Smartphones are one of those things you don't think are necessary until you have one. It's a handheld computer. You can write shit, browse /g/ wherever the fuck you want, play games while you shit, take pictures of things without bringing a dedicated camera everywhere you go, calculator on the fly, music, etc.
It's everything you could possibly need in an electronic device while you're out and about. You don't have to bring your laptop with you everywhere when you have a smartphone. You don't have to fill up a backpack with various devices because it's in your pocket.
After using smartphones for four years now, I can't imagine going back to a dumb phone. Even my 60 year old parents have smart phones smartphones now.

Muh smartphone has many uses. I buy and sell motorcycles and trucks via Craigslist so GPS plus satellite view ensures I get to target without spending more time and fuel than necessary. Many times the truck I'm collecting from a yard will be in the satellite view. I stay in touch with my mechanicbros via text which beats the shit out of voice comms in a loud body shop. Text has largely replaced email for non-synchronous communication and not just among youngsters. I carry manuals and parts books as .pdfs when I go to motorcycle swap meets, and I can check teh intarweb to price a part or see if it fits my application. My phone lives in RAM X-Grip mounts in my trucks and on my Harley. I grew up long before the internet and cell phones existed and I'm inexpressibly fucking delighted those days are gone. I don't live on my phone, but I use the shit out of it. At home it sits in another RAM mount next to my chair so I can monitor it while using my PCs. I type using a Logitech K810 bluetooth keyboard so I don't have to move the phone or disconnect the charger.

I'd say they're handy to have. I can check my bank account, keep track of my grades, and communicate quickly with other people. I have a Note 4 so I have S Health which let's me keep track of what I eat and my activity level.
It's also nice for entertainment. I use it to browse 4chan and send stupid pictures on Snapchat, as well as kill time with endless runner games. Phones are powerful enough to run Second Life at this point, so I can keep track of my virtual real estate business and see how much I've earned from content I've created.
