how long before 20TB hard drives?

does moores law still apply?
>>

Moore's law applies to microprocessors you fuckwit.
>>
>>45372690
>implying a hard drive doesn't contain a microprocessor
>>
>>45372678
who cares
SSD's are going to replace mechanical shitdrives
>>
>>45372697
Just get out.

>>45372734
>yfw HHDs will never be replaced and SSDs will never have more capacity than HDDs

>being this uneducated
>>
>>45372805
that's a real retarded assumption
>>

Alright asshole, how long before 20TB SSDs?
>>
>>45372806
>asks for storage increase (therefore, magnetic platters and not microprocessors)
>GUISE MOORE'S LAW ZOMG
>Gets analdestroyed
>durr uneducated xDD

Either you understand nothing about Technology or you're a retard. Either way, fuck off.

about a week.

Briefly saw a 1tb ssd for about 2000 dollars.

you mean $350?

HDDs are nearing their physical limit, while SSDs are still going down in price.

So probably no. But there are TB SSDs right now, and most SSDs are just laptop HDD cases less than half full of flash memory chips.

By the end of the decade expect 3.5 SSDs with 32 or 64 terabyte capacities, for less than 50 dollars.
>>
>>45372678
If projections from the industry turns out to be true, at least 5-6 years.

mfw.

so guys, on the topic of harddrives. is there literally no difference between these 2?

NAND is closer to it's physical limit than HDDs. HAMR and helium filling promise (realistically) 30-60TB for 3.5" HDDs. We'll never see 64TB SSDs with NAND
>>
>>45372899
I hope so, I don't want to scale my 30 tb hdd array further, it'd be a god send if I can transfer that onto to a pair of ssds in raid 1.
>>
>>45372931
Even if it's nearing physical limits, most SSD cases are empty space. You could easily stuff more chips in there. Or just add more drives.

Unlike HDDs, SSDs don't need as much energy.

They'll probably get completely replaced by SSD within 15 years, because SSD are advancing much faster than HDD now. Currently, HDD are still the most bang for your buck if you are storing lots of data, but for just typical usage, we've already surpassed the point where the average consumer wouldn't even need an HDD. There were 480GB SSD for under $200 today, that's amazing. Pretty soon we'll have 1TB SSD in the sub-$200 range. Can't wait. Though to be honest, I wish we'd have come out with affordable terabyte optical discs by this point. It's probably too late now.
>>
>>45372954
You still need PCB for the NAND chips, there is a limit to how many chips you can fit in a 2.5" enclosure. That said, it's all about price. Nothing seems to point towards NAND closing in on HDD in price/GB. So we're stuck with HDDs for mass storage for at least another 5-10 years, sadly.

>>45372931
Don't even get me started with helium. That shit is non-renewable. We'd have to mine it out of Jupiter or the fucking Sun to get more. Yet here we are wasting on shit like BALLOONS. FUCKING BALLOONS.
>>
>>45373027
Meh, maybe we can finally get interested in space exploration once running out of helium is a real threat.
Problem is we'd probably needs lot of helium to get there....

Where the M.2's at. Honestly.
