I'd have to say there's a high likelyhood that IBM made the keyboard for this machine in their Scotland factory as Tadpole was based in Cambridge.

Looks just like other ThinkPad keyboards of the era.

Hi guys,

How much would you pay for a X201 or X220 in the UK?

Also, why is the X201s so rare compared to the X200s?
>>
>>45666546
Niche market, and rare machines.

Plus they probably cost around that when they were new, and they've stopped making UNIX + RISC laptops (real UNIX, not OSX)

Maybe if you get into escort service, you can finance your ThinkPad needs

I've seen bongs pay for 1.5 to 2x amount.

X201 = 100-150 sterlings
X220 = ~200 sterlings

A kitchen computer is a computer that's used to look up recipes and listen to music while cooking.

So for a Thinkpad, that would mean adding an aftermarket speaker? Glare-free recipe reading is a plus, but tinny sound is not.

>>
>>45668608
Do you own a thinkpad? This is gonna be my first and i'm sort of lost. I've been looking at the battery slice that works with the x220 to get longer hours with it but i'm unsure because of the price difference.
>>
>>45668212
Because the screen on my x61t is fine.
>>
>>45668671
I had a T420 and now have an X220t.

The X220 with the 9-cell battery should get about 10 hours on its own if the battery is in good condition.

I considered getting a slice, but I haven't needed the extra battery life from my 6-cell battery.

X220 can also take 16GB RAM as opposed to 8GB in the X201, and it can take mSATA SSD's plus the 2.5" drive.

What do you mean?

You said
>I hate the multi-touch screen
I assumed that meant it had something to do with the multi-touch functions, if that's not it, then what?

And what about the X61t's screen makes it better?
>>
>>45668803
I've come to the conclusion that the x220 thinkpad is the one for me. has a displayport out, slice battery, mSATA SSD compatible, can use 16GB RAM and in some cases has a IPS screen. Thanks for the help and are you happy with yours?
>>
>>45668820
The multi touch screen is different than just the normal digitizer screen. I didn't expect the screen quality to be worse. Plus there is no lid latch. The fuck where they thinking.
>>
>>45668540
X220 is clearly the winner. X201 is just good for the price.
>>
>>45668858
Isn't the X61 TN though and lower PPI and full-matte? While the X220t is IPS, slightly higher PPI and semi-matte?

What do you mean better? You're talking about colors and brightness, right?
>>
>>45668898
No. The x61t is IPS. So is the x220t. The multi touch ability adds a few layers of plastic which distorts pictures and makes the screen easy to scratch with the pen.

Anyone have experience with getting warranty work done on a secondhand Thinkpad? I'm the anon from >>45659984 in the old thread with problems resuming from suspend. My X220 is still in warranty until the 23rd of this month so I figured I might as well put in for warranty service and see what I get. I'm just asking because the info IBM asked for on warranty service seemed really focused on companies and the text fields weren't big enough for some of the info.
>>
>>45668803

>>

>>
>>45669186
I just gave you the way to fix it.

Really, you can get used to anything, just don't brush the trackpad and you'll be OK. You might be able to adjust the click sensitivity in settings, I'm not sure because I am not much of a trackpad person.

I go for X, almost entirely due to size. With a T series you get a bigger screen and possibly dedicated graphics. Depending on which generation they are there can be differences in processors (low voltage vs normal) and how much RAM you can put in.

Relative to the X it is. When I was in college as a freshman they gave us T-series, and it was kind of a pain to carry to classes (more due to its footprint than its weight though). Then Junior year everyone in my major was given X-series tablets which were a lot more convenient

Is $200 a good price for a X200 with a docking station with DVD drive, a charger, Win 7 with disk, and a 500gb HDD?

I'll probably put a Linux distro on it as I'd like to learn how to use it, but I still would need to hold onto Windows for work.
>>
>>45669729
In the real world, we have to carry more than just a computer. Things to carry include a mouse, charger, hard drive, papers, stationery, and other things like a music player. It might be okay if we were only carrying a T thinkpad but real life is different.
>>
>>45669793
no, you can bid on a x220 for $200ish.

