Does anyone else miss the cellphone market before the iphone era? So much variety, so many phones for so many different lifestyles. Some were ugly, some were the latest tech and some were just plain weird. Greatest nostalgic feeling would have to be remembering nokia's n series coming out. I wish I got my hands on a n93i, that thing had optical zoom and was a very decent camcorder.for onling having a 3.2 megapixel camera

Or how about all the basic style phones that were out? One reason I'm happy I live in Moscow is because a lot of people have 2 phones here, an android/iphone and a fancy looking outdated gadget. I'm actually using this thing right now since I smashed my s4 to pieces.

And since I don't feel like making a sep thread. I want to get this thing to use as a phone. Would you think it looks weird? it wouldn't be that uncomfortable in your pocket would it?
>>
>>45263968
both those phones look like the current design of graphics cards.
>>
>>45264035
This phone looks like something I want.

I usually don't fall this hard for gimmicks but it looks so futuristic.
>>
It's pretty ironic that after the iPhone all innovation just stopped.
>>
>>45263968
I don't miss it. I enjoyed using smartphones before and after the iPhone came along.

Microsoft killed Windows Mobile after the iPhone was released; that's the thing I do miss.

>>

it's fuckhuge. basically a galaxy note with a bit of extra screen. so no, not really pocketable.
>>
>>45264074
why do people have problems with phone sizes? do you all have female jeans or something?
>>
>>45264067
I had a T-Mobile SideKick II then a III. that OS was absolutely incredible. It had "the cloud" before "the cloud" was even a term that was thrown around. all of the guys over at Danger, Inc. that did the SideKick (HipTop) OS now work for google on the Android team, including Mttias Duarte.
>>
>>45264035
I actually got to hold one of these today, a coworker got one. it's really awkward only having the edge on one side. across the top or bottom would have been better IMO, the assymmetric-ness of it makes it feel weird.
>>
>>45264083
i haven't worn cargo pants since middle school, so yeah
>>
I miss maemo, if the n900 would have been released instead of the garbage n97 and had a capacitive touch screen it could have conquered the world. Ok maybe the UI could have been a little more user friendly but what do you want from a developer device. I could actually open youtube, minimize the window and listen to my song while I do literally anything else on that phone. It was great.
>>
>>45264122
why is this the only thing i see on /g/ concerning pocket sizes
>cargo pants
my jeans fit my HTC One in them perfectly, same with my suit pants and that's easily with room to spare if it was a bigger phone.
>>

I had an HTC MDA Vario, WinMo 6.5. I absolutely dreaded that phone. Resistive touchscreen, tiny things to tap, the stylus itself didn't fit well in the slot and would fall out (I went through at least four while using the thing for a year), and the keyboard was absolutely horrid.
>>
>>45264154
why the fuck would i buy pants that don't fit, some obtuse 90's fashion statement? what the fuck is this, highschool?
I wear normal jeans with normal pockets that fit my normal sized phone in them with no issues. not my fault you buy ill designed skinny jeans or whatever pants don't have pockets in them.
>>
>>45264203
Same here. Normal as fuck Levi's fit my 5.5" Phablet of a OnePlus One with room to spare for keys and a few thumbdrives in the same pocket.

How do people not fit these things in their jeans?
>>
There was a small nokia came in a goldish plastic. Around 2001. Blue backlight with a three line text display.
>>
5'10 skinny Jean wearer here, no problem carrying a 5.5" phone

people who say they can't fit phones in their pockets have either never tried it or have unusually small pockets
>>
If there's one thing I'm jelly of Japs for, it's their cellphone setup/culture (or at least the way it used to be, it's probably changed a lot by now)

>>
>>45264198
>HTC MDA Vario
FUCK THIS PHONE. After a year of having it it just turned to total shit and would just do things on it's own. it would send gibberish texts or call people for no fucking reason
>>
>>45264269
Wait, you had a youtube video running over wifi 3 days ago?

Let me randomly open that same hour long video for you in your pocket over EDGE, on mute, and waste your 250mb of GoPhone data for the month, shall we?

God dammit.
>>
>>45264106
would you say it's more uncomfortable than a regular phone or just that the edge is a total gimmick? Because I'm fine with the edge being useless, I love the way it looks, it's pretty much the only stand out piece of technology I can think of
>>
>>45264134
>>45264143
I'm stil using a n900
>>
>>45264302
It -looks- nice, but the screen is Oleo-phobic and feels slippery on that one side, so you feel like you're gonna drop the fucker. not to mention I can't think of any way to have a case that protects the whole phone because there's an edge that you can't wrap a silicone sleeve around.
>>
>>45264289
fucking htc one with swipe up to unlock. which means if your screen is on when you put it in your pants pocket, your leg could unlock the screen when you put it away.
mine would always start calling random people and texting random letters.
>>
>>45264069
Fuck you, I like having physical keyboard.
>>
I remember being like 10 years old or so and spending time on the nokia website playing with the phone emulators on their page. It was a pretty neat feature actually.
>>
>>45264352
Not an issue since I never put case one phones as they're too ugly. Does the edge feel like it's in the way to using it normally? Do you press stuff with your palm? I'm right handed but even so I find using my phone more often with my left, would be perfect since I could press the edge buttons with my fingers and not my thumb.
>>
>>45263968

I still wax nostalgic for my Nokia. It was the Volvo of cell phones. I was forced into upgrading to some flip-top piece of shit. And then the attack of the iDevices came upon me.

