>Google Pulling Out Of Russia Because They Can't Send Data To NSA

No, seriously.

http://privilege.com/2014/12/11/google-russia-engineering/

>Search giant plans to shutter its engineering office, according to a report, after Russia passed restrictive laws on how international tech companies can store data.

> "Most Russians don't want their data to leave Russia for the United States, where it can be hacked and given to criminals... Our entire lives are stored over there," Russian MP Vadim Dengin said when the laws were introduced earlier this year.

Why would you want other people spying on the people your spying on? The data loses value.
>>
>>45590595
Russia can request data on any of their citizens from Google/MS/Apple/Twitter/Facebook etc. And those companies comply. That's not the issue.

Issue is that Google is extremely close to NЅА and State Department and the rest of the security agencies and Russians don't want their citizens to be spied upon wholesale.
>>
>>45590600
Exactly, moot made it EASIER to post unanonymously, and harder to anonymously.

Sort of thinking this new captcha makes it easier for googlebots. We can't buy 4chan passes anymore because moot already has plenty of cash flow from google now.

Why does /g/ make a point of singling out Google? Americas laws make it legal for a secret court to compel any US company to feed information to intelligence agencies (ie. PRISM), and do so under a strict gag order that prevents them from even saying they're under a gag order.

Either admit you don't care, or cut ALL US based companies out of your life.

>Either admit you don't care, or cut ALL US based companies out of your life.

Why? Because there is NO ONE who has MORE DATA ABOUT YOU than Google. NO ONE! Not even the US Gov has more data on you.

And Google is EXTREMELY CLOSE to US Gov. Google was in bed with NЅА for a very long time! You can find lawsuits by EFF asking US gov to disclose their relationship with Google and that lawsuit was quashed by courts citing national security act.

Assange has said that Eric Schmidt is working for СIА or State Department.

> In 2004, after taking over Keyhole, a mapping tech startup co-funded by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and the CIA, Google developed the technology into Google Maps, an enterprise version of which it has since shopped to the Pentagon and associated federal and state agencies on multimillion-dollar contracts.

Literally trying to make "licencing map data" sound scary.

>or maybe it's just not worth their while to duplicate their entire infrastructure inside russia
They kinda did already, except they placed the datacenter in Finland. Lets be real the only reason they put it there is that it is close proximity to Russian customers. Also the news item points out that Google is still leaving sales and support people to Russian offices, so they are not really even "pulling out" for real.

The idea that customer data should be held in country where that customer lives is not out of this world. More countries are going to come up with similar laws. And by the way EU already has a directive that could possibly force companies outside Europe to bounce around.
>Personal data may only be transferred to third countries if that country provides an adequate level of protection.
You could argue that none of the data stored in US has adequate level of protection.

> During the same period, Google—whose publicly declared corporate mission is to collect and “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful”—was accepting NSA money to the tune of $2 million to provide the agency with search tools for its rapidly accreting hoard of stolen knowledge.

Scary! Except he doesn't mention that Google sells standalone search appliances to practically anyone with the cash. He spins it to sound like they were specifically in bed with the NSA, without actually saying that.

He also calls out Pages and Brin receiving DARPA funding for their initial research that spawned Google, but doesn't mention that DARPA pumps billions of dollars into a multitude of research projects, even if they're only tangentially related to military applications. Again, making it sound like Google had close ties to the USG from the beginning when they were just getting a research grant from an organisation that gives out thousands of research grants per year.

Maybe there is a legitimate point in that mess, but I find it very hard to take him at face value when he's so obviously pushing an agenda.

This article is an outright lie pushed by Putin directly through RT, the Russian government's propaganda arm.

The REAL reason Google pulled out of Russia is because Russia passed a draconian Internet surveillance law that requires all foreign Internet companies to maintain servers with their user's data on Russia soil so the government can request the data at any time.

Putin has been directing Russia Today to push the "LEL AMERICA IS POLICE STATE! NSA!" propaganda hard, but Putin has turned the Russian government's Internet surveillance network into something even more powerful than the NSA.
>>
>pulls out from China
>pulls out from Russia

Both are huge growing markets, you are not supposed to leave money on the table. Only retard would do this, or someone working for the government.
>>
>>45591066
Here's another hilarious intentional oversight:

> In 2012, Google arrived on the list of top-spending Washington, D.C., lobbyists—a list typically stalked exclusively by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, military contractors, and the petro-carbon leviathans. Google entered the rankings above military aerospace giant Lockheed Martin, with a total of $18.2 million spent in 2012 to Lockheed’s $15.3 million. Boeing, the military contractor that absorbed McDonnell Douglas in 1997, also came below Google, at $15.6 million spent, as did Northrop Grumman at $17.5 million.

He's trying to put Google in the same group as scary defense contractors by just not including any company that doesn't serve his point. You know you spends more money on Google on lobbying, by the very source he linked? The American Hospital Association. Are they in bed with the military industrial complex too?

Sure. The other reason is that if servers reside on foreign soil, the company must comply with local law, including privacy laws. USA isn't really keen on that privacy thingy.

>>
>>45591773
Why do you think moot is selling 4chan?
NOBODY WANTS 4CHAN.

