>Comfort
Comfort is subjective. I own the hf5. I use them daily for commuting and I have no major issues with comfort. I do sometimes use different tips, depending on what situation I'm in. Some are more isolating than others. Tips are use are the Ety triple flange, Comply Tx-100 and Westone Stars.

>Long cable
It depends on how tall you are I suppose. You can use after market cables.

If you have doubts about spending so much on something you may not like, get the hf5 first. That's what I did. I never regretted it. When these eventually give up and die, which probably won't be for a while, they've stood up to daily use very well, I'll be getting an ER4PT. Pic is hf5 with triple flange.

MDRV6 ($50) vs XPT 100 ($80)

I'm looking for something that is isolated and comfy to wear. I'll mainly be using them for long hours of video games and music with the occasional movie/anime.

Home use only so forget portability. Also I don't know what I really want when it comes to sound since these would be my first non-shit headphones; I guess I'd like bass to be there but not overpowering like skullcrusher/beats.

Or should I just save up some more and get something in the $100-200 range?

So are these placebo shit? Do I need closed backs to get nice bass? I'm trying to spend under $150 and I'm not too picky, would the Audio Technica ATH-AD700X be a bad decision? I've had a couple Audio Technica products in the past so I feel comfortable with them as a brand.
>>
>>45370117
HD600 unless you're ultra-sensitive to upper mids and treble.
>>45370220
HD598 is more neutral/balanced, X1 is better for bassheads.
>>45370607
They have great bass response it's just not boosted. It's definitely there and present and powerful when it needs to be, it's just not the dominant focus of the sound like it is with some headphones.
>>
>>45371342
You don't need closed back for nice bass but getting those will give you nobass. Sennheiser HD558s would be open and give you some bass, HD518 more bass and DT990s even more with a very V-shaped frequency response.

>>
>>45371490
>will I be missing anything with the scooped freq response?
Significant chunks of the frequency range of most instruments and vocals. So yes. You'll be missing a lot. Most people will also find the DT990's strongly boosted treble to be irritating and fatiguing after a while. I wouldn't recommend those.
>>
>>45371477
Very little. In general, the open Audio-Technicas are one of the least bassy headphones on the market. Very steep roll-off in the lows. I'd get the HD558s.

>>45371490
You'll miss the mids because the headphones are very v-shaped. Lots of bass, lots of highs and recessed mids. My preference for tonality is as neutral as possible most of the time so I personally wouldn't get the DT990s. Either HD558s or spend a little more for the DT880s which are very neutral and comfortable.

It depends on what you listen to and what you want to hear. I find them lacking for vocals. For the amount of "no mids" shitposting that these headphones attract, I was surprised by the amount of mids they actually had when I got them. I recently wrote a more detailed posts about them, look it up in the archives if you want to read more of what an actual owner of these headphones thinks of them.

Also the v6 is at 50 dollars so if you want a closed headphone instead you might consider that. I think I like the v6 better than the m50 because of the mids is sharp compare to the recess mid of the m50 and because I listen to a bunch of weeb songs.

Sennheiser HD 558 or Sony MDR-7506 ?
>>
>>45371707
X1 if you want a slightly bassy but otherwise balanced sound, K7XX if you want boosted midbass, upper mids and treble at the expense of everything else.
>>
>>45371640
Those dildos of death are in the 10kHz region which is very high, not that sensitive to our ears anymore(at least not mine). I've heard the DT880s multiple times and the treble isn't nowhere near as bad as people here shipost. Hell even the T90 sounded good for my ears. That said I prefer more "darker" tone and I like my HE-500s a lot... even though I EQd the upper mids and treble up a notch.

The locations of the Beyer treble dildos vary based on measuring equipment used. Headroom shows a 6 kHz spike on the DT880, which is a frequency responsible for sibilance.
Most humans will also perceive a ~6 kHz spike with the DT770/880/990.
>>
>>45371786
Microphones used for measuring these shouldn't throw off the fr that much. I think positioning of the headphones on the dummy head is a larger factor there. But yeah you are right, 6kHz is in the sensitive region.

Beyersremorse is a feeling you will never experience anyway, because you lack the funds the purchase a pair. I know they are valued addition to my collection. >Is the ad900x a good pair of headphones? Are you happy with them?

