Arguably there's nothing wrong with the chiclet design as it still provides a nice typing feel. I'm going to say that most people on /g/ can type on their keyboard without looking at it so why would the key appearance bother you?

The real problem is the keyboard layout which has been utterly fucked from the Sandy Bridge (e.g. T420) models.

The removal of the trackpoint buttons is a step back in usability. The clickpad takes a stupid amount of force to activate and it's really quite fatiguing to use, not to mention the loud noise.

Removing the status LEDs was a step back as well, how can I see if my disk is just being thrashed vs. a complete lock up.

The lack of inner metal rollcage is also a step back for durability, along with the use of soldered RAM in certain ThinkPads when Dell and HP are shipping equivalent models with 2 RAM slots.

Source: I had to use a T440p for a while

Even with the new W541/W550s Lenovo fail to recognise the clusterfuck they've created.

Threadly reminder that if something isn't working that you think should be (wifi, bluetooth, etc) download the Thinkvantage Updater and run it. It's Lenovo's own update system. This will give you the power manager as well.

I might do some shitty models in blender too.

While touch screen is bad for the reflective screen but I feel that going foward is a really good input method.

Why specifically /g/ hates the new thinkpads? is the keyboard?
>>
>>45589624
Shitty keyboard layout is but one of the many flaws that earn the derision among the ThinkPad community

New ThinkPads are derisively nicknamed ChinkPads after Lenovo, a chinese company, fucked their once great design up in attempt to market to the crApple crowd, with new designs resembling macbooks more than the professional, hardy machines we knew.

The clickpad on some models is hated by many because it's big and integrates the trackpoint buttons into itself, resulting in many users accidentally right-clicking instead of middle clicking. Its huge area also meant that people using the trackpoint have to arch their hand and strain their wrist to avoid contacting the trackpad portion, and that is a massive ergonomical failure.

Many Chinkpads also lack the roll cage and strong hinges of their predecessors. This may seem irrelevant to users who don't regularly drop their laptops, but when it does happen you'd regret it, especially when classic ThinkPads wouldn't have this problem.

The keyboard layout is often criticized for rearranging or removing several keys like the function key or F1-F12, which definitely does make it harder to work with if these keys are used regularly. Of course this is not an issue with the regular consumer, but to those who actually make use of these keys, it's an avoidable handicap for the sake of aesthetics.
Chiclet keys are hit or miss compared to using an external mech board or classic scissor switch; you either love it or hate it.

On a personal note, I don't like touch screens because they do not have the tactile feedback which you would have using a mouse or keyboard. Newer Thinkpad X-series tablets (X220/X230) have edge detection problems and poor resolutions as well.

tl;dr chinkpads sacrifice durability and some degree of usability for aesthetics
>>
>>45589535
Excellent.

Aluminium body + magnesium rollcage. No flex in the chassis or display. It's heavy as fuck though.

4 total RAM slots, 2 under the back panel (which is removed via 2 screws) + 2 under the keyboard.

Hard drive has a eject mechanism, easy to remove as well. You could put 3 storage devices in it, (HDD, HDD in optical bay + mSATA).
>>
>>45589790
These are scissor switches?

Only the key cap design has changed along with the layout?
>>
>>45589888
Chiclet scissor switch aren't too different from regular scissor switches, but those without scissor switches are said to be more squishy and uncomfortable to type on.

However the focus lies upon the changed layout which is a massive bane to the userbase

So, I've got a X200 Thinkpad. Great machine, works really nice in almost every aspect - however, I can't enable internal wi-fi.

I've tried anything I may come up with - installed all and any drivers of course, tried multiple Linux distributions and Windows versions, Installed BIOS hack to enable unsupported wifi modules - and tried those in the machine - but absolutely to no avail.

And since there's 3 pcie slots - 2 full size and 1 half size, I've tried them all, but still, nothing. I'm entirely unable to use internal wi-fi at all, so I'm stuck using USB wifi which overheats and drains the battery faster, or then I'm using ethernet but that kills the idea of a mobile computer.

Network management applet on Linux says "wireless disabled by a hardware switch, but it sure as hell isn't, and even if it was, it would shut off the bluetooth as well, but bluetooth works just fine.

Anyone else ever had this problem? I'm at a loss, I can't think of anything anymore. Device manager / lspci recognizes the card just fine, but it just won't work. Incredibly frustrating.

Alright so whilst dicking around with my x220 trying to fit a nice little msata ssd I managed to snap my caps lock key off of the keyboard.

As far as I can tell the key has lost maybe one little plastic nub off of one of its clasps. This means that it attaches and pops back into place and stays there but if I catch it or knock it in any way it's liable to detach again.

Do you think I should super glue it into place?

X201 ~$100
T420 ~$150
X220 ~200

Most T420 comes with optical bay drive

Priority specs: resolution>CPU>GPU

Difference between i5 and i7 is miniscule. nVIDIA is better than Intel but still not worth it if you'll have to pay extra.

I've been on /g/ for longer then I'd care to admit; and when I first came here, there was a lot of hype for the t61(p).

I can tell you from experience that any specific device hyped by /g/ is best left ignored.

The t61 looks nice; however it doesn't look... like an IBM thinkpad.
>>
>>45595007
Well it isn't, I think it's the first thinkpad by Lenovo or something. Wasn't the T60 by IBM?

I got myself a really pretty x61 some time ago.
It's very basic though, I put some extra ram on it and the only thing missing now is a new battery and a wifi-card, the wifi is the only thing keeping me from using it more often (since the shitty usb dongle loses connection a lot).

Should I buy one of the internal wifi cards that can go with the x61, which are a bit slow I think, or should I got with a better usb one?
Could anyone recommend any? I had a lot of trouble with the driver of the current one.

T61's are good but they are now outdated IMO, but they were hyped for good reason 2+ years ago.

Arch is not hyped by /g/, what are you talking about? Just go look at desktop threads, there is a pretty small minority that uses Arch.

Headphone General is just a retarded circlejerk (as all Generals, typically), but the suggested headphone guides are good for the most part.

Search multiple models you're interested in on ebay with something like "x200 -parts" so you don't get broken machines. Sort by "price + postage: lowest first", follow the searches and check your emails every morning.

Search your local craigs lists occasionally every few days for the same models.

It's tough to get a good machine for under 100, but not impossible, just have to be proactive when searching for good deals.
>>
>>45595331
So you want a tiny laptop with an optical drive?

That's unrealistic. There are other things that have to go into the laptop, like the motherboard and hard drive and shit. You need space for that.
