You are all a bunch of lying little shits.
I just got a Macbook Pro and it is clearly superior.
This is not a shill thread or a troll thread. This is a OS X customization thread, the only itch I have from my Linux days that still needs scratching.

OS X ricing doesn't exist. The ones you see in desktop threads only make their desktops look pretty. Everything else is either stock or an inconsistent mix of stock and whatever they're using.
Even changing the fucking UI flair to graphite ruins the consistency.

Other than that, OS X is very nice.

Along with 256 colors, tabs, UTF-8 support, selectable scrollback buffer settings without needing to restart, live theming and keybinds so you don't have to look up colorcodes manually, and so on. urxvt needs patches for UTF-8, 256 colors and tabs.

I agree, even multi platform programs like VLC and uTorrent look better on OS X and fit in with the theme, uTorrent didn't even have ads when I tried it.
There are some distros like Ubuntu and elementary that have very well put together themes and default programs that look almost as seamless as OS X, but honestly it doesn't bother me that much.
I also liked that Yosemite used all of the available RAM unlike Windows and GNU/Linux.

Right now I'm using Mint and it's it's a joy to use, Cinnamon applets are useful, and the OS is just sitting there in the background with everything exactly where you expect it to be.
I only with the UI was as smooth as Windows and OS X, and that there were linux versions of my favourite Windows programs.

The majority of OS X is opensource.
https://opensource.apple.com/
Enough that you can have a fully working system from what Apple has released alone. The only closed sourced components are the UI components which can be supplemented with X and core Audio which can be supplemented with an audio server of your choice.

The kernel and userland are all there and there's macports for your software needs.

That's not a good solution to the problem, Windows is the only OS that has to restart for all OS updates, not just kernel ones but all. Sometimes it needs to restart for userland software, this is just unacceptable.

OS X has a lot of handy features, my favorites are quicklook and spotlight. Spotlight lets you easily learn where a command in an application is, you can then use your mouse to select it, learn the keybind for it or just use your applications like some kind of cli interface where you type all your commands. Nice and versatile.

I really like Apple as a company. The reason the products are so good is precisely because Apple has strong values around quality, attention to detail and refusal to compromise. The majority of people (though not all) on here are very strange people. Most of them are socially dysfunctional. Many don't have regular employment or money, so they are forced to use lower tier computers and gadgets. I would say with a pretty high degree of confidence that most people here have never slept with a girl.

These people HATE those who they perceive to be successful in life, or even those who are just relatively normal (hence the term "normalfag"). They seethe with jealous rage and live their entire lives festering in bitterness at those who get to enjoy emotions such as happiness and triumph and companionship in their lives. This is why they hate Apple. Apple are the ultimate symbol of everything that the /g/ dweller despises - success, being socially well-adjusted, enjoying life, etc.

So yeah. My advice to you is this: get out of here while you can.

SMPlayer has been a good enough video player, just a little bit buggy, and I still prefer PotPlayer as it has a lot more features and customizability.
I don't need something as minimalist as mpv, and bloat doesn't bother me that much since I have a decent machine SSD and all.
>>
I've got a 2011 Macbook. Paid extra for the matte screen and everything. It's nice except the sd card reader broke and started just scratching cards after about 5 uses, and the eject key is all soft and weird now but it still works. Osx works but there are so many little thing that Linux and Windows does but it doesn't which can be fucking infuriating. Constant beach balling with the new osx unless you have an ssd, the fucking home and end keys don't do anything with Apple text editors, and a bunch of other stupid shit that doesn't make any sense.

I will never understand why if you have an external mouse plugged in, just moving the mouse will wake it up from sleep, but if the thing is on and the display is asleep you have to physically click to get that up.

Osx is fine, but apple shills are some of the worst around.
>>

It's the same as any other *nix system with X so you could leverage an Arch or Gentoo guide. For OS X specifically I forget how you disable aqua and boot right into Xquartz since I don't like that myself but I know it's easily doable, Google around. If you want a native tiling WM for OS X there's Amethyst but people say it's not that great.

