Island style keyboards are probably here to stay. The next generation of T series and X series are allegedly going to return to dedicated TrackPoint buttons, however.

Pic related: simpler times
>>
>>45526581
Arguably there's nothing wrong with the chiclets design. I'm going to say that most people on /g/ can type on their keyboard without looking at it so why would it bother you?

The real problem is the keyboard layout which has been utterly fucked.

The removal of the trackpoint buttons is a step back in usability. The clickpad takes a stupid amount of force to activate and it's really quite fatiguing to use, not to mention the loud noise.

Removing the status LEDs was a step back as well, how can I see if my disk is just being thrashed vs. a complete lock up.

The lack of inner metal rollcage is also a step back for durability, along with the use of soldered RAM.

How hard is to fix a IBM X40?

I'm planning on buying a "wont turn on" Thinkpad X40 w/charger and everything. Seems like its a hard drive problem.

Is it worth the 20 bucks?
>>
>>45527148
if it doesnt power on, then how can it be a HDD related problem?
>>
>>45527191
the description was vague. The vendor says it powers on, but then it crashes and doesn't load windows.
I read on the wiki that X40 are prone to hard drive failures because they use 1.8" drives.

>>
>>45527647
-Enterprise grade durability
-Modular design makes repairs fairly simple
-Affordability of used/refurb models on eBay
-Vintage aesthetic with roots to the early 90s that /g/ users connect with

Basically they are the anti-MacBook, although this has become less true over the years as Lenovo has bastardized the ThinkPad line with "me too" MacBook features (huge trackpad, island style keyboard, function key nonsense).
>>
>>45527647
It's a meme, Elitebooks are better in every way
>>
>>45527647
Jesus fuck all these newfags who can't bother to research on their own. But fine, I'll spoonfeed you this once:

Pros:
>used ThinkPads are cheap
>good *nix support
>T, X and W series have amazing build quality
>very modular with many aftermarket parts to choose from

Cons:
>older models have outdated hardware that are prone to failure
>some models can be pretty heavy if you're a limpwristed faggot
>looks boring/ugly (subjective)

Note that newer ChinkPads with chiclet keys, clickpad and no trackpoint buttons have much lower build quality and are considered not "true" ThinkPads

Lurk moar if you wish to truly comprehend /g/'s fetish over this line of machines
>>
>>45527793
>HP

Enjoy your housefire
>>
>>45527815
>looks boring/ugly

I've never understood this downside. Thinkpads are IMO beautifully designed because they have such a strong design statement that they make themselves immediately recognizable. They're on the same level as mbp or mba but the antithesis of their design philosophy.
>>
>>45527926
It looks boring and ugly if you buy into the marketing that Mac has the best aesthetics.

To me the beauty of a thinkpad is a machine that looks serious and is ready to do serious work. Computers are tools, not toys.
>>
>>45526686
But T440p doesn't have soldered ram. It's the T440, T440s and X240 that have it.

So coming from the previous thread and the keyboard question >>45527811
Is it really about the layout more than anything?
>>
>>45528162
The feel. ThinkPad keyboards (even the post 2012 island style) have a tremendous tactile feel to them. There really isn't anybody who comes close to topping the ThinkPad keyboard even in 2014.
>>
should I go for it /tpg/

>>
>>45528291
I suggest you wait until T450 line pops up next year and a buy a used T420 or X220 if you want that USB 3.
>>
>>45528162
Yes it is just the layout.

From the Sandy Bridge line to the Ivy Bridge (first gen with chiclet) they use the same exact switches underneath the key caps.
>>
>>45528671
Kinda waiting for that now, not going to need one for alteast another 3 months so i'm really hoping the price on a T420 with a 1600x900 panel drops down.

Elsewhere i'm going for a Dell E6420, since there isn't enough of a difference between in them terms of reliabilty and hardware.
>>
>>45526685
Where do you get your carbon fiber, and do they give out free samples? I only need enough to cover my trackpad.

On another note, Captchas are different now? I can on;y see them with Appchan off, and I only had to click a button
>>
What's a fair price for a X301?
>>
>>45528856
Wouldn't it more economical to buy a T420 with a lower quality panel and buy the 1600x900 panel separately that you would then install yourself?
>>
>>45526273

>>
>>45528915
Also true, however if one does pop out with a decent price on it i don't mind.

