Hey /g/
Decided to ditch Windows for Linux, since it's all you guys talk about.
I decided to get Ubuntu, seeing that it's one of, if not the easiest to use.
So, now that I have this shit installed, wat do?
I still need a DE, will GNOME be good enough?
Thanks

Thanks for bump <3
Glad to know I'm not in this alone.

Unity is fine, unless you mean that for some reason you did a minimal install. Before you worry about ricing you should learn unix commands. This is a good book: http://linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php
>>
>>45681836
First, you should re-install Windows. Next, you must never fuck up your computer with a Trojan disguised as an OS.

Thanks for the help :)
>>45681885
First you should end yourself

Unity isn't all that bad, my only complaint is that the apps menu thing is pretty laggy on older devices. Other than that it's probably the best start. From there you can download other WMs and change things and play with a working system rather than just piecing things together.

Also I should say that you only need to read the first third or so of that book (before it starts talking about vi). The rest is more like a reference.
>>
>>45681905
Why? Because I know a virus when I see one?

I think OP should end himself

Gnome 3 is good yes. Xubuntu is good. umm cinnamon is aight or mate. I started using gnome 3 on arch recently and been enjoying it. of course you can't have a complete shit pc to run it well. but i'm guessing yours is alright.

GNOME is shit on Ubuntu.
Old version.
Use XFCE.

What do you guys think of the material design themes?

Which one is best?
>>
>>45682229
I think they're still in Alpha.
So, none of them are best.

Should I be installing every update every few days?

It seems to give me more updates than my Mac.

>Should I be installing every update every few days?
Yeah, the updates are important.
The good news is that only kernel and driver updates require a restart.

Yeah, I noticed that. My TV connected to my computer runs Ubuntu. Everything is brilliant with it.

I'm also a recent Ubuntu user. Unity is okay but I kind of like XFCE more, only that it is ugly and needs an update ASAP.
>>
>>45682509
Also GNOME is pretty decent at least what I've been using in university but for some retarded reason there is no thumbnailing in the file chooser which is a pain in the ass.

Literally just installed Ubuntu 14.10 on an extra 80Gb HDD i had laying around.
