Does it matter what brand of RAM i get if i have one stick of 4gb and i want to buy another 4gb (same speed) to put it in dual channel? Does latency speed matter in that decision?

No, I am generally never around other programmers so I don't know what they do. I have heard of some high level guys coding that way.

When you say you would carry it to "work", are you a programmer? If so I don't see why you would need to buy anything. If not then stop writing code and do your actual work.

I'm not entirely sure what everything here does. I added

You can probably get ImageMagick to return the resolution of an image, and use a shell script to loop over everything in *.jpg, only resizing the files that ImageMagick says are over 300x300.

/g/, I need help
I've never bought a tablet before. I'm on the edge between two of them, and both have pretty good reviews. Both of them are 7" tablets

One is the Toshiba Excite Go 7. The only downside I can find is the screen resolution, 1024x600. But a bunch of Samsung galaxy tablets have the same resolution, so I don't see the problem.

The other is the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 or 4. It's more expensive, and it uses proprietary USB connectors. But apparently the resolution is better. Even though every spec for it I can find lists it as 1024x600, just like the other tablet.

Does anyone have experience with either of these tablets? Which one should I get? I would like a 7 inch tablet that is locally available, I don't want to order online unless there's a really good deal somewhere.

the timings dont have to match, the voltage doesn't either but should.
the mobo will use the same voltage and speeds for all it's ram, that being the lowest of any sticks being used. you have 1.3v fast ram stick and 1.5v slow ram stick? mobo will run both at slow timings and 1.3v.
ram timings dont matter and brand doesnt matter. were talking performance increases of less than 4% in the best case scenarios.

There is a difference but you just don't appreciate them. And going from a 7-7-7-18 to a 11-11-11-28 is going to have a performance decrease of larger than 4% especially if you can (spend a couple of dollars to) get something with similarly tight timing.

So I think I have this flac to mp3 thing down now.

assuming you have *.flac in your cwd and a folder.jpg: http://pastebin.com/qt850jV5

It converts to v0, removes the encoder tag, copies folder.jpg to the mp3 folder, resizes if it's bigger than 700x700, and strips the metadata of both the original and the new folder.jpg just because.

Did I fuck anything up? it's meant to be copy pasted because I'm too lazy to make a script or anything for it.

>>

i mean 4% actual program speed not 4% ram performance. ram doesn't have to be bleeding fast for programs to be fast. its not typically the bottleneck so having ram a few ms faster really doesn't do anything
>>
>>45639528
you can add "-strip" to the mogrify command to avoiding needing to use exiftool
you can remove a certain id3 tag with ffmpeg with "-metadata <tag>="""

also, you can embed album art into the mp3 files with ffmpeg, too
>>

that's because you also converted the image

if you're converting the image anyway, you might as well add strip and avoid needing exiftool

though i suppose you'd need to account for files that don't need resizing, maybe it's not worth the effort

I'm a UNIX/Linux guy who's just getting up to speed on Windows programming.

My question:

What is the Windows equivalent of a Linux ".a" file?

Can a Windows ".LIB" contain the object code itself, like a ".a" file does?

Most of the ".LIB" examples I have seen are using the ".LIB" simply to provide the export information for a corresponding ".DLL" file.

But is it possible for a Windows ".LIB" file to contain the actual object code itself to be statically linked in? If not, then how would you do that in the Windows world?

sandra henry-stocker has a good blog about tips and tricks.
there isn't really a single cheat sheet, you just pick up each thing as you go along

>>45640291
Tails has a windows camoflage mode, and fiddling with a usb on a public computer isn't an unusual sight, if you can manually boot. It also has a quick shutdown, and I doubt just pulling the drive out would harm it.
Even if you run virtualbox off a memory stick, it's hard to tell what would be left behind on a windows computer with registry entries and all that. There probably won't be anything blatant like a file on the desktop called "THE LAST USER USED A VM TO LOOK AT HIS LOLI" or anything like that. It depends who you're hiding from and on what computers.

>>45640362
Well, I'll find one eventually, but I just thought that some of you might have an activator or a link bookmarked.

enhanced for loop, syntax ex:
int stuff[];
for (int x : stuff) //read "for each int in int[] stuff"
{
//do some stuff
}

IIRC that structure in java is called "enhanced for loop" but I could be wrong
>>
>>45640404
In most languages that's just called a "for loop".

I think I'll use two 16 or 32gb usb sticks. Thanks.

For the Ebay question, i mainly meant what is stopping someone from not shipping their item after you've paid
>>
>>45640428
oh I figured it out, it's just a for each loop. idk why in java they call it "enhanced for loop"
>>
>>45640495
Ebay will refund the money to the buyer and go after the seller for the balance.
>>
>>45640404
I'd call that an iterator loop

>>45640468
good power management, you can probably change it but if you're not using it, it doesn't need to be on

>>45640495
you can report them for doing so, and i believe it's then up to the seller to proove that they did send it. I expect if someone "didn't" recieve loads of things then ebay would get suspicious

>>45640496
i've never heard that before
>>
>>45640362
Yeah that makes sense. I can just run the VM software from my drive and load tails that way right? I will just do that for now unless I feel like I need to go the liveUSB route later on

If my speed is this good, how come my torrents and Steam downloads are so slow? I barely break 1.5mb/s on them.
>>
>>45640577
Lack of peers and/or your peers have slow download/upload speeds
>>
>>45640560
yes, but if it's someone else's computer they might not have virtualbox installed.
that doesn't protect from keyloggers installed on your own computer (how certain are you that you don't have anything nasty?)

>>45640577

probably throttled by steam
>torrents
more surprising, assuming that the torrents have enough peers

Your ISP might allow a higher speed for the first X MB but then slow you down, to allow bursty connections to work better

Is there a difference between brands of Ram? I know timing matters, but I'm looking at Team Elite ram because it's the cheapest.

Why don't games let you play with other people from different consoles?

Like, if person A is using a PS4 and playing an online game that's available on all consoles, why can't that guy play with person B who uses an Xbox One?
>>
>>45640622
It has to be installed on both the host and the drive in order to work?
>>
>>45640577
speedtest uses mbits.

8mbits = 1mbyte
27.95/8 = 3.49

also factor in most ISP's increase speeds you get on speedtest, it's not a big surprise.
>>
>>45640692
microsoft and sony think that if you want to play with your friends, then you should buy what console they play on, its a sorta way to get you to buy more, it's why I barely touch my ps4 anymore.

How would I go about setting a daily cron job to TRIM ssd on arch? Or should I just use discard and do fstrim -v / randomly?

>>
>>45641077

Depends what you are doing.
If your gaming, you're probably going to want 1.6-1.8 GHz clock speed.

Yeah, that's fine.

Not a lot.
Outside of special workloads it doesn't make much difference.

seriously? I'd equate ecig threads to thinkpad threads in terms of consumerism. They're mostly about building shit yourself out of the cheapest parts you can get. Hell, if you wanna talk about consumerist threads on /g/ just look at the endless stream of peripheral threads. Mechanical keyboards get daily threads with 200+ posts but if I wanna know more about how shorting a battery at specific resistances is gonna keep it from exploding in my face, then fuck me? go to hell.

But in general it is a pain in the ass.

I fucking love yaourt. I use AUR a lot and it is annoying to have to do everything manually.

yaourt -s dwb-git

Dwb of official repos has no flash support but the one in AUR (dwb-git) does.
Just a lot of little shit like that makes yaourt wonderful.