If it saves me two hours of tinkering with it's all the better.
>>
>>45528856
Except the E6420s are ugly as can be with that disgusting orange border around the keyboard.
>>
can anybody here speak to the accuracy of the fingerprint reader on the t420?

I plan to use it instead of entering my password for things like sudo, but the one other time i used a finger-print reader for this it was hit or miss and not very consistent, even when i did the exact same motion with my finger
>>
let him buy the dell... less demand for thinkpad then it's better for our thinkpad circlejerks... bringing the price down.
>>
>>45528162

>>45526686 here, yes the layout kills what is truly the best laptop keyboard in the market hands down.

Honestly, I'm going to say in terms of solidity and tactile feel it beats the old style keyboards hands down.

Also soldered RAM is inexcusable when Dell and HP are shipping equivalent laptops with 2 SODIMM slots.

HP has made a crime by not making a newer laptop with the customize options similar to that of 2570p. It's a beast, upgradeable from dual core to quad core, two ram slots, 100whr battery for those 12 hour work times and 20 hours of idle, can set up a RAID 0. The only bad point is the screen.

What a beast in such a small package.
>>

>>
I've owned a T43,T60,T61,T400,T410,T420,T430, and T440p. The T440p feels just as solid as the T420/30 and in some ways (USB placement for example) it is superior. T430 has its USB3 ports in a hard to reach place where some connectors won't fit.

I use the trackpoint exclusively and adjusting to the touchpad buttons actually was fairly easy. It feels okay and is only marginally worse than the traditional buttons. I'm glad they are likely returning with the *50 line but I could get over it if they didn't.

What I dislike most is the function keys. Screwing with the fn key is a real bummer.
>>
>>45528291

>>45529787 here, I'm thinking about getting the T440p. Overall it sounds like you're happy with your purchase. Would you recommend it out of the thinkpad lineup?
>>
>>45529851
fucked up quoting since 4chan x is kill and I'm not used to the bare bones site, sorry about that
>>
>>45529851
Yeah it is the best you're going to find if you are looking for a classic ThinkPad. The build quality is solid. Parts are easily upgraded via a single big back panel which is held by two screws. Traditional hinges. Ultrabay. Oh and nother thing that has improved from the T430 is that the speaker grills are no longer on facing upwards waiting to be filled with dust.

It's a well built business laptop with some disappointing but bearable compromises in the TrackPoint department.

I bought a T420 for $340 AU last week. i5 2540M, NV 4200M graphics, 900p screen. Great condition. Just gotta hunt around for them.

Mind you they told me the screen was 1366x768 so I did get a good deal in that regard.
>>
>>45531100
Same thing happened with my X61 tablet, which claimed it was 1024*768. Best of all, the screen was the X60's model that doesn't have adhesive in it.

Can anyone give me a hand? I have this laptop and I'll be getting a Series 3 dock in a couple of days which will have a monitor attached to the DP and a monitor attached to the DVI. How would I go about automatically enabling those monitors with xrandr and disabling the internal laptop monitor (I'd rather keep it closed). I'm running Arch.
>>
>>45531299
If you're on wireless rather than a wired network, your wifi signal will go to shit if you close the laptop. Just something to note.

Also, if you haven't already bought the dock, try looking for a Mini Dock Series 3 *Plus*. It's a little wider but it has two DP, two DVI, and an eSATA port.

They usually only go for a little more over the non-Plus docks.
>>
>>45531443
Yeah I bought the dock yesterday, I'll only be connecting 2 monitors and I don't use eSATA so wouldn't make use of it anyway. In Ausland the Plus docks go for quite a lot more too, I bought my non-plus for $75.

Stick with Windows 7.

You can get an "Ultrabay hard drive caddy" to replace your CD drive, and stick a second drive in there.

But if you're going to swap an SSD into it, you should probably stick that in the main drive bay in case you actually need the CD drive for something...

Flipping working ones would probably score at least $30 after shipping and costs via eBay... it depends.
I'd take them for that much if the LCDs are in good condition and if there are at least 8 working units.
If you are able to get the TYPE numbers on them and find out what they are spec'd from the factory, I'd go for it. You'd don't want to end up with only XGA/WXGA machines, might get lucky on a SXGA+ or WUXGA unit. You can resell those for a pretty penny imo.

If you have an HDD with an OS installed, you might be lucky to sell them for $80+, more so on the batteries working great.
