How much of a mistake am I about to make /g/?
>>
>>45593252

mistake on what? You didn't even tell us what you were doing.
>>
>>45593277
Obviously he's buying an msi laptop, look at the pic man.
>>
if you know what you're getting and have assessed whether or not it is a smart purchase then its not a mistake

but since you're actuall unsure then you're making one at the moment. are you buying the macbook just because of the social status of apple products?
>>
>>45593252

No more of a mistake than buying an Omega, a BMW, or a bottle of Chimay Bleue.

Enjoy it. Savour it. Live it.
>>
Buying a rMBP?

No mistake at all; best laptop currently.
>>
>late 2013
A big one.

Get the newer ones.

You gon do good boi, pull the trigga

am i just paranoid or are the apple shills actually real?

16:10 masterrace. Can't be helped, its not like you really have an option

>>45593323
Yeah I will, this is just the first image I saw.

>>45593277
Hey, welcome to /g/!
>>
>>45593252
I have one.

Pros
>Beautiful display. HiDPI will spoil you and the colors look great.
>Best trackpad ever. This is not hyperbole. Apple laptops have the best trackpads you can get period.
>Unix and all that entails (if you care)
>All day battery life
>Light and thin enough that you can easily forget it's in your bag.

Cons
>Lags in some applications under HiDPI (scrolling through applications on dock, PDFs)
>Using any web browser but Safari will fuck your battery life
>13" is too small to get much "real" work done unless you want to be constantly switching workspaces, or have an external monitor
>Designed to run at extremely high temperatures under load (~80-90C) and the heat WILL kill your storage and iGPU after a long enough time. A cooling pad is strongly recommended
>No ethernet port, no optical

I like it enough that I haven't sold mine yet but if I could do it all over again, I'd probably buy something else. Also, OS X is overrated. It's a good OS but has flaws just like any other system.

fixed that for you

>>45593367

I used to work at the Apple store, and I used to shill /g/ pretty hard. Not because I got paid to do it. It just came naturally with the job. It's like brainwashing.

I still love their products though, because they are good. Expensive, yeah. But you get what you pay for, as the age old saying goes.

how come?

Apple.

To be fair, some hardware touchpad implementations suck ass, it's not just the software alone that makes it great

Dear Macfag,

Please include such keywords as "Mac", "OS X", "Apple", or "MBP" in posts like these so that I may more effectively filter you.

Thanks,

A 15" business-class laptop with a dedicated GPU. I had to carry a backup T400 while my MBPr was at the Apple store being serviced and I didn't miss it as much as l through it would. The Thinkpad wasn't too bad to carry around and I enjoyed having optical, VGA, and ethernet ports.

>>45593450
I honestly don't know. All I know is my battery life is significantly lower under Firefox and Chrome just kills it when it's open.
>>
>>45593523
I didn't miss it as much as I thought I would**
>>
>>45593252
Love my rMBP in every way except for the keyboard. I wish it had a ThinkPad keyboard w/ the key travel, but whatever.

As a CS student, the *nix environment is nice too. Though I've never used a Windows machine to program -- if I had a different laptop I'd probably install linux.
>>
>>45593514
Trying too hard.
>>
>>45593514

>someone rustled by other people's purchases.

It's like you have no life or something.
>>
>>45593669
That's what I like about my pre-unibody MBP, no chicklets and proper key travel
>>
>>45593252
Bought one a month ago and not sure if I regret it. The display is amazing and having handwritten (STEM) notes on screen are super delicious and unrustling. However, 128 gb storage, Intel Iris no gaymin, is harsh and unforgiving. Also 13' is 2 inch too short imo, but I'm not shelling out 500$ more just for that.
>>
If you like OS X, no mistake. If you dislike OS X, huge mistake.

but you're making a fucking horrible mistake

Mistake, but not because you're a shill or blah blah blah /g/ meme. CES is right around the corner. A new model is likely to come out like it does every year. This is the worst possible time to buy any Mac.

Wait a few months.

An awesome mistake as long as you do not want to play any gaymens or do 3D modeling it's one of the best laptops I've ever tried. If you like the hardware but not the software? Run Gentoo/Windows/Any other Linux based OS on it!
>>

>is obviously stupid

I agree with the anon above.
>>
>>45593412

expanding on this with my own personal experience

my battery doesn't get fucked at all when i don't use safari, maybe if i'm watching a live stream flash player will destroy it, but definitely not light browsing. and i also never experienced any lag in any application.

also if you are getting it for programming, 13" is perfectly fine OP, for photo editing etc maybe 15" would be better. switching workspaces/desktops is really easy with customisable hotkeys. and if you were somehow opposed to it workspaces, 2" extra screen real estate probably isnt going to solve it.

if you are a programmer, i would suggest you get one. running a unix-like os natively on a machine without gimping yourself (like linux on most laptops) is godlike

but yeah it can run very hot while running games, probably video rendering etc.
>>
>>45594866
OS X is Unix certified, it's not Unix-like.
>>
>>45594887

>*A Unix-like (sometimes shortened to nix to circumvent trademark issues) operating system is one that behaves in a manner similar to a Unix system, while not necessarily conforming to or being certified to any version of the Single UNIX Specification.

