Newfag here, What is all the thinkpads on /g/?

How hard is it to find models of the W series?

what

>>45573579
I mean, they're readily available on eBay. There just aren't as many of them and prices vary wildly depending on how it was configured

Sorry I wrote it like a retard.

Why does /g/ like Thinkpads so much?
>>
>>45573620
They are durable, have god-tier keyboards and input devices (until the most recent models that is), and are available very cheaply on the secondhand market

I wish my Thinkpad wasn't broken.

It had my kick ass riced linux distro installed and it fucked up a few months ago.

IT STOPPED CHARGING
IT DIED
THE POWER OUTLET ON THE BACK ISN'T WORKING

And you know what's worse of it all? I don't even know how to fix it. I've tried taking the cover off and going inside, but the damn laptop is guarded to the brim with metal sheets which make it impossible to dust off and repair any broken or loose connections.

I'm so fucked. I will never get another laptop. I was starting to write my novel on it too. Someone please help me get my babby thinkpad back.

They're not vital so much as the hardware was necessary for mobile computing. I liked my distro.

Maybe I can just work overtime.

I'm fairly impressed with Ubuntu's power management out of the box so far. It's been a while since I used Linux on a laptop, but yesterday night I realized there was nothing really tying me to Windows anymore so I installed it and it works quite nicely on my X220. Only problem is that the dashboard thing is slower than I'd like

Hey /g/, i need some help. I have a X1 Carbon 1Gen 3448 with a US keyboard but i would like the nowagian one. How can i get one cheap? The machine is american but can i call in to Lenovo and request a new keyboard under warranty? I have not seen anny keyboard under 300$.
Plz /g/ halp!
>>
>>45575809
Isn't the keyboard and palm rest and the whole top just one piece?

Then yeah it'll be kind of expensive and a pain to replace if you're doing it yourself, it's probably not even customer serviceable without voiding the warranty.

Shouldn't have gotten an X1 Carbon.
>>
>>45575809
You likely can't get a new keyboard under warrenty. I'm not even sure how easy it is to replace the parts on the carbon (or if it's possible at all), but standard thinkpad procedure is checking the FRU of the part you're after on their website, then contacting lenovo or buying the part from a reseller.

No one here recommends the X1 though, since it's not really a thinkpad beyond its name.

Not running programs usually reduces CPU load.

Personally I have my fan set to not even turn on until it reaches 55C. That plus an SSD = dead quiet machine most of the time.

>>45577495
Because your fan is turned down, or you need to clean out the vents, or you need to replace the thermal paste, or you have shit running in the background using up the CPU. Or you have bad power management that is constantly poling the CPU.

Portability, good keyboard, long battery life, and at least an i5 CPU
>>
>>45577931
Why the cpu requirement?
>>
>>45577984
Well I really trust Intel CPUs for one, and in my experience the i5 is one on of their best. Is there another CPU you would recommend?
>>
>>45578024
All thinkpads have Intel cpus and frankly AMD laptop cpus are not very great anyway. I was only wondering why you'd ask for an i5 cpu, last generation Core 2 Duo cpu's are pretty much on par with first gen i5 ones.

If you want mobility, you'll want an x-series laptop - that'll be one of the X2-series, or perhaps X3-series if you're interested.

X200 runs the coolest of all the X2-series laptops, and its got a decent c2d-cpu - however, due to larger cpu architecture, it uses more power and the battery lasts less than with newer models. X220 has great battery life for sure.

X201 and X200 appear to be pretty much identical on the outside - only difference is i5 in x201 vs core 2 duo in X200. They sport 16:10 screens, led-moels may come with 1440x900 resolution - however, the screen is pretty crappy. Colors appear washed out, the contrast is low and the screen brightness is low. The display can be changed - I have an x200 and changed the display myself, it was easy, however it drove the total costs up by 80 €.

X220 screen is much nicer in terms of brightness and colors, however, it comes at 16:9 aspect ratio with 1366x768 resolution, which is disliked by many, myself included. It's also got a pretty powerful i5 sandy bridge cpu, which packs noticeably more kick than x200 and x201. Rather irrelevant if you don't need that from a laptop, though.

Obviously, the newer the model you get, the more it will cost you.

Yeah. It was sold as "a 32GB SSD". I only noticed it when it stopped working a few months after the "warranty" provided by the informal seller from whom I bought it. I knew it was IDE, I bought it because I carry my notebook around a few bumpy roads a lot, my last HDD didn't last.

>>
>>45579496
using CF cards in place of 1.8mm hdds in x4X thinkpads isn't uncommon because there's a performance boost to be gained. Generally, with a good CF card you'll still get years of life out of it. A bit sneaky of the seller, but not much can be done now.

You want help but are too fucking stupid to post your MODEL and tag number off the bottom, which tells me you went here first instead of using a search engine which tells me you need to change how you do shit.

Go to Lenovo and download the service manual. They are wonderful. You can also find teardown videos on Youtube.

Remove your hard drive, plug it into a USB adapter, and rescue your work.

Where is the backup of your novel? Better put it in the cloud somewhere.

Question. How DARE you just use computers for play and not make the first thing you do learning how they WORK? You had time to uselessly "rice" your desktop but were too lazy to learn how shit works.

You may now give me an e-rimjob for the spoon feeding.

I could have told you WHICH USB adapter to use but you were too precious to mention the model number so I could figure that out. Most drives come out after removing one cover screw. Google "Thinkpad (model number) hard drive replacement".

Everything about computers is on the internet. Don't guess, find the fuck out efficiently.

Check the condition of the battery first.

In Lenovo's Power Manager, go to Advanced, and then go to the Battery tab. It should say "Design capacity" (how much it's supposed to be) and "Full charge capacity" (how much it can do now).

You can find genuine batteries on Amazon for $75 if you don't mind paying the premium.

Are any budget R-series able to match up to T-series buiild quality or close, or are they all junk?
>>
>>45584182
Early R series models were made by Acer, so stay away from R30 to R4x
also
>R30 is identical to the A2x and T2x
>R4x is idendical to the A3x and T30, careful, few of those sport 13" XGA screens...

Although R series are always talked down upon, the R50p sported a QXGA screen that the T41p lacked.
They are a bit heavier and made out of plastic, but the thick plastic had made them as durable as its thinner titanium brother.
Careful, I don't know which R5x had IPS screens, but if its 15" and UXGA, its probably IPS

R60 doesn't have an IPS screen so don't get a 15" SXGA+ and expect that, because I did and it sucks.
I have to say, I did really like using an 14" R61 at home, but I rather take a T400 if I was out and about.

I've yet to experience a R400 or R500.

Generally R-Series are the slightly thicker, almost a pound heavier, hardened plastic brother of the T-Series.
But parts can be exchanged with them like the RAM, CPU, mobo, screens, the frame, bottom base and palmrest aren't compatible last time I checked. Depends what model you get, but the fans, keyboards, LCD ribbon cables, ultrabays can be swapped.

I'd recommend an R61 if its cheap, R5x if you want a slow pentium model. But given the latter costs about the same as its younger brother, I wouldn't recommend it if you were stretching your dollar as best as you can.

But if you are going to be taking it everywhere, the T400 w/ integrated graphics may be a better model to get, DDR3 ram is still cheaper and its somewhat light.