Yeah they are okay (reason why I'm saying this is because I haven't used it much because my right ear is kinda mess up so I use speaker more now), but I wouldn't buy them if the price is higher than the X1 or hd 598. Just don't buy it any mid range headphone over 200 currently since a lot of other headphone is on sale unless you have an amp and a higher budget. Also ad900x does have enough bass, don't listen to the shills. Depend what music you listen to, if you listen fast pace music it kind of hard to pin point the where the sound is coming from at least in a song like this http://youtu.be/Ok2369YY2P8
>>
>>45371813
>Microphones used for measuring these shouldn't throw off the fr that much.

>>
>>45371901
all beyers do.
>>
SE215 vs XBA-H1 vs RHA MA750

>>
>>45371901
We need measurements. Tyll measured the AKG K701s for burn in which are usually mentioned when people talk about burn in and claiming that those headphones require 100s of hours of use before they are fully "burned in". The differences before and after were minimal, barely showed on measurements and a small offset of the headphones on the dummy head could've been the cause.
>>
>>45371888
with music like

http://youtu.be/KmBaVYfXDns
>>
>>45371901
No dynamic driver headphones have a real burn-in difference attributable to changes in the drivers. Changes in the earpads over time can change the sound of a headphone, though. That being said, most things people attribute to "burn-in" are in fact, as >>45371855 stated, simply people "hearing things" as a result of psychoacoustics. Your brain eventually gets used to how a headphone sounds and that's why people think headphones "burn in."

I don't have any Grados at the moment. They're not something I would really look to spend a lot of money on, if I did I'd probably get the SR80 or the SR125 to have some fun with modding, or prehaps even the Alessandro Music Series One. I don't have a strong opinion on the sound, when I tested a few models, it never grabbed me as something I must have, it didn't disgust me either. So my opinion of Grado is mostly indifference.

I can comfortably spend up to $85~ with a hard limit of $105. I'll be plugging them directly into my motherboard. I need a bit of isolation just to drown out all of the traffic nearby. Looking for full-sized. I'm in the US.

>Preferred Music
I like heavy music with lots of bass and drums. Aside that, I listen to classical regularly.

I'd also advise strongly against brand loyalty or disloyalty in this hobby in particular as just about every brand in this hobby makes some good products and some god-awful products. Going by brand name, whether for or against, is a terrible way to shop in this hobby; you have to critically research and evaluate individual products in this hobby with a blind eye to brand.

I just went with a pair of SoundMAGIC E10 after seeing it in the OP list. I don't know if I was trolled or not, but these are godawful for the price. Mid-highs are extremely powerful and hurt my ears at levels where the rest of the music is at an acceptable volume, and the bass is overpowering and causes distortion.

If this is your idea of pretty great, then what you're looking for is not neutral, it's V-shaped. I'd suggest a Beyerdynamic DT990 if you like the sound of the S4i.

Yeah thanks, but why are the 990's cheaper than 770 and 880? And could you rank those three best to worst?

>>
>>45373016
I tried using my phone instead of my amp. The bass is a bit tighter and doesn't cause any noticeable distortion, but the mid-highs are still seriously overpowering.

>>45373075
I can vouch for the 770 pros being very pleasant to listen to (and very comfy)
>>
>>45373075
The treble can easily be fixed with 5 minutes of equalizing.
>>
>>45373075
They have above neutral treble, but it isn't painful to listen to. Most headphones on the market are V-shaped sounding and most people are just fine with it.
>>
>>45372066
pls respond
>>
>>45373075
>but why are the 990's cheaper than 770 and 880?
Because they're less accurate than the 880 and don't isolate like the DT770 do, so they're not as popular.
>And could you rank those three best to worst?
It's all subjective. Accuracy-wise, DT880 > DT990 > DT770, but if you like the S4i I don't think accuracy is what you're after.
>is the trebble really that painful?
It shouldn't be if you like the S4i. That's an absolutely massive treble spike on that S4i measurement, bigger than anything the DT770/880/990 have. Personally, I'm sitting over here wondering how you can take that treble, but different strokes and all...
I think you'd like the DT990.
>>
>>45373024
>he likes headphones with no fucking mids
>recommend him Beyers
Good recommendation.
>>
>>45373135
The graph looks painful but it really isn't painful, a lot of it might have to do with the bass masking the treble but the Klipsch S4 is a very mainstream and popular product that are enjoyed by listeners who aren't audiophiles, the only people who'd complain about the treble are picky audiophiles. I can imagine that the treble spike will suck with more acoustical music which doesn't have a constant bass rhythm to mask the treble emphasis.