I'd go back to my Nokia any day.
>>
I do. As strange as it is to say, I miss the tech scene from the "early 2000s" as a whole, honestly. I only realize now it what a great hybrid it was between the analog mediums of the 20th century and the 21st century "digital revolution" that was underway at the time. Don't even get me started on the innovations in computers. Every 9 or so months, the newest CPU would circles around the last one.

While I do appreciate having this nifty all-in-one device that I can browse the internet from, listen to music/watch videos, and still make calls and send texts with that I can fit in my pocket, I want to say I miss the "relative simplicity" of things, but what I think I really mean is I have a certain nostalgia for how slightly more impractical things were (if that makes even a modicum of sense). People still printed off driving directions, listened to music on CD players, and I think even email (and instant messaging, for that matter) were a little different then.

Perhaps my "nostalgia goggles" are a little too thick, but if I could go back to 2000, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Can confirm, native Moscovite here and I have two phones, a pink nokia clamshell for work and an iPhone 6 for use in public.

The Nokia survived a ridiculous amount of abuse over the years and most of the outer paint layer has peeled off, although curiously, my iPhone shows no sign of bending.

so if we wait until Nokia can make phones again, will they make stuff as they used to -in terms of variety in design and function- or will they be "yet another smartphone brand"?

I really want to see s40 platform grow, I am not liking the idea to carry a resource-heavy phone. a stylish s40 Nokia is really attractive to me. if they made a 515 with qwerty keyboard, WiFi and a landscape oriented screen (imagine asha 210 with a metal body) it would be cool.

>>
Yes I surely do miss those times. All the variety was so exiting.

Also, smartphones are quite overrated. It's just that when the iPhone came out the average girl realized phones could do more than call or text...

Most people do nothing but social media, that even an old phone could do reliably (but not in such a comfy way ). They are wasting the potential.

Theres a lot of Things that even dumb phones can do, that most people don't and the first iPhones couldn't. .. and just things that people don't remember they could:

>install applications with a wide range of functions. (This is the supposed definition of a smartphone btw)
>full video and picture camera, with editing for both.
>full 3d gaming with graphics comparable to the DS.
>full gps navigation with maps
>instant messaging, email, blogging , and social media
>watch online videos, YouTube, porn etc.
>send mms and make video calls

I think the big break is that iPhones/other black candy bar phones swung us away from "a phone that can do a few other things" to "a little computer for consuming media, that also makes old timey phone calls".

And of course, it all rode in on a big wave of bullshit marketing.

Even if the functionality is the same, the bulk of users seem to prefer a little rectangular "digital window" with a flexible UI.

Nostalgia glasses.

The camera was good, true.

But the build quality of the phone was shit.
The metal paint on the buttons wore off, and you were left with unmarked, peeled off yellowy plastic.

The sliding mechanism grew loose, same for the sliding camera cover.

After a year of use, the software would grow fucking bloated and laggy.
And that is for a glorified feature phone.

That cost over 700€, more than very powerful (for the time) smartphones from HTC etc., that had a smartphone OS and a touchscreen.

Yes and no.
There were some devices, like the one in the OP, that were really nice and I wish were still around today.

But at the same time, I like progression. I want us to move forward.
If you dig around and look at some of the things starting to emerge with android phones and what people and companies are doing with them, you'll see that we didn't stop doing cool things with phones, we simply moved to a new era of phones, and we are simply re-starting the process; giving companies time to get the normal, standard shit out of the way before they start coming up with ideas and technology to do more weird shit.

The process has been slow to start, because before now we didn't really have a need for things like flexible capacitive touch screens, but now that the need is there, the technology is starting to show itself.

Give it time, OP. Stop looking at the past and start looking at where the future could go. That is how we grow.

I always wanted that phone until I knew how low quality it was, IMO Sony and Motorola made LOWEST quality phones in the cheap range. Nokia always made good quality phones despite price... except for 5200 and 5300 those can kiss my ass

Sony made great phones, but only in the high-end/some mid-end.
Its low end was dogshit.

Why do people think these or hologram cellphones will ever become a thing?

The space behind your phone is 99% of the time either the floor or a desk. And both transparent and hologram tech are the same as literally broadcasting your homescreen to everyone around you, which is something that nobody will ever want to have on more than 5% of the time

It will never be a thing

This is the first phone I ever stole.
I also bought at least $100 worth of games from the store on it and called Australia a few times.

Dropped mine in the toilet at some nasty strip club. It worked out but the screen was blurry after that incident. I remember reading the Australian carriers had video calling wit it. Pissed me off muh freedoms wouldn't allow it.

>video calling
It was fucking awful. It was super expensive, the video quality was terrible and you both had to have one of the 2 or 3 devices that supported it. You had to be in a good coverage area or it just wouldn't work at all. Don't even get me started on how much more often the video calls were dropped, even in good coverage areas.

There's a reason that feature didn't make it state side.
