+€ markup on the higher res models, all of them come bundled with Windows 8 and a dedicated GPU that I don't need. This is bullshit, I shouldn't have to sacrifice an acceptable screen for a 500€ machine.
>>45691282
I just realized that thing has a quadro GPU, so I'm paying for something that I really don't need.
4GB of RAM, crappy HDD or even better no HDD, decent screen, good keyboard, easy to open and do maintenance with a modern i3 or i5 CPU. it can't be that hard to get something like this.
>>
>>45691318
for failure rate: it's about 15% in the first year.
>>
>apparently I own a god tier laptop

I am truly /g/ now
>>
>have lenovo r61
>not masterrace
R61s had the same hardware as t series back then. Have 900p screen and quadro nvs and t8100 c2d
>>
>>45691339
>4GB of RAM, crappy HDD or even better no HDD, decent screen, good keyboard, easy to open and do maintenance with a modern i3 or i5 CPU
Then keep on lurking on Ebay.de until one comes up with the right screen specs. They are there all the time. I'm a Swedefag and I get amazing prices on sites like Blocket.se now and then. My current T520 with small SSD and hi-res was only about 400 euro, six months ago And it was in mint condition.

T420 with a pretty good i5, 500GB HDD, Intel 3000 integrated graphics, 4GB RAM.

I got it refurbished for $460. My question is, did I pay too much for it?
>>
>>45691521
My problem with yeelong is the screen is too small.
>>
>>45691349
Well the reason I ask is because I have an Acer laptop that's been having problems before year 1
And I always blamed myself for being a poor owner
>>
>>45691524
It's got an i7 1tb hdd 16g of ddr3 ram and a gtx760m with 4g of ram on it the only thing is the screen is a mat 1080p but the viewing angles are shit
>>
Okay, fuck Lenovo. Every. Single. Model. has some ridiculous flaws in my pricerange. What other manufacturers should I look into in the 500€ price range?
>>
>>45691991
dell or hp consumer shit and don't expect build quality at that price.
>>
>>45692061
Because they're all being bundled with shit that I don't need. I don't want a dedicated GPU, I don't even want a harddrive and I don't need the shitty windows 7 license either, scrap all those and I could have a good laptop for 500 bucks. Why does nobody offer this? Shopping for a fucking laptop has been the most frustrating experience I've had in the last 3 years.
>>
>>45692174
Yeah because what would normal people need with a harddrive, windows 7, or a GPU. Shame on those companies.
>>
Because I have a beast of a desktop already, I only need a laptop for simple stuff like schoolwork or multimedia.

>Asus

I ain't even mad, touchscreen laptop for 220 usd. Who would?
>>
>>45692174
Some manufacturers sell laptops with ubuntu preinstalled and no windows license. as far as buying a computer with no HDD, i doubt you'll find any.
>>
>>45692213
The iGPU is more than enough for many people (if not most), windows can be bought seperately or you could just install whatever Linux distro you prefer (many laptops actually come without an OS), the HDD thing I understand, but the fact that high res screens are bundled with larger capacity drives, an OS that I don't want and a crappy GPU that I don't need is bullshit.
>>45692264
Yes, but for the higher-end models they always bundle in Windows for some inexplicable reason and that's just bullshit.
>>
>>45692369
I'm pretty sure lots of business class laptops are sold without windows.
>>
>>45692465
you can order your own image but I don't think anybody has ubuntu or something as a default option
>>
>>45692465
Yes, but as soon as you step up to the version with the better screen some windows license is bundled in. If you can find me a thinkpad edge E540 (or something comparable) with the fullHD screen without windows or a dedicated GPU then please go ahead, it doesn't fucking exist.
