What does /g/ think of the Windows 10 technical preview and the future of Windows in general?

Upgrade beyond Windows 10.
>>
>>45609472
I didn't know i want it until now
>>
I'll use it since I only use windows for brain-cell destroying AAA shit and directX 12 will only be available on Win10
>>
>>45609447
Best version of windows yet :^)
>>
>>45609592
that's why i use GNU
>>
>>45609447
It only shows changing the start menu was an idiotic idea in Windows 8. I hope someone got fired for that.

>>45610419
>yfw balmer did
>>
>>45610419
Steven Sinovsky is the guy who went down the road over windaz 8

>>45610443
Ballmer went down the road over all that 'We're a devices company now' bullshit
>>
If they pick up a subscription-based model for the product, I'm not buying in. I'll just run various distros of Linux and virtualize Win7 if Wine doesn't support the desired software. The only shit I need for work is fully compatible with Wine, thankfully. If it's an inexpensive and effective OS with a competitive price, then the Windows product family could make a comeback to compensate for Win8's controversy.
>>
>>45610487
If that happens I'll just run windows 7 for as long as possible and then consider a hackintosh
>>
What's different other than the Start Menu?
Will Windows 8 users get a free upgrade?
>>
>>45610505
Yeah, it seems like we'll have to rely on 7 for legacy stuff if they screw us with 10, preferably with a VM as the last resort.

>>45609625
Haven't tried it yet but there's something called Clover 3 that gives you tabs in in explorer
>>
>>45610567
I thought they were releasing Windows 10 to fix people's issues, not make more.
>>
>>45610585
Why do you need 2 places for different options
>>
>>45610518
1. Mostly the new start menu, as far as joe blow is concerned. A lot of little minor stuff as well. Metro, I mean Modern, I mean Universal Apps can actually run in a non-fullscreen window now.
2. Supposedly Win8 users will get a free upgrade, but we all know how MS likes to fuck up a good idea.

>>45610585
Fix old ones, make new ones. Thus we observe the circle of life
>>
>>45610594
I like my control panel because its easy and convenient, not a mess of sliding menus that are hidden in nonsensical order.
>>
>>45609447
>Using anything windows after 8

Imho microsoft needs to make a major strategic shift now that windows is no longer the cash cow it used to, because less and less people use the desktop and android won the mobile market. They should focus on enterprise and the cloud.
>>
>>45610537
I kind of like it
but it should have different icon for each option
>>
>>45610621
I used to think that corporations would never use Windows 8, but mine just released Windows 8.1 as the primary supported OS.
>>
>>45609447
It is hard to say with the tech preview as it is a preview so loads can/should change. it is still ugly as fuck. Yosemite looks so much nicer once you turn off the transparency shit. Windows 8 and 10 look shit.

>>
>>45610860
The surface pro is marketed for home geeks. Too expensive and lacks many features the entreprise needs. One of those if of course the toying OS.

We're getting cheap notebooks instead.
>>
>>45609447
Uglier than 3.11, still too touch centric for my taste with those huge line spacing and font sized and metro shit.
Gonna keep W7 till 2020 the way things are going, with C# /.net/VS starting to be viable under Linux I don't really care about the future "desktop Windows".

The amount of malware on Windows is enough to avoid it unless there is no choice. Scanning at each file i/o operation is just bogging the system down.

I'm using the built in Windows Classic theme and the borders are pretty close. Not that small, but almost.

>>
>>45611782
They actually put the Up button back in 7 after Vista removed it specifically BECAUSE so many people used it.
>>
>>45611802
That's fucked up, there's already 3 buttons on the windows explorer that does just the same
-The address bar
-Back button
-Up button
>>
>>45611830
That's wrong. The up button is very useful, doesn't take up much space, and suggesting that it be replaced with "just manually modify the file path" is retarded.

The "back" button won't always bring you to the same place as the "up" button. Say you followed a shortcut, or you searched for a folder, or you manually navigated to a directory.

I have it in 8, but I don't remember having it in 7. I think anon was mistaken.

You can install Classic Shell and get it back.
>>
>>45611916
>I have it in 8
And how much do you use it exactly?
Anyways, as the anon said, it doesn't take much space, so I don't care, but the other stuff should be definitely removed.
>>
>>45611950
All the fucken time m8

It just occurred to me that I could use the breadcrumbs, but I usually have those disabled anyway.
>>
>>45609447
can your registry still get corrupted in win10
i know it still exist in 8.1
>>
>>45611950
Different person.
Exactly five seconds ago was the first time I ever pressed that button.
>>
>>45611352

Yes. But it's confusing when the OS displays file lists in descending order, per column, and then the Control Panel displays them in descending order, across all columns.

They could have left it alone years ago when they made the idiot proof category version. But no, they had to change shit for no fucking reason.
>>
>>45609447
Gentoo.
>>
>>45611950
>And how much do you use it exactly?

All the time. The back button might go either up or down through a folder tree, that will always take me up. It's one of the only things I think Win8 does better in terms of UI.