That's acceptable for a very clean X200 with those extras. Run Win7 then host Linux in a Virtuabox VM and you can use both OS at the same time.

I have to say, the X200T with multitouch display had a 'loose' screen.
it was reminicent (sp?) of those plastic covers you see on keyboards at supermarkets.

the multitouch was an odd display of the X200T, I liked the regular X200 more.

>>45666766
as far as I knew, 800 series were expensive compared to other units, starting at 6K supposidly and the options can end you at 10K US during the 90's.

>>45669852
Let me fly you out to California and allow me to hollow out your asshole with my dick. No homo.
>>
>>45669908
Weight and space together is a balancing act. We use an external hard drive because it's not always convenient to setup a network to transfer big files. A mouse is far more precise than the trackpoint and trackpad. Come back to me when you can beat my mouse in a fast twitch fps with your trackpoint.

Yes I can do all those things but it's not worth the price for a lot of us. If we need computing power and a big screen, there is no substituting a real workstation. X Thinkpads are portable terminal machines.

The point isn't about games, the point is about the speed/precision/effort balance. The trackpoint is convenient but also objectively slower.

>>45670033
The trackpoint is fast and accurate and doesn't require effort. Just use it and you get used to it and come to appreciate it more than the trackpad or a mouse.

All you need is your finger tip. I could show you how easy it is. Has anyone used your prostate as a trackpoint before?

This. In fact it's kind of silly that a lot of the regular ones with IPS go for more than the tablet versions if they're properly labeled. I got the tablet version just because I knew they all came with IPS and even at 720p, it's pretty nice.

Just got a 128gb msata for $50 too to stick inside for better speed and so on, then keep the regular HDD for storage. Don't think I've seen too many people do that with theirs but it's a nice feature to have.

Also swapped the keyboards on my w510 and x220t because the one on the w510 was in mint shape and it spends most of its time in a dock anyway.

With the upgraded screen and all mind you. The only cosmetic defect was a small crack in the plastic covering the exhaust at the back.

How did I do?

The battery life to me seems a bit shocking (an hour and a half or so when it's being used). Could that be the battery itself being worn down or are they known for having pretty weak battery life anyway?
>>
>>45672671
What's that in real money?
>>
>>45672689
About $310
>>
>>45668540
X201 has better aspect ratio and fucking amazing resolution screen. I wish we could have higher than shitty 1366*768 on the rest of them.

However, X220 has much more recent hardware, better battery life, a nicer-looking screen if you get IPS, and is better built, and SATA III.

It depends on what you are going to use it for. I'm currently using an X200 and it suits me just fine for web browsing, and programming, watching movies.

However, if you do anything CPU-intensive or graphically-intensive like Photoshop then I would step up to the X220. You might want a nicer looking screen for your movies too (IPS vs TN). Make sure you get an SSD whichever one you go for.
>>
>>45672671
Oh and as an aside to that.

I can't seem to get what I assume to be the middle mouse button to work for shit. I've tried various things I've found online to try and get it to work but it just isn't having any of it.

>>

>>
>>45673046
I just got mine today, and i've been using it for a few hours.

t420 with the 9 cell it came with and at 50%, think i started using it at around 70% so mine's pretty good.

maybe you should consider geting a 9 cell battery, make sure you get a lenovo one
>>
>>45671973
You won't die if you try it.
I would do so, but I don't play games. Last thing I played was Fallout 1, which I finished, and a bit of Skyrim, which I didn't finish. That was before I dropped my desktop, last year, for my current T60.
>>45670126
Maybe a mouse is better for games. I thought the TrackPoint was a bit inconvenient at the start. Then I thought, "I'm doing this wrong" and I forced myself to use only it for a week.
After over a year of this daily routine, now I'm kinda lost when I use a standard keyboard and mouse. The TrackPoint is way superior, and it takes no space at my desk. I always was fond of low profile keycaps, this T60 is a marvel of technology.