Oh and, don't really take GoldenEars' graphs too seriously, 1/3 octave smoothing is literally a joke.

DT990's mids are recessed compared to the bass and the treble. Some people would say this means it has "no mids." However, your S4i's mids are just as recessed and you like them, so I think you'd like the DT990.

I bought some of those $99 HD598's earlier today. I currently just have onboard audio Realtek ALC887). Would I be better served getting a soundcard or an amp, and if so any suggestions on which?
>>

You need to be aware that the DT990s will require an amp. The 250 ohm and 600 ohm versions will require an amp and the 32 ohm version is not recommended.

Q701's are outside my pricerange but how do you like your dt900's?
And should i buy a fiio E6 with them? Would that be enough to drive them through my iphone? Or should they just stay on my home reciever?
>>
>>45373260
Listen to whatever headphones you have right now through your onboard audio. Do you hear any audible noise (hiss/buzz)? If so, you should probably get an external DAC+Amp before Black Friday/Cyber Monday is over.
However, you probably won't hear any noise. This is good. If this is the case, and it probably will be, wait until you get the headphones. Listen to them. If they are loud enough and you don't hear any noise, you don't need an amp or DAC or soundcard or anything. This will probably be the case. If they're not loud enough you'll need at least an amp. If they're noisy you'll need an external DAC and an amp.

Buy a cheap DAC for your laptop. Most onboard sound cards are shit.
>>
>>45373324
>They may be reccessed, but you can still hear them clearly?
That's a matter of opinion. If you didn't ever think "I wish the mids were louder" when listening to your S4i, you won't ever think that as well when listening to the DT990. The S4i is an extremely V-shaped headphone, and V-shaped by definition means recessed mids. If the recessed mids of the S4i didn't bother you, neither will the recessed mids of the DT990.
>>
>>45373324

>>
>>45373339
>How much of an improvement would they be over my HD 558?
Literally a downgrade in accuracy and soundstage. K702 Anni/K712/K7xx are absolute disasters IMO. They took a fairly well-balanced headphone, listened to people complaining that the earpads weren't sealing well the very first time they used the headphone before giving them time to conform to their head, then needlessly redesigned the earpads, not only giving the headphones too much bass that they never needed in the process but gimping their soundstage by removing the angle from the earpads as well. These three headphones are literally a downgrade from the K702 (and HD558) in terms of accuracy and soundstage.

>Bob Marley - Buffala Soldier
Compared to the V6, the DT990 lack some vocal clarity and Marley's voice lacks that deep richness. The guitars also don't have fullness and twang.

Fall Out Boy - Thriller
Here the DT900s are much better. The drums rumble, the percussion is clear. Every guitar used is easily to distinguish. The V6 still has greater vocal clarity but the guitars are somewhat sterile and grainy.

Bob Dylan - The Times They Are A-Changin'
The rich, throaty vocals are lacking. Harmonica sounds smooth and non peircing.

The Beatles - Rocky Raccoon
I'm honestly suprised by how good the harmonica sounds on the DT990. The vocals like before are missing richness. The V6 doesn't do this track particulary well either. Sounds a bit lifeless.

If you want my honest opinion, I'd get a HD600 or HD650. You want something with warmth and fullness for a more satisfying sound with guitars and rich, smooth male vocals.

Is there any real benefit to using a headphone stand over just laying them gently on my desk? (Besides aesthetics obviously.)

Almost got suckered into buying a rather overpriced one on massdrop to go with my 7xxs that I'm waiting on now, but came to my senses and cancelled it (partially due to concerns about the design and how well it would work with those particular headphones) but thinking of maybe just getting a banana hook for a few bucks on Amazon since it seems like it'd serve the same purpose. But what do you guys think, is it a waste of time? Do you have stands for your headphones?
>>
>>45374466
There have been numerous reports that the way the headphone is place under a stand can significantly improve comfort and marginally increase the sound quality.
