There's a definite reason to have a laser with much more than a few standard watts of power, and "so you don't aim them at planes" isn't good enough of a reason to get rid of them.

Want to know how I know you're an idiot. You don't know what an assault weapon is, to be an assault weapon to has to be an intermediate rifle cartridge with selectable automatic fire or burst fire. You cannot buy a new one of these in the united states, you can only buy ones manufactured in the 80s and earlier. So no, you can't just go buy an assault weapon.