Too bad they aren't being made anymore; gotta hoard even more spare parts (I have a lot of keyboards here, for example).
I'm going to need some extra panels too, they are the next weak link. Even if I don't find planars anymore, I can use the shell as a terminal for a desktop (I use the T60 as a stationary computer, and my phone, which I hate, on the go).
>>
>>45673350

You're really just better off buying a cheap ass broken one if you happen to need a part rather than hoarding a bunch of spares.
>>
Can get a good deal on a working X220T with a slightly cracked screen. I have a spare LED panel however it's for an X220. From what i can tell they aren't actually any different (although different FRU's but can see them advertised on ebay with multiple FRU's). Anyone ever replaced a tablet model screen with a non touch screen? Or have enough experience with different models to confirm my suspicions that x220 screens will fit in an x220T
>>
so i just got my t420 today (with nvidia gpu) and can often hear quite a bit of coil whine. is this what they were like brand new or is it just from general usage

4:3 screens, black, boring and bulky, as a computer should be.
ThinkLight. I use my computer with the lights off and the ThinkLight on at night, just because.
TrackPoint. No mouse is needed (if you want one for games; just use one; I vouch for Microsoft mice, they are inexpensive and they have excellent quality).

On a more personal side, this thirdworlder grew up on a diet of science fiction and mirin IBM servers on local banks. Now I have a woooo muh own IBM branded T60.

Now, they are not for everyone. The classic ThinkPad keyboard is possibly the best compromise that keeps layout as close as possible to a desktop keyboard - except for the non standard Esc position and, of course, Fn.
The newer models no longer have two Ultrabays, nor support the Ultrabay Numpad.
I'm working on those quirks. Just yesterday I got a Numpad on the mail. I will try next to buy an R60 to make it fit there (getting it to work is trivial; the Ultrabay Plus connector is USB with a proprietary connection).
And I will mod the keyboard to reposition some keys.
>>
>>45673426

The IPS screens are the best reason to get the tablet. The IPS ones used in the regular x220 are still taken from the non-multitouch versions for the x220t iirc. So should still probably work with digitizer input.

But if you have a non-IPS one, you're kinda tossing the main reason to have the machine.
>>
>>45673418
That is the proper thing to do for structural, internal parts; I have an extra, working T60p here.
Some parts are extremely difficult to find. A 15" 4:3 T60 palmrest with fingerprint reader is often more expensive than a whole unit.
I intend in the future to use R60 shells for Frankenpads. Even if some mods I'm working on (see >>45673475) are impossible, the thicker case will allow better cooling, and they are way less expensive than a T60.

My old A22m recently woke up from coma. Turns out it's a bugged BIOS or some other chip that prevents it from suspending correctly. When it happens it gets quite annoying, I have to pull out its batteries (main one and CMOS) to let the electrons evaporate from the circuits and reset the power management controller. Turn off suspend on lid off in BIOS and profit.

Currently on a full install Puppy Lucid 5.2.8 and loving it (except for the worrying part of, you know, root access by default).

So, which good distro for this PIII 850MHz, 320MB SDRAM and a whopping 18GB noisy hard disk? Also has a MACH64 ATI graphics card.

Plus it's got a low voltage processor rated at 17W. I'm getting a model with the L7300 at 1.4GHz

Worst part about the R60 I had came across is that you have to modify the CPU fan or frame as the R60's fan is slightly smaller. I couldn't just drop a T60p board onto it.
Well I was afraid of using the R60's fan because it was an integrated graphics one rather than the dedicated in the T60's, so I just saved it instead.
Also the R60 motherboard is a bit funky, the hard drive is at a different spot, I think you might have to modify the chassis for that as well, I forget.
I just remember it being a pain in the ass.

They're business-class computers. You get business-class reliability. Which is as reliable as you can get.

>Shed prefer a 14 inch screen.
Any T4** will do. depending on what she does, you will have to choose between T400, T410 or T420 based on their CPU. If all she does is browse Facebook or Twitter, then a T400 will do fine. If she watches HD video then you might want to get a T410 or T420.

Make sure you look at the specs and that you don't get the shitty 1280x800 or 1366x768 ones.