If anything, Moot is probably losing money via Google services depending on his this was resolved:

Javascript analytics are the only means he has to sell the site to advertisers, so it may have been worth his while to pay that amount.

Maximum Kekkage

Sure, they don't have that money, but the oligarchs and corrupt government officials who run the country do. So much so that the Forbes top 100 would be all-Russian if they knew how much they actually had.

Also you are thinking too much inside the box, a massive farm doesn't have to be massive in a lateral sense, it can be a skyscraper, and Moscow has a few very new and very fancy ones that cost more than a few of your "billions" to build. Hmm, I wonder what's inside? The general public that doesn't get let in sure doesn't!
>>
Imagine if someday Google became so powerful that they ended up rivaling the government in terms of influence and resources.

Now imagine Google adopting Bitcoin and using their massive servers to maintain online transactions.

Then imagine Google's entire infrastructure begins to take shape all across the planet.

Capitalism gave birth to the corporation.

What follows after Capitalism is a corporation that takes over the previous system.

So far Google seems to be the runner up for such a position.

They'll have so much global influence that pushing them out of their nation could cripple it the same way trying to push out oil imports could collapse an entire nation's economy.

Nah, the service is great if you have the ca$h to pay for it. What's happening now is the old guard cable companies are trying to hold on to their old way of doing things while hiding anti-competitive behavior in their systems. They see the writing on the wall. They've had this great system where they charge people for access, and then sell those wealthy people with disposable income whom are willing to pay for trivial shit like flickering pictures on a screen to advertisers. They are charging both sides of the game. Millennials were weaned in this media rich environment, so the same old Bernays tricks aren't working as well as they projected. They are losing eyeballs, and losing control of the market.

So, data caps, charging a premium for video data that isn't under their control, packet inspection, anti-competitive QOS, all of that is a sort of scramble to get as much as they can before the Boomers die and leave them in the lurch. They are also terrified that Google is pivoting into physical infrastructure, and they also see the fact that the Broadband Internet has become a necessary thing for people to engage with American society. Utility-style Federal regulation of Broadband Internet as something as necessary as electricity and water/sewer service WILL happen. It's not a matter of if it happens. It's a matter of when it happens.

Poor example in this case, Russia is a major exporter of crude oil for much of Europe, there is no critical resource that they are dependent on other countries for. After the sanctions preventing any kind of raw product import (meat, cheese, and such), it hasn't been a few months and Russians are already making knock-offs that are no worse than import product.

Parmesan cheese? Yep. Foie gras? Never left the restaurant's menu. Angus beef? already being bred.

This is not theorizing the future, Russia has already made tremendous headway in gaining independence, starting with all govenment computers being made entirely in-country.

Some counties that have oil will do fine, those who do not are screwed without it. IT is sort of the new oil of the 21st century in that it's required to have a functioning society these days. I wish every country did this. It's easy to spy on foreigners by collecting data when you're safe inside US borders. Let's see how powerful Google really is when it must operate inside other countries.

Countries should actively filter out connections between any website which is not represented within its borders. That would kill the internet, but doing otherwise would be killing government's sovereignty. It would mean failing to protect its citizens from the US.

NSA first needs valid reasons to destroy anyone's life. The avarage person doesn't even fall in that spectrum. NSA doesn't just go pick random people like a lottery to ruin them.

Yes. You do not understand the goal of a dictator. Any dictator ever wants to dominate over his society, not destroy it.
Every master needs a slave in order to be a master. Without slaves there would be no master.
Read the Philosophy of History by Hegel and you will understand the motives behind kings, rulers, and dictators.
>>
>>45599962
>I just don't think NSA is really as important as it seems.
I believe the contrary, it's even worse for us non-US people, because of the same past shown in those wikipedia articles and the mentality of the people involved... they can extort politicians, militia men and business men, steal industrial/financial secrets and so on, and Glenn Greenwald has already shown that they have done that many times. how is this not important? hell, they used this information to drone "terrorists"

>My whole point is that there are better strategies to prevent USA from turning into corperate dictatorship.
how is the US *not* a corporate dictatorship? the US is following the definition of fascism without all the bells and whistles.

>>45599997
>Yes. You do not understand the goal of a dictator
the goal of a dictator is to remove its opposition, whatever that means for him/her. if you are somehow related to said opposition, you are in danger, and they won't ask twice about your political affiliations or personal associations, they will simply kill you.
look at the history of latin america, that's more than enough to know that you simply can't trust anything that comes from the US, because it all comes with strings attached.

So instead of focusing on NSA directly, it is better to do it on a cultural level.

>the goal of a dictator is to remove its opposition, whatever that means for him/her.

Obviously, but its even better to turn the opposition to your side. Look at Europe. The USA could destroy them easily, but instead they let Europe work for them.
To keep people happy you must create the illusion of freedom. In that sense Chinese are more free then Americans, in the sense that atleast they know they are being opressed.

there is a difference, they (and perhaps also you) don't understand how our current technology makes everything (tracking people, wiretapping, data mining...) way easier than the way they did it in the past. of course, it's not only about technology, but... people working for the NSA (read: random techie autists) only follow orders, they don't question them
