Has anybody ever bought a thinkpad here and only then discovered it had a locked bios?

Only reason I haven't bought one yet is fear of that happening.
>>
is 400-500 bucks a good price for a W520 with 4gigs of ram and a 160gb ssd?
>>
Is there any real reason to shell out money for a thinkpad if I have a perfectly good few laptops here already?
>>
>>45474173
depends what prompted the question
>>
>>45474033
Look for one where there's a picture of the computer's specifications in bios. You won't be able to view the specs if it's locked.

Ask the seller to take picture if there's none present.

Had a thinkpad as a kid, T series. Slow as fuck now. Thinkpads seem very intriguing to me. I like having separate systems for things, hence my gaming/fun laptop and my school laptop. Been wanting to install gentoo and figured I wanted an ultimate nerd laptop for all things tech and science.
>>
>>45474262
I got my 420 a few weeks back. I love it. Got it used (of course), ebay, no OS for 190.
Huge upgrade from my Dell my Grandpa bought me way back when for 400. The thinkpad has a beautiful i5 and my own ram-sticks totaling 8gb.
>>
>>45474293
The one I'm waiting for is 2.5GHz i5, 2GB ram, 160GB HDD, 1600x900 display, no OS. $220
I have an intel 730 and a 4GB ram stick in the mail as well, should turn out fine
>>
>>45474285
they do have some cool stuff. hackability is to the max, and parts are easy to find cheaply. if you have $200 lying around, it's not a bad option.
>>
>>45474033

my 2nd thinkpad t400 i bought of a fat dude off of craigslist had a locked bios. He said he bought a storage lock and it didn't come with an adapter and the battery was running low. I bought it for $60. Fuck around trying to unlock it. Ended up I didn't have the skills to it. I swap out the keyboard (since it was newer) and swap out a dvd-rom/writer. Since I had a beat up old T400 laying around that need a new keyboard and only a DVD-ROM. After i swap those things out I ended up selling it on craigslist for also $60. :)
>>
>>45474325
I tend to try to get the best system possible and go to the max, which is a very bad habit of mine. I was looking at w series, though from the posts I've seen, and since I'm only going to use it for programming and nothing more intensive than what /g/ would consider heavy. Would t series be a better choice?
>>
>>45474351
X are the light ones.
>>
>>45474392
My impulse is telling me I wouldn't be doing myself justice if I went with the x series. To be honest it seems the t420 might be an alright choice. Which do you have? I'm becoming nostalgic for the keyboard and red dot.
>>
eBay used X220 for $375. Came with Ultrabay series 3 dock w/ optical drive. Specs are i5 2540m 2.6Ghz, 128gb SSD, 8gb ram, fp reader, assuming TN panel since they didn't specify.

Supposed to get here next Wednesday. this fucking wait................

There are no good used Thinkpads T-series in my country. If I'm looking for a computer for at least 5 years should I buy new Thinkpad T-series? Not the current ones, but the next generations.

>>45474494
>>45474456
that is actually a different anon, but i also got an x201, tablet. the fact that it only works with the pen is actually nice. it isn't underpowered, either, even if it is a watered down i7.
>>
>>45474654
18+ hours sounds sexy, though I usually use my laptops as a portable desktop. My battery life quickly becomes non existent because I keep them plugged in all the time. The only laptop I use as a laptop is my school one. Plus, something tells me I'll always feel disappointed looking at a small screen on the x series, hence myself leaning towards the t series (that w series with the extended display seems sexy but oh so expensive).

Take off keyboard, take off palmrest, stick SSD into slot, put in 1 screw, re-assemble.

Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes, and as long as you're careful with taking off the keyboard and palmrest, you won't face much trouble.

Protip: When taking off the keyboard, push against the plastic bar with the power button and the volume controls to slide it up. If you push against the keys you risk inadvertently taking them off.

>>
>>45475278
I stick two flathead screwdrivers under the bottom edge of the keyboard and just push it forward. At least the first few times anyways, now it slides forward easy enough to just push on the keys.

But yeah, putting an mSATA SSD in an X220 is very simple and easy, just make sure you have a spare M2x3 screw to screw down the SSD.

Alternatively you could use one of the 5 screws out of the palm rest and replace that later, same size. Or take one from where the upper bezel is screwed down to the motherboard, there's like four and it's pretty unnecessary, but those are the same size too. Or salvage an old dead laptop, which is what I did.

