No.

Cellphone numbers are just hard to rebember. We are in the 21 century. There's no reason to be using numbers.

Theres a good reason because DNS exist...
>>
>>45440499
Because the identifiers have to be guaranteed to be unique
>>
>>45440583
Okay. thousands of people take the good names like "candy"

then all that is left is names like " NKJUORIDF"
thats not easier to remember.

Yeah, because that happened with email right?
>>
>>45440599
Yea. Skype and others are full of 'NKJUORIDF' nicknames.

Im arguing with morons.

>what is legacy

Seriously if you're not a retard and are genuinely interested on this subject it's because of how technology develops through the years. Things are always going to change and new concepts will be introduced but it's not always economically sound to replace years of development just for a new concept. What we do is build upon this technology until it's more reasonable to start from scratch. Unfortunately that's not always the case and that's why we now have bloated systems such as the web and to an extend mobile communications.
>>
Instead of using nick names or numbers, why can't we all be anonymous?
>>
>>45440671
Neither of us said that, idiot.

The vast majority of people have at least one email address. Most of the people I know have legible email address that involve their name, an object or a concept

How are mobile phones any different?

Are you seriously calling people morons when you just said 'the whole entire world' get a load of dis guy

Legacy support. Cellphones have to be accessible by the old phone infrastructure, so maintaining the same number format is nice.

You can always do new stuff with VoIP.

>call anonymous
>everyone in the world picks up
Uhh
>>

>>45440641
It doesn't address the issue of needing a unique identifier to route the data to. Skype has it's own system, and email relies on DNS being able to resolve the unique IP of the mail server.

If you did the same thing for phone numbers, you would still need a unique identifier to route the call, whether that is the MSISDN, IMSI, or what have you. Basically OP wants to add a "vanity name" to make it easy to remember a unique identifier, which is a function that is already done by your contact list on your phone.