An example for openbox woulkd be to, install it, then put this in your ~/.xinitrc
exec openbox-session
then startx

What? It can and will prompt you to save multiple files at one time, that's the entire issue. If you have 2 or more revisions of the file you don't know which one it's targeting. How are you not understanding this?

Furthermore it doesn't even show up near the window, at the vert least why doesn't it spawn within the bounds of the window it's attached to? If you close multiple documents you can't tell which is which, webm related.

As a Windows user I couldn't give two shits about OS X's flaws. I'm more concerned about the fact they fixed this issue with explorer but didn't fix it system wide. If you attempt to open a directory that's already opened in a new window it will just raise the old window. Meanwhile any other application will spawn a new instance and let you make conflicting changes then throw confusion at you if you try to close all workspace windows.

Why not be annoyed with an issue that is easily fixed? You're treating it like it doesn't exist at all.

Not all closed source software has monetary value but does have intrinsic merit. As for the freedom to modify and redistribute someone elses product, that's a whole different issue. Of course, but it's their choice if they want to do that.

I thought I did.

qtdev and Vim are not a suitable replacement for xcode. I personally use Vim as my editor and xcode for my analyzer and debugger.

Photoshop being not exclusive is not a valid point here when the person is suggesting GNU as an alternative, i.e. a platform that does not have that product.

Ardour seems like just another DAW.
Lightworks is trash imo and kdenlive is not an applicable alternative considering its simplicity compared to other editors in this scope.

All of this is highly subjective, the initial objective point is that OS X can run all of that where GNU cannot. The gain here is that you have the choice to pick what you like regardless of what it is, with GNU you're limited to a smaller selection of software you may or may not like.

Fair enough?

I didn't care so much about FOSS/OSS until working in software and seeing how fucking stupid it is the way we operate. Companies profit off of restricting the user as much as possible. That is why consoles are so important, that is why tablets are so important. A closed platform lets Microsoft charge Xbox owners owners to watch Netflix. It allows for preferential treatment of Internet Exploder (would not exist if not bundled). The company I worked at was trying to pull the same shit just at a smaller scale: price our product low but control the platform so that people have to go through us and pay to get anything done. Additionally, a massive amount of programmer effort is wasted on encryption and bullshit to make sure people can't get our content for free. All of this bullshit is only possible due to proprietary licenses, otherwise the customer could manhandle what they bought however they wanted.

In this case you can present the argument that going FOSS/OSS is dangerous because the company loses profit. But often it costs the business nothing. They should open source by default, and only stop when there's an obvious reason not to.

Idk man writing closed source code just feels gross to me, almost makes me not want to develop software, knowing it's only used to fuck people over, and they're so oblivious to it
>>
>>45467678
I'm not saying I approve of the decision to close source your software nor do I approve of such tactics, I'm simply saying I will not write something off just because it is as such. Practicality trumps all for me and many. The more important overlying thing is that I care about the authors freedom to do so, they have the right to make that choice and I'm not going to cast judgment on their products for their personal choices, I judge the product on usefulness at the time only.
>>
>>45467771
>anthropomorphizing businesses like a fucking furry
Companies are not people and so do not have "personal choices", they're strictly business choices aimed to maximize profits. You're protecting executive's pockets, not programmers. We would love to be allowed to open source our code.

(I'm exaggerating my stance on this topic but I'm bored)
>>

Sorry for late reply, but I do not understand this. When you set up windows, you can let it know to inform you of updates, but allow it to let you pick which ones to install. I also don't see how it functions better. It runs smooth yeah, but so does windows. So can you tell me where it runs smoother? Quite interested in knowing.

So is it just mainly for programmers? I understand that this whole virus thing has to do with it as well, seeing as UNIX is more secure. But is that about it, or am I missing something?

That is rather impressive, but I can do that in Windows as well, and it looks better, with the fraction not being in that manner, as well as the limit. I do tons of reports for my structure class and my physics class, and I have always used MS Word, which works fine, and looks better than that. But I will not deny that it would be useful if they changed the manner in which it was used. It is impressive.