Sub 12" ThinkPads aren't known for their thinnes.
X120e is one of the last small 11" ThinkPads, I think there might be an Edge 11" model but I don't know its durability.

X13x and X14x models have a rubber bumper around the lid and are thicker than the X120e. They are a bit tough despite being made of plastic but I think they are the same size or thicker than a X220/X230.
Granted I thought the X130e was a decent model for the price, if I wanted a sub $150 lappy that had at least 5 hours of use, I'd get one of those again, was nice but I wouldn't say great comparing to my other models I own.

Are the new X240s worth it? I have about 1800€ for a new laptop that i intend to replace my X200. I will use it for a good couple of years, so i expect it to last. I have heard they are not as good, so i am open to alternatives.

>>
>>45477008

x230 is ok if you can stand the chicklet keyboard and 16:9, x220 is ok if you can stand the 16:9

what kind of battery life are you looking for? you should know by the way that they will never get the advertised battery life, if you get an x220 / x230 you can always extend the battery life with a slice battery (not available for the x240)

My x61t, got it off of Ebay 2 years ago for like 100€ shipped I think.
I really like the portability and the swivel screen is pretty cool as well.

Specs are a bit low though, might have to make the switch to ubuntu for my webbrowsing and watching stuff. Firefox starts hanging often with multiple tabs.

I hardly play games on this one anymore anyway, except for some HoMM3.

Surprisingly my dad's friend has worked for IBM IL for the past 13 years and has a W701ds.

Now before i started browsing /g/ i had no idea how much that thing was worth so i'm still in a bit of shock when he even allowed me to use it for a small while. too bad he's quite the jerk but he did give me an old thinkpad back in 06 so he's fine by my book.

Also >>45478696 ynetshops have more or less the same prices as ebay+delivey, but they do grant warranty so it's a rather nice option.
Still got about a month till the paycheck+bonuses kick in so i gotta think whether can i afford the x220 or simillar dell or go for the x200.

Well its like when you weight gold and see how much is it per ounce, with the w701ds being the heaviest of them all.

It comes with a secondary display, pen digitizer,a really strong chipset ,incredible build quality, and other premium features-and all that fetches a ridiculously high price tag.

Then again they are rare as fuck since chinknovo knew not a lot of people would even buy such a thing.

You can boot and view the settings if a supervisor password is set, just that you can't change anything.
The one which won't let you boot is the power on password - that one is a lot easier to remove. Pull the internal and external batteries then cycle the machine without the batteries.

The supervisor password however is rather difficult and requires trickery involving opening up the machine and dumping the bios. Then all sorts of fucking around with newer models.

I want to get a X220 tablet as my laptop, probably just going to throw arch on it, maybe try gnome with the touch screen.

But i was wondering if you guys had any opinions on how the graphics perform (specifically with videos in a browser), or if there are any issues with the X220 like overheating or whatever. The HD 3000 Integrated is better than what i am currently using (GM965), but i would just like to be sure)

Overall i am torn between the x220 and a t420, any suggestions?

I've heard lots of issues with X220t like digitizer, CPU throttling and ghosting issues so I chose T420 over it. While T420 isn't perfect (loose palm rest, crumply volume buttons, etc.) overall it's a good machine.

I went from a T420 to an X220t.

No there is no issues with it overheating, unless you cover up the vents.

The integrated graphics are fine, my T420 and X220t both had the same specs, i5-2520m and HD 3000 graphics.

Only thing I miss from the T420 is that it was a little more sturdy (two hinges instead of one, overall thicker, and a latch). It was also easier to grab because you could grab it from every side, X220's and pretty much all X-series, the keyboard spans from one side to the other, so you can only grab them from the front and the back. The palm rest on non-tablets slopes down at the edge, on tablets it's a hard edge, that was kind of sucky to get used to.

Also my T420 had longer battery life since it had a 9-cell battery and X220t's can only go up to 6-cell, but for my personal uses it gives me enough battery life.

I've had an x200 for a few years now and have used it way more than I thought I would. I originally got for doing business on the road; I needed something light and with good battery life.

At first I used it only for work, but over time I found myself choosing it all the time. The smaller form factor is really just superior. Being able to unplug the machine and move around with it easily simply results in being able to use it more often and in more diverse situations. The smaller size and better battery life results in more desirable usage patterns. I think for a laptop the size/battery of the x-series makes the most sense.