>There is no standard for defining the term, and some difference of opinion is possible as to whether or not a certain OS is "Unix-like".

OS X is Unix based, and Unix certified like you said. Does that not make it Unix-like? Should I say Unix-based instead?
>>
>>45594955
I think Unix-like implies non-certification. Unix based or Unix certified is more clear.

>>

Don't buy a Macbook unless you're willing to buy the better specs. RAM is typically soldered onto the MOBO and I think the SSDs are in some cases too.

You also want to unsure good resale value so you can sell it before it shits the bed 4 years after buying it. No point in waiting for its value to be $0.
>>
Retina version. Awesome displays are the only good thing about apple atm. Everything else is overpriced.
>>
>>45595125
The RAM is soldered. The storage is user replaceable.
>>
>>45595283
Don't MBAs have custom SSD chips that are part of the motherboard?
>>
>>45595302
No but it they are now using proprietary connectors. Or maybe it was a proprietary interface? I don't remember.

You can technically swap it out still, but it won't work.
>>
>>45595283
I think that replacing storage voids warranty
>>
>>45594488

No clue.
>>
Gonna ask this here instead of making a thread.

Is it worth it to buy a secondhand MBP? I'm eying a few models from 2011 and while they're in decent condition I wasn't sure how long Apple usually supports hardware. Think machines from that year will last a few more OS updates?
>>
>>45595494
Sneezing on a macbook voids the warranty.
>>
You won't regret it
>>
>>45593438

So have you ever even owned a Macbook?
>>
>>45595545
thx for the serial # bro :^)
>>
>>45595545

As much as I miss aqua, that UI does look nice when you pair a decent wallpaper with it.
>>
Mac's are good machines and OSX has a good CLI. No company has made a touchpad as well as Apple. The only reason why it is controversial is because it is perceived to be expensive (find a similar spec laptop and it won't be too much more for the Mac) Apple isn't transparent with their software or part of the opensource and/or free community. If you don't care about those two things then a Mac is great.
>>
>>45595125

Well, now that 8GB is standard, I don't think RAM will be a problem for at least 5-7 years

SSD is the future, and no one needs more than 256GB if you have external storage for Porn/Anime/Installers/RAR files/Musics you don't listen to.

The retina display will look gorgeous for ever. simply as that.
>>
>>45595545

THX for the serial, now I will crack a yosemite copy, if you get arrested and you iCloud account deleted, just suck the cop's dick and everything will be alright for you.
>>
>>45595591
Enjoy checking his warranty.

>>45593450
1. Safari is the best optimized browser for OS X
2. Firefox and Chrome activate and use the dedicated GPU instead of integrated graphics
>>
>>45595723
Doesn't Safari have horrible security issues the same as IE usually?

I've heard of people having problems with 8 GB of RAM.
>>
>>45595798
With what, running a VM cluster?

What the fuck do you have to do to use 5GB on an ultrabook (assuming the OS is using 3GB)?
>>

>>
>>45595798

Linux is by far the best environment ive programmed in.
Great collection of up to date software and everything works nicely together.
OSX requires you to jump through hoops just to get a non ancient version of GCC and its Windows Manager and Desktop Environment is pure shit and annoying.
Windows is by far the worst.
>>
got here late but clearly mac owners are a minority in /g/ so here goes

Check those specs mate, I honestly hate intel Gpus so i went for a refurb and got a 512 SSD for under 2k

rMBP june 2012 have a 650 facto OCd to 900 MHz effectively making it a 660. OS uses 2gb at most rest is up t ur shit ivi bridge still holds up pretty well, just be sure to put some gc extreme on those heatsinks and youll be good to go.
>>
>>45595798
I'm still using a lapop with just 4GB of RAM. Doesn't really slow down that much when I'm being a "TAB-HOG" and have 20+ tabs open on my browser.
>>
>>45593450
One of Apple's major selling points is laptop battery life, and they know it. They pump tons of money into engineering all their shit for that exact purpose. In the past few years they've introduced a ton of fine-grained power management features and made changes to stuff like kernel scheduling patterns just to get everything they can out of their hardware.

Chrome isn't designed with that kind of mentality. It's a desktop browser first, and it was always built around using the available CPU power to go as fast as possible. If Apple can sacrifice 1% speed to use 25% less battery life, they'll fucking take that deal. You know it.

Firefox has a lot of problems: Too little manpower to engineer things the way they want, and too crufty a codebase to make major changes. That's why they made Rust and Servo, to offload some of the work to the language/compiler.

>>45595733
>Doesn't Safari have horrible security issues the same as IE usually?
Safari's security used to be pretty weak, but lately it works on the same basic principle as Chrome: Run dangerous code in sandboxed processes so there's a whole VM's worth of extra security layers to break out of before you can do any damage. However, the way it implements this is via OS X's native sandbox capabilities, meaning it's faster but less portable.
>>
If you have an iPhone it is great.
Continuity/Handoff is awesome.
>>
anyone know what the battery life is like on the 15" i7 haslel/750m?
there's one on craigslist for cheap
>>
My laptop broke so I wanted to buy a rmbp.
Now I really want to wait for the new ones which will probably be out in 3 months. Im thinking of getting a cheap thinkpad to tide me over.
